Know your units Community Pharmacy Living Well Alcohol alternative recipes Campaign There are lots of alternatives to regular strength alcoholic drinks, including a wide range of low alcohol and alcohol-free beers, lagers, wines and ciders. There are also many ways to use fruit juice, sparkling sodas and mineral water to create appealing alternatives to alcohol. Why not try out some of the Living Well ‘Mocktail’ recipes or create your own alcohol-free alternative drinks? Preparation To frost the rims of glasses, dip the rim in water and then into a saucer of caster sugar. Leave upright to dry. Ice cubes can be coloured or flavoured to blend with the drink or they can be made with small pieces of fruit or mint leaves set in them. Crushed ice is easily made by placing ice cubes in a clean tea towel and crushing with a rolling pin. If drinks need mixed, a clean screw-top jar makes a good alternative to a cocktail shaker. Mojito Mocktail Serves 2 Ingredients 1 tablespoon of sugar (or low calorie sweetener) Juice of 3 limes Soda water Small bunch of mint Crushed ice Method Crush the sugar with the mint leaves using a pestle and mortar (or use a small bowl and end of rolling pin). Put a handful of crushed ice into 2 tall glasses. Divide the lime juice between the glasses with the mint mix. Top up with soda water, add some extra mint leaves to decorate and enjoy! Strain into a cocktail glass. Decorate with a maraschino cherry on a cocktail stick. Apple Crisp Serves 1 Ingredients 5 parts sparkling apple juice 3 parts soda water Crushed ice Method Mix the sparkling apple juice and soda water in a separate glass. Fill a stemmed glass with crushed ice and serve. For more information visit drugsandalcoholni.info Know your units Community Pharmacy Living Well Alcohol alternative recipes Campaign Red Cracker Serves 1 Ingredients 250ml tomato juice 30ml lemon juice 1 dash tabasco sauce 1 dash Worcestershire sauce Salt and pepper Celery salt (optional) Celery (to decorate) Ice cubes Method Frost the rim of a large glass by dipping it in water then into a saucer of celery salt (this step is optional). Leave upright to dry. Shake all the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker or screw-top jar. Place the ice cubes in your frosted glass. Pour over ice, decorate with a stick of celery and serve. To ensure your alcohol alternatives are as healthy as possible, remember these healthy hints: • Use low calorie or sugar free lemonades, ginger ale and soft drinks. • Use tinned fruit in natural juice or fruit juice rather than in syrup. • Fruit juice should be unsweetened. • If your drink includes yogurt choose low fat and preferably the unsweetened variety. • Use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk if needed. • Fresh fruit and fruit based drinks will provide valuable amounts of Vitamin C.
