Formed in 1986 by high school buddies Ken Andrews (Obituary) and Matt Riley, AZRAEL released a pair of demos early during their run (1987’s Azrael and 1988’s Welcome), but it wasn’t until Brian Christopher, Steve Zentner and Bob Koeble (Death) joined in 1989 and 1990, respectively, that things really began to gel for the group. The new lineup began demoing material while honing their live chops opening for such acts as Death Angel, Reverend, Exodus, and Vicious Rumors. Recording most of the songs that would eventually become Television Slave in 1990, AZRAEL originally opted to use the material exclusively for promotional purposes, sending the cassettes to record labels. As time passed, and with no label interest in sight, they decided to go back and tweak out the recordings for a proper cassette release in 1992. The group sold all 1,000 copies of Television Slave they had pressed, which is remarkable because by that time, the music industry was definitely shifting away from heavy metal. AZRAEL noticed this change, leading to their decision to disband soon after. The limited edition CD release contains not only the original 7 tracks contained on the Television Slave cassette (newly mastered from original digital sources), but also several additional recordings made during that period that have never been released. Also, as a bonus, we have included their 1988 cassette release, Welcome. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. O objetivo é identificar e analisar a apropriação dos elementos constantes na obra e reinterpretados pela banda Sepultura em seu registro sonoro Dante XXI. Produtos culturais de tempos e sociedades distintas, com características próprias de suas épocas, buscamos compreender semelhanças e diferenças que apresentam, veiculadas, é claro, aos seus respectivos contextos de produção. A análise se dará dentro da seguinte perspectiva: como Dante percebia o tema aqui escolhido em sua época e como a banda Sepultura reinterpreta e atualiza em seu registro sonoro esta visão para os dias atuais. Palavras-chave: Dante. Heavy Metal. Política. Abstract This study has as subject the medieval work Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri. The objective is to identify and to analyze the appropriation of the elements constant in the medieval work and reinterpreted by the band Sepultura in its cd Dante XXI. Cultural products of times and distinct societies, with proper characteristics of its times, we search to understand similarities and differences that present, propagated, clearly, to its respective contexts of production. This analysis will be inside of the following perspective: how Dante perceived them at his time and how the band Sepultura reinterprets them and updates it in its sound recording with a vision of the current days.

    éééééeDITO Dans de nombreux fanzines, il m’est arrivé de lire en début d’édito : « 1 an que je suis dessus à en chier… du coup les chroniques et interviews ne sont pas, fraîchement parlant, d’une actualité à toute épreuve… » etc. A défaut d’être original, ça fait bien 1 an que l’on a eu cette idée de créer un ’zine ! Yo. L’idée était de pondre un fanzine gratuit à 1000 exemplaires, consacré à la BD et à la scène punk, alternative, DIY… (comme tu veux tu dis). Il a donc fallu trouver un « financement » pour payer la gratuité, en refusant évidemment toutes formes de subventions ou autres sys- tèmes pourvus d’originalité, par respect des lecteurs et de nous-mêmes. Sans vouloir tomber dans le confort nihiliste, il existe suffisamment de modalités / morales / fonctionnements ou autres pressions quotidiennes sans réelles alternatives, ce qui n’est pas le cas en ce qui concerne la contre-culture* (*terme qu’il va falloir penser à rejeter, mais je n’en ai pas d’autre sous la main). Nous décidons alors d’organiser un concert de soutien le 9 décembre 2005, et proposons à 2 groupes du coin (Shedding Skin et Fuck Off Für And The Putrid Sound) qui acceptent d’y participer. L’info ayant circulé, 2 autres groupes attirés par le rougeâtre de table johan- nique… (Décombres et James Brown’s Hide Show), de Paris cette fois, se proposent. L’affiche est bookée et nous sommes contents de réunir ces groupes pour boire ce putain de rougeâtre ensemble.
