Moore iii THESIS ABSTRACT John D. Moore Master of Arts Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures September 2017 Title: Inside the Boy Inside the Robot: Mobile Suit Gundam and Interiority Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) is an iconic series in the genre of television anime featuring giant fighting robots, embedded in a system of conventions developed across decades of media aimed at boys that emphasizes action and combat. In this thesis, I argue that Gundam foregrounds the interiority of its main character Amuro, challenging conventions governing the boy protagonist. Using Peter Verstraten's principles of film narratology and Thomas Lamarre’s theory of limited animation, I find in Gundam's narrative strategies sophisticated techniques developed to portray his inner life.

  • Gundam: Universal Century
Gundam: Universal Century Well, here you are at the longest-running universe in the Gundam franchise. What a horrid place to live indeed- space Nazis, colony drops, human experimentation, treaty disputes, a return to the guillotine and more all await you here. This runs from 0079 (the events of Mobile Suit Gundam) all the way to 0153 (the events of Victory Gundam) roughly give or take a year or two. You think war never changes, Jumper? War changes all the time- it’s the men that fight the wars that never change. Anyways, enough faux-philosophical drabble- +1000 CP -you’re a Jumper; you know what to do here. Good luck. Part I- Time Period Of course, being the longest fiction universe written in Gundam there’s a lot of works here to choose from. Roll a d8, or pay 50 CP to pick your poison. Any of the series mentioned on the number may be chosen. 1- Mobile Suit Gundam (Includes MS-IGLOO): The original series, following the actions of Amuro Ray- Newtype, MS builder and ‘White Devil’. The original one anyways, before a certain girl stole his title. His enemy is the Federation of Zeon, most especially its masked ace The Crimson Comet- Char Aznable. Their rivalry shall shape the UC in the coming years. This period also includes MS-IGLOO, which focuses on the actions people tried to take during important events of the One Year War. The series is mostly Zeon-focused, and features many of its pilots and prototype MS. (Earth Federation, Zeon) 2- Gundam Interquel Stories (08th MS Team, War in the Pocket, Stardust Memories): In-between the major installments of Gundam and Zeta, the events of these 3 series happened.

  • International Era
INTERNATIONAL ERA Welcome to the world of Super Robot Wars! Some time ago, people decided to make a game series about a whole bunch of mech series that people know and love crossing over, with things like Mazinger Z fighting the Zaku’s of Zeon; and people loved it! Now, it’s one of the most popular game series ever made. This jump shall focus on the International Era of games. Origins: Drop-in: You literally just turn up at around the first stage of the plot, and are quickly accepted into the main group of heroes. Super Pilot: You stumbled across your machine one day, or perhaps it was given to you by a greater force. Either way, you focus more on power than speed. Real Pilot: You were trained for your life to pilot machines. You are part of either a military or a mercenary company, and have had training with modern weaponry. Ship Captain: You are in charge of a powerful battleship, for whatever reason, whether the ship is privately owned or from a military force. You will be commanding the brave souls fighting alongside you, as well as providing transport for them all. So What’s Happening Here? That, my friend, is a very good question! The answer is that so far, the international era has featured three seperate games, and you get to choose one to drop into the start of. I'll give you a brief summary of the overall plots of each game, the main plot being, of course, driven by the series in the game, which I go over in the notes section.

  • The Gundams Are Used As Instruments of a Quadrennial
YAMATO also failed to appeal to a wider audience upon first showing, but saw a vast increase in popularity after the airing of reruns and major motion pictures. Its extremely realistic depictions of a future world probably appeared dull in comparison to colorful Super Robot series. One might say that no one watches science fiction to be reminded of the real world’s drudgery—except when it reveals things about ourselves that might seem trite or obvious when set in the ordinary world. This is where shows like YAMATO and GUNDAM step in. The tradition of every Gundam series is to examine both the individual and political ramifications of military combat. This requires an expanded world view, complete with multiple opponents, various vantage points, and a reluctance to deem any one character or organization the force of “absolute” evil. “Back in 1979, a typical giant robot anime did not require too many details in its worldbuilding,” writes anime critic Ryusuke Hikawa in A Matured Gundam Saga. “It was quite sufficient to have military bases and civilian areas for each side that turned into battlefields. In contrast, First Gundam submitted that people necessarily belonged to abstract immensities, to society and the world, and that macroscopic entities called states perpetrated the calamity of war, within which clashes between robots occurred as a conflict of arms.” This brings us to another major theme of GUNDAM: the cost of battle. In every series, collateral damage wrings pathos out of soldiers, causes politicians to change their tactics, and in some cases, directly affects the direction of the plot.

The February meeting will be a build session with a business meeting, Show-and-Tell, and a raffle. This one-off, what-if, 1:24 scale ’93 Corvette (Revell) was built by Richard Price, who usually dazzles with his ship models. According to Richard, Roy Medina challenged him to build a car model while they were judging together at Patcon 17 last September. In order to sweeten the challenge, Richard decided to paint the model (inside and out) in the Naval Measure 31a-8B camouflage colors used on the USS Texas as it appeared in November 1944. Richard also designed, and had professionally printed, decals for the speculative centennial markings on the bonnet (Richard hails from the UK). The Texas license plate reads ‘BB35,’ the Mighty T’s registration number. • Copyright Infringement As User Innovation: an Economic Analysis of D¯Ojinshi
Copyright Infringement as User Innovation: An Economic Analysis of D¯ojinshi Yasuhiro Arai∗ Shinya Kinukaway June 23, 2010 Abstract We examine the relationship between the copyright holder of the original work and its derivative creator based on a simple economic model that incorporates both positive and negative externalities of the derivative work. It is shown that letting the derivative creator freely use the original work can be optimal for the copyright holder. Fur- thermore, when the free use of the original is optimal for the copyright holder, it is also optimal for social welfare, though the opposite is not necessarily true. ∗National Institute for Research Advancement yKomazawa University 1 Introduction Major Japanese anime studios and manga publishers have been ignoring massive copyright infringement by d¯ojinshi, which usually refer to Japanese manga written by amateurs.1 Many of d¯ojinshi are derivative works using characters of famous commercial anime or manga works. In most case, however, they are created and sold without official permissions from the copyright holders of the original works. Thus, it is highly possible that the activity of d¯ojinshi creators violates the article 28 of Copyright Law of Japan, which states the right of the original author in the exploitation of a derivative work.2 Although Japanese copyright law lacks a generalized fair use provision, some limited use of copyrighted material without a license is permissible. For example, the article 30 states the \private use" of copyrighted material, which refer
