The annotation is an objective description of materials and often includes suggestions concerning appropriate grade-level and utilization of materials. The bibliographic materials are generally adapted for use by bilingual teachers. Many familiar works included in the compilation have been translated from foreign languages into Spanish.     Miami, Florida October 07,2010 Applied Research Center FlU Latin American and Caribbean Center Florida International University Applied Research FlU Center FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Florida International University's Applied Research Center (FlU ARC), in collaboration with the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and FlU's Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), has recently fonned the FIU-SOUTHCOM Academic Partnership. The partnership entails FlU providing the highest quality research-based knowledge to further explicative understanding of the political, strategic, and cultural dimensions of state behavior and .. foreign policy. This goal will be accomplished by employing a strategic culture approach. The initial phase of strategic culture assessments consisted of a year-long research program that focused on developing a standard analytical framework to identify and assess the strategic culture of ten Latin American countries. FlU facilitated professional presentations of the following ten countries over the course of one year: Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. In addition, a findings report on the impact of Islam and Muslims within Latin America has been produced. The partnership has been expanded to include six additional strategic culture country studies, that is: Guatemala, Peru, Dominican Republic, EI Salvador, Paraguay, and Honduras. The overarching purpose of the project is two-fold: to generate a rich and dynamic base of knowledge pertaining to the political, social, and strategic factors that influence state behavior; and to contribute to SOUTHCOM's Socio-Cultural Dynamics (SCD) Program. Utilizing the notion of strategic culture, SOUTHCOM has commissioned FlU ARC to conduct country studies in order to explain how states comprehend, interpret, and implement national security policy vis­ a-vis the international system.

Clinton Democratic ticket in the 2016 presidential election. According to the New York Times, Mr. Kaine was a "sophomore at Rockhurst High School, Jesuit academy in Kansa City, Mo." in 1974 when he first visited Honduras (Horowitz). The second time he visits is as a 22-year-old volunteer in El Progreso, Honduras. The country is mentioned in the newspaper because the now and still Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia spent time in what is described in The New York Times, as an impoverished nation that was surrounded by war, communist and Marxist ideas in the 1970's and 1980's. But much has happened since the "bearded and mop-haired Midwesterner" Tim Kaine visited Honduras. For one, more than thirty-five years have passed and Honduras has changed since a twenty-something "kid" from the Midwest volunteer was in El Progreso. Second, the profile for Tim Kaine has changed from a "'sheltered kid'" to the national spotlight in the United States.

    THE MICRO-STORIES OF NERY ALEXIS GAITÁN: A HONDURAN AUTHOR IN MODERN LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE by LAURA DEE SHEDENHELM (Under the Direction of José B. Álvarez IV) ABSTRACT The literature of Honduras has received little critical attention in comparison to other Latin America literatures. This study has several parts. First, I review how Central American literature in general and Honduran literature in particular has been presented in selected reference books published since 1990. Next, I present the literary generations of Honduran authors and place them in context to other Latin American writers. Third, I review the development of the micro-story as a subgenre of Latin American narrative. Lastly, I analyze Nery Alexis Gaitán’s writing. As a member of the most recent generation of Honduran authors, Gaitán is known for his micro-stories. Therefore, after a brief bio-bibliography of the author, I analyze the micro-stories in his collection La vida menor (1990), looking for the linguistic precision and unexpected endings which are hallmarks of this format.
