    JEMEAA - FEATURE The Use of Helicopters against Guerrillas The Israeli Model DR. TAL TOVY ince its establishment, the State of Israel has been facing a bloody struggle against terrorism and guerrilla warfare, in addition to four conventional wars.1 The Israeli war against guerrilla fighters or terrorists began almost Simmediately after the War of Independence. Palestinian terrorists attempted to infiltrate Israel from the surrounding Arab countries and perform sabotage ac- tions near the border, which were little more than lines drawn on a map and proved wholly inadequate in stopping the infiltrations. After the 1967 war, most terrorists crossed over from Jordan. Following the “Black September” conflict in 1970 and up until 1982 (Operation Peace for Galilee), most terrorists infiltrated through the Lebanese border. In the 1980s and 1990s, Israel fought against the Shiite Amal Movement and Hezbollah organization in Lebanon. Since October 2000, Israel has struggled against widespread military uprisings in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. To counter these activities, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) uses various opera- tional methods. Special Forces have raided known terrorist bases and routine se- curity activities have been conducted along the borders and in the major cities. A third method has been targeting specific terrorist leaders or installations in the Middle East and in Europe. Most operations of the first and third categories are still classified. The IDF has launched a few large attacks targeting terrorist infra- structure—for example Karameh and Litany—with the most extensive one being the Lebanon War (1982), at least initially. In these large-scale operations, Israel has deployed massive infantry, armor, and artillery forces.

    Ten-year-old Moshiko was saved by an organ transplant made possible by the Halachic Organ Donor Society Saving Lives n 1995, 20-year-old American Alisa Flatow died of her injuries following a terrorist Iattack in Israel. After consulting with Rabbi Moshe Tendler, a renowned Orthodox rabbi and an expert in biomedical ethics, her parents made the emotionally difficult but courageous decision to donate her organs for transplantation saving many lives. Alisa Flatow This highly publicized case was followed by organ donations from other Orthodox Jews, including J.J. Greenberg, Yoni Jesner and Tani Goodman. Nonetheless, a widespread misconception persists among Jews of all denominations, including secular Jews, that traditional Jewish law (i.e. Halacha) J.J. Greenberg categorically prohibits organ donation. As a result of this misunderstanding, Jews have one of the lowest organ donation rates of any ethnic group. Only 8 percent of Israel’s population are registered organ donors, as compared to 35 percent of the population in most Western countries.     June 2017 /Sivan 5777 Common Questions Frum Patients Should Ask of Doctors Dear Reader: There are many situations in many areas of life in which halakha and medicine intersect, but this is especially so in the area of Taharat Hamishpakha, or family purity. In this issue, we will focus on some of the most common questions women ask a yoetzet halakha, for which she advises them to reach out to their doctors. Q: I recently started a new pill. I had one typical cycle, and then, when I came home from the mikvah, I started staining. What should I do? Is this normal? My doctor did say I might have some staining, but I have never stained before and am concerned. Should I call my doctor? A: Whenever a woman has a doubt about whether or not she should call her doctor, I would always advise her to call her doctor. Being in touch with the physician who knows the woman's medical history can be helpful; additionally, the doctor can track her concerns. If she calls again with the same concern, the doctor can remind her that she had spoken about it before and be particularly understanding that this is something she is very worried about. In this particular case, it would be important to note the following factors: Where was the staining, how much did she see, and where she is in her cycle when she saw it? If she is taking the active pills and she is wearing colored underwear, assuming she did not have an actual flow, she would not be in niddah.

À l’arrière-plan de ce débat figurait la règle talmudique selon laquelle le fondement du mariage ré- side dans le don que fait le fiancé d’un bien à sa future épouse. Les aspects légaux de cette question n’expliquent toutefois qu’en partie la durée et l’âpreté de ce débat. La pérennité de cette coutume, parmi les juifs italiens, en dépit des résistances non moins durables des juifs venus d’ailleurs, est liée à la fonction des présents dans les rituels locaux du mariage. L’étude des écrits consacrés à cette question — ouvrages classiques ou actuels d’inspiration anthropologique — confirment le lien étroit de cette pratique avec les divers aspects de la culture locale: conceptions relatives à la richesse et à la propriété, à l’honneur et à l’identité; contrôle communautaire sur les rituels du mariage et sur l’ensemble de la vie familiale.
