Unfortunately, the current political conditions that has also led to the suspension of disbursement on March 11, 2015, has put most activities on hold. The situation is also delaying the declaration of effectiveness of the Additional financing even though it was already signed by both the Bank and the Government of Yemen. Meanwhile, students of the first batch of six four-year programs (Biochemical Program – Thamar University, Computer Science Program- Hajjah University, Applied Physics Program- Ibb University, and Business Administration Program – AlHodidah University, Basic Education Program – Sana’a University, and Marine Biology Program- Hadramout University) are expected to graduate during 2016. In addition, the construction of the Mechatronics program building in Sanaa University was successfully completed (with delays) with the support of a Yemeni businessman. Yemen SHEILA CARAPICO IN FEBRUARY 2011, Tawakkol Karman stood on a stage outside Sanaa University. A microphone in one hand and the other clenched defiantly above her head, reading from a list of demands, she led tens of thou­ sands of cheering, flag-waving demonstrators in calls for peaceful politi­ cal change. She was to become not so much the leader as the figurehead ofYemen's uprising. On other days and in other cities, other citizens led the chants: men and women and sometimes, for effect, little children. These mass public performances enacted a veritable civic revolution in a poverty-stricken country where previous activist surges never produced democratic transitions but nonetheless did shape national history. Drawing on the Tunisiari and Egyptian inspirations as well as homegrown protest legacies, in 2011 Yemenis occupied the national commons as never before.

    Arab Media & Society (Issue 29, Winter/Spring 2020) Journalism and Media Education in Times of Conflict: Three Cases from the Arab Region Rasha Allam & Salma El Ghetany Introduction Scholars and social studies researchers have always been intrigued by how war is covered and packaged to be presented to the world. Audiences often switch between different outlets in search for the voice that supports their side, as well as understand what the „other‟ is saying. The question of objectivity becomes key, and issues of bias and ethical coverage remain central (Galtung 2003). Most studies in mass communication focus on media performance during times of war or conflict, yet rarely pay attention to journalism and media education during these times (Ziani, Elareshi, Alrashid & Al-Jaber 2018). This paper surveys the importance of examining media education programs by analyzing the impact of journalism and media programs in three Arab states that have been or are still in the throes of civil wars and/or polarization along conflicting political ideologies and control of different geographical zones in each country, and how journalism and media education is affected partially and/or entirely by these divisions. Journalism Education in the Arab World Journalism in the Arab region has origins in ancient Egyptian and Arab manuscripts. The evolution of journalism in the past three decades has transformed how some Arab countries view and deal with news and journalism. Arab journalists have, over the years, learned their practice and skills on the ground upon completing secondary school education. It was with recent technological advancements that more structured university education for aspiring Arab journalists emerged.

    Alternative Politics, Vol.3, No.3, 256-419, November 2011 256 TIMELINE OF THE ARAB REVOLT: DECEMBER 2010 – JUNE 2011 Bogdan SZAJKOWSKI* December 17, 2010 Tunisia - Mohamed Bouazizi, a 26-year-old unemployed, sets fire to himself in the central Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid, protesting at the confiscation by police of his fruit and vegetable cart. He suffers third-degree burns across his entire body and is subsequently treated in the Traumatology Centre for Severe Burns in the town of Ben Arous. His self-immolation sparks demonstrations in which protesters burned tyres and chanted slogans demanding jobs. Protests soon spread to other parts of the country including the towns of al-Ragab and Maknasi in central Tunisia, and later the capital, Tunis. Videos of the Sidi Bouzid demonstrations are online soon after the protest began and the Twitter website carries extensive commentary of the protests. December 19, 2010 Tunisia - Protests spread to Kairouan (holy city located in north-central Tunisia), Sfax (city 270 km southeast of Tunis), and Ben Guerdane (town in south-eastern Tunisia, close to the border with Libya). December 20, 2010 Tunisia - Mohamed Al Nouri Al Juwayni, the Tunisian development minister, travels to Sidi Bouzid to announce a new $10m employment programme. But protests continue unabated. December 21, 2010 Tunisia - President Ben Ali carries out limited cabinet reshuffle and warns that protesters would be punished if rioting continued in the country. December 22, 2010 Tunisia - Lahseen Naji, a 22-year-old commits suicide in the midst of another demonstration over unemployment in Sidi Bouzid by climbing an electricity pylon and electrocuting himself on the cables, after shouting out ―No to misery, no to unemployment!‖ 257 Bogdan Szajkowski Ramzi Al-Abboudi, under the burden of business debt, ironically made possible by the country‘s micro-credit solidarity programme, commits suicide.

ABSTRACT The aim of the research is to uncover the motives of Taiz university students using WhatsApp, and the achieved gratifications from using it. This descriptive survey method was used to achieve the research objectives, and the research sample was chosen from students of Taiz Governmental University,. and the two private universities; Al-Hikma and Alatta Universities. 180 students were randomly selected from the Faculties of Science and Probability. The most important results are that the degree of ritual motives for using WhatsApp is high, foremost among which is study, non-study studies, and spending leisure time, while utilitarian motives have a medium degree, on top of which is the cognitive motivation and communication with colleagues, where it was found that the degree of satisfaction resulting from the use of WhatsApp is medium. Satisfying gratification with escaping from reality, and creating a good and weak learning environment, as it became clear that the negative impact of using WhatsApp has a weak role, and the results showed that there is no statistical study between the averages and responses were achieved in the two areas of motivation use according to the gender variable (male, female), and there are statistically significant differences for alternatives positive effects.
