THE PALGRAVE MACMILLAN ANIMAL ETHICS SERIES Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics Kenneth R. Valpey The Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Series Series Editors Andrew Linzey Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics Oxford, UK Priscilla N. Cohn Pennsylvania State University Villanova, PA, USA Associate Editor Clair Linzey Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics Oxford, UK In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the ethics of our treatment of animals. Philosophers have led the way, and now a range of other scholars have followed from historians to social scientists. From being a marginal issue, animals have become an emerging issue in ethics and in multidisciplinary inquiry. Tis series will explore the challenges that Animal Ethics poses, both conceptually and practically, to traditional understandings of human-animal relations. Specifcally, the Series will: • provide a range of key introductory and advanced texts that map out ethical positions on animals • publish pioneering work written by new, as well as accomplished, scholars; • produce texts from a variety of disciplines that are multidisciplinary in character or have multidisciplinary relevance. (2017). “My” hero or epic fail? Torchwood as transnational telefantasy. Palabra Clave, 20(3), 722-762. DOI: 10.5294/pacla.2017.20.3.7 Abstract Telefantasy series Torchwood (2006–2011, multiple production partners) was industrially and paratextually positioned as being Welsh, despite its frequent status as an international co-production. When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4.

1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. BOOK REVIEWS Abel, Kerry: Drum Songs: Glimpses of Dene History. Montreal: McGill- Queen's University Press, 1993, xxviii + 339 pp., black and white photographs, tables, maps, bibliography, index. [McGill-Queen's Stud- ies in Ethnic History series.] ISBN: 0-7735-0992-5, Cloth CDN $44.95; 0-7735-1150-4, Paper CDN $19.95. Kerry Abel grew up in northern Canadian resource towns but, not surprisingly, learned little from her schooling about the north and its Aboriginal residents. This personal experience inspired her research focus as an historian. With this book, she hopes "... to readjust the balance of historical writing" (p.x) and "... to answer the question of how these northern people have been able to maintain a sense of cultural distinctiveness in the face of overwhelming economic, political, and cultural pressures from the European newcomers to their homelands" (p.xi). While she does not claim to be writing an ethnohistory or history from Dene perspectives, she does incorporate a wide range of social, economic, and political topics. Dene or Athapaskan peoples are widely distributed across the western Subarctic, from Hudson Bay to interior Alaska. They live in northern California and in the southwestern United States. The Dene of this history are those occupying the Mackenzie River drainage, especially that part of it that later became the Northwest Territories, with some discussion of contiguous regions. A map showing the general population divisions used in this book would have been helpful. The narrative begins by outlining the history of human occupation of the Mackenzie Drainage to the point of contact with Europeans, drawing upon archaeological evidence and Dene oral traditions (Chapter 1) followed by a very broad-brushed picture of Dene life in the 18th century on the eve of contact with European traders (Chapter 2).

  • Sasquatch and the Law: the Implications of Bigfoot Preservation Laws in Washington State
Ilacqua 1 Joan Ilacqua HGSA Conference Paper Sasquatch and the Law: The Implications of Bigfoot Preservation Laws in Washington State The American Pacific Northwest is characterized and recognized by its lush wilderness, mountain ranges, salmon, Starbucks coffee, and most recently, by “Portlandia”esque hipsters. The Pacific Northwest is also the home of the elusive, and presumed bogus, Sasquatch. Although the Sasquatch has its roots in Native American lore, the word “Sasquatch” is an anglicized Salish word, the first Bigfoot story was published by pioneer missionary Elkanah Walker in 1840 and a long tradition of publishing Bigfoot stories has proliferated since. Bigfoot searches and stories culminated in the 1967 PattersonGimlin film of a supposed female Sasquatch, although the myth has found resurgence in modern Bigfoot hunting television shows. Whether or not the elusive Sasquatch exists, ultimately the stories serve as a cautionary tale to act pragmatically in the wilderness. The myth and subsequent stories have become a symbol of the Pacific Northwest region. Bigfoot fervor also resulted in two Sasquatch preservation laws: the 1969 Skamania County Ordinance no. 6901, later amended in 1984, and the 1991 Whatcom County Resolution No. 92043. Each law purports to protect a creature that, if it does exist, is obviously endangered. The laws have a secondary purpose of protecting unsuspecting wilderness seekers from Bigfoot hunters, on their own the laws seem superfluous but they fit into a larger narrative about wilderness conservation and preservation in Washington state. Skamania County is in southeastern Washington state, just south of Mount Rainier, Ilacqua 2 and includes Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount Saint Helens.

  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.
