YMDDIRIEDOLAETH GERDDI HANESYDDOL CYMRU WELSH HISTORIC GARDENS TRUST South and Mid Glamorgan Branch

Annual General Meeting Sunday 22nd April 2018, from 2.00 – 4.30 at Castle, Fonmon, Barry, CF62 3ZN (Directions overleaf) All members are invited. Please come and support your Committee. We would welcome new members to the Committee. If you wish to nominate a member, with their permission, to help with events and planning applications, please let me know.

We are very grateful to Sir Brooke Boothby for making Fonmon Castle available as the venue for our Branch AGM this year. The formal business meeting will be held in the castle at 2.00 pm. After the AGM you are invited to partake of afternoon tea and members will be able to explore Fonmon’s extensive walled, terraced and informal gardens. The medieval castle of Fonmon was remodelled into an elegant residence in the C18th. The building has been continuously occupied since the C13th and by the same family since the C17th. The Grade 2 Listed gardens include a walled kitchen garden, a scented garden (new), a fuchsia border (recently restored) and lawned areas providing settings for architectural features such as the Watch Tower. Mature trees, notably oaks, beech, an Atlantic blue cedar, and a plane are important features in the Fonmon garden landscape.

The charge for the afternoon tea is £15 per person. This is to include: cheese straws, a selection of sandwiches, cakes, scones with jam and cream and tea/coffee. Visitors are welcome

This Grade 2 Listed Country Park in Lisvane on the northern edge of Cardiff contains a large collection of specimen trees (notably conifers), rare plants and flowers and abundant wildlife. The park is at it spectacular best in spring when the Dell in the valley is ablaze with rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom, and our visit has been planned to coincide with this glorious sight. In 1911 Ernest Prosser, general manager of the Taff

Vale, Cardiff and Rhymney Railway Companies laid out a woodland garden on land then known as The Dingle to Undated postcard of the pool beingused for bathing provide a haven for his son who was suffering from when the estate was owned by the Prosser family. tuberculosis. Plans to build a house on the site were abandoned when his son died, but Prosser continued to maintain the estate until his own death in 1938. His head gardener Tom Jenkins, and William Nelmes, Director of Cardiff Parks, played important roles in persuading Cardiff Council to buy the estate which was subsequently named Parc Cefn Onn. Subsequently the Council added more land to the south of the original Dingle and today the entire site extends to over 30 acres.

The walk will be led by the Committee, using information supplied by Rosie James, Principal Landscape Officer at Cardiff County Council, who will be talking to the Branch about Parc Cefn Onn in the autumn.
