In the north western corner of Slovenia, close to Austria and Italy, are the limestone mountains known as the Julian Alps. The range was the stage of bitter fighting during WWI (with relics on the trails to prove it) and Hemingway wrote his book, 'Farewell to Arms', while based in these mountains. More recently they have become famous for the exciting trekking opportunities in what is some of the finest mountain scenery in Europe. Characterised by high mountain lakes, peaceful alpine valleys and rugged limestone peaks, the Julian Alps retain their distinctive identity and originality. The walk ascends thematic paths and passes by beautiful turquoise lakes to complete a memorable journey The tour is suitable for fit walkers. It requires some basic experience of walking at high mountain levels and narrow paths. Not suitable for children. This is an exhilarating adventure that will appeal to alpine enthusiasts. Night in a 4* Hotel. Day 2: Bled to Pokljuka high plateau – 11km, 620m/6 hours A short morning car transfer brings you to the staring point, on top of Pokljuka high plateau (1280 m) – starting point of many hiking trails in Julian Alps. The warming-up hike will lead you over mountain pastures and through dense fir forests to up to Lipanska Hut. A typical hikers' lunch can be taken there. The afternoon walk will bring you along a panoramic route (excellent views of Karawanke range, Pokljuka plateau, Krma valley and Bohinj Mountains) to biathlon centre of Pokljuka where you stay for the night. Day 3: Pokljuka high plateau to Planika – 105km,1100m/7 hours After breakfast, off it goes to the heart of Triglav National Park and Julian Alps. The trail slowly ascends to Vodnikov Dom hut, where lunch and rest can be taken. Daily destination is Planika, right underneath Mt. Triglav – highest Slovene mountain (2864 m). Planika is an ideal starting point for a climb to Mt. Triglav, however, additional nights need to be booked there to accomplish this extra climb (the climb is partly a “via ferrata”, some alpine experience and a helmet is recommended). Today your main luggage gets collected at Pokljuka hotel and is safely stored in Bled until you reach Bohinj at the end of the walk. You will not have access to it until then so make sure you have everything you need in your backpack. Overnight in a mountain hut. On your way you can stop and admire the beauty of one the Triglav Park’s seven lakes, Zeleno Jezero (Green Lake), whose name is derived from the high algae content painting the lake a gorgeous lush green. As you continue on you will enjoy the beautiful view into the rest of the Dolina Triglavskih Jezer (The Valley of the Triglav Lakes). From the Koča pri Triglavski Jezerih hut it’s about a 3-hour hike to the Koča pri Savici where you will spend the night. Day 5: Koca Pri Triglavskih Jezerih to Savica Waterfall – 10km,1000m/5.5 hours A long descend into the valley awaits you. During lunch break at Komna hut you will also enjoy great view of Bohinj Lake. The day will end with a short 20-minute walk to Savica Waterfall, which is one of the most famous and popular waterfalls in Slovenia. An alpine Karst spring flows to the top of the waterfall and then cascades 78 metres and subsequently feeds the mighty Lake Bohinj. (Your main luggage will await you here.) You spend the night in a mountain hut accommodation or you can go for the upgrade in a 3* hotel. Day 6: Savica Waterfall to Bohinj Valley – 13km, 100m/4 hours After breakfast, a relaxing walk along the northern shore of Bohinj Lake will bring you to Ribcev Laz village where you can warm your blood with delicious home-made honey brandy and schnapps in the local bars. In summer months you can enjoy a swim in crystal clear water of Bohinj Lake. Alternatively, you can ascend Mt. Vogel with a cabin cable car. From top (1532 m) you'll be able to enjoy a perfect panoramic view of Julian Alps and areas you walked previous days.Night in 4* hotel. Day 7: Bohinj Valley to Lake Bled – little walk in the area/around 5km After breakfast you will be transferred to Lake Bled, a place that attracts visitors with its combination of natural wonders and unique culture and history. The surrounding region offers plenty of excellent hiking opportunities, including a walk to the stunning Vintgar Gorge. There is a 1600-metre long walk on a wooden walkway, which leads through the scenic gorge along the Radovna River to the Sum Waterfall. Heading east, following well-marked signs for Bled, you have about 1 km to the Church of St. Catherine. From here it’s about 4 kms back to Bled Lake. If you prefer a nice leisurely stroll on your final day, a hike around the lake takes about 1 hour. You can reach the famous island church on the lake by a special boat called “Pletna”, or visit Bled Castle and its museum inside. The museum hosts an interesting exhibition on the history of the castle. Your final night will be spent in a nice hotel overlooking the lake. Overnight in 4* hotel in Bled. Day 8: End of the trip The tour ends with a hearty breakfast, after which you are free to do as you please. • Exploring Slovenia's Julian Alps and Beyond
Exploring Slovenia’s Julian Alps and Beyond Two Treks and Balkan Culture in an Undiscovered Corner of the Alps August 30, 2021 – September 13, 2021 – Trip #2167 Triglav National Park Overview Join us for a wonderful fifteen-day trip to the undiscovered hiking and scenic paradise of Slovenia. We will pass medieval castles, churches, and traditional mountain villages as we walk through valleys, across mountain pastures, and traverse mountain ridges with towering peaks all around us. This trip combines two rugged short treks (one carrying all our gear and staying in mountain huts, and the other staying in hotels with luggage transport), an exciting ascent to Slovenia’s highest peak, and visits to the most scenic and interesting regions of this small, but incredibly beautiful country. A few words about Slovenia itself: it is a small country located in southern central Europe at the intersection of major trade routes and of the Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages and cultures. Historically part of many empires including Rome, Austro-Hungarian, Venice, and France, it is currently a prosperous, democratic European country of two million persons. Over 50% of its landmass remains forested. It is exceptionally bio-diverse for its size particularly as pertains to endemic cave species. Slovenia’s Place in Europe Trip Difficulty This trip is rated strenuous #6. Trip Rating System. Excluding breaks we will hike from five to seven hours per day, between 6 and 14 miles, with an average elevation gain of about 2500 feet. The terrain is rugged and steep in places, and requires agility. There will be sections on narrow trails with exposure (steep drop-offs).

Marjan Malešič PODNEBNE SPREMEMBE IN NACIONALNA VARNOST Diplomsko delo Ljubljana 2007 Podnebne spremembe in nacionalna varnost Podnebne spremembe predstavljajo vse bolj resno grožnjo svetu. S tem, kako bo v prihodnosti, se ukvarjajo mnoge študije, vendar pa so dejanske napovedi nemogoče. Podnebne spremembe so vse bolj pogosto povezane z nacionalno varnostjo držav. Diplomsko delo v prvem delu obravnava podnebne spremembe skozi zgodovino in okoljske probleme v svetu in Sloveniji. Climate change and national security The threat to the world stability posed by climate change is becoming increasingly more severe. Numerous studies have come up with possible future scenarios.

  • JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK 2The Julian Alps
1 JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK www.slovenia.info 2The Julian Alps The Julian Alps are the southeast- ernmost part of the Alpine arc and at the same time the mountain range that marks the border between Slo- venia and Italy. They are usually divided into the East- ern and Western Julian Alps. The East- ern Julian Alps, which make up approx- imately three-quarters of the range and cover an area of 1,542 km2, lie entirely on the Slovenian side of the border and are the largest and highest Alpine range in Slovenia. The highest peak is Triglav (2,864 metres), but there are more than 150 other peaks over 2,000 metres high. The emerald river Soča rises on one side of the Julian Alps, in the Primorska re- gion; the two headwaters of the river Sava – the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka – rise on the other side, in the Gorenjska region. The Julian Alps – the kingdom of Zlatorog According to an ancient legend a white chamois with golden horns lived in the mountains. The people of the area named him Zlatorog, or “Goldhorn”. He guarded the treasures of nature. One day a greedy hunter set off into the mountains and, ignoring the warnings, tracked down Zlatorog and shot him. Blood ran from his wounds Chamois The Triglav rose and fell to the ground. Where it landed, a miraculous plant, the Triglav rose, sprang up. Zlatorog ate the flowers of this plant and its magical healing powers made him invulnerable. At the same time, however, he was saddened by the greed of human beings.
