The 918 Spyder. It’s not the easiest thing to write sports car history and, at the same time, redefine the future of the sports car. However, our engineers would not be happy with anything less. The goal was clear: a super sports car. The parameters: the most efficient drive possible combined with an extremely high output. The initial spark: a high-performance hybrid with a highly emotive V8 racing engine and two additional electric machines (motors/generators). The crucial step: the combination of three drives delivering a total output of 652 kW (887 hp) with incredible torque of up to 1,280 Nm. The car also represents the future of efficiency. Thanks to a series of measures, such as recuperation, the electric machines help to reduce fuel consumption to just 3.3–3.0 litres per 100 km when an efficient driving style is adopted. ‘E-boost’ and an additional output of 210 kW (286 hp) are also included. The map switch controls four different driving modes plus a ‘Hot Lap’ configuration to ensure optimum interaction between the electric machines and combustion engine depending on the driving scenario and style. Simply groundbreaking. Our engineers then went one step further. The 918 Spyder features an extremely lightweight construction derived from the world of motorsport. Both the load-bearing structures of the 918 Spyder, the monocoque and subframe, and its outer skin are made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP). In order to understand the direction the 918 Spyder is taking in the 21st century, it’s useful to take a look back at our racing past. Porsche has always been closely linked with motorsport. Since 1948 – and from the very first second. Back then, it was a racing version of the Porsche 356 that secured a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. One of the first of more than 30,000 victories on the track to date. The principle remains the same today: small, agile sports cars with a comparatively low cubic capacity, but a great deal of eagerness to perform. This pinprick strategy soon turned into sporting dominance. 1970 and 1971 saw the start of a new era in Le Mans with formidable overall wins by the Porsche 917. A review. 1963: The original 911 911 2,0 Coupé from 1965 As the successor to the Porsche 356, the 911 won the hearts of sports car enthusiasts from the outset. The prototype was first unveiled at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in 1963 as the 901, and was renamed the 911 for its market launch in 1964. Its air-cooled six-cylinder flat engine with two-litre displacement delivered 130 hp, giving it an impressive top speed of 210 km per hour. If you wanted to take things a little slower, you could also opt for the four-cylinder Porsche 912 from 1965. In 1966, Porsche presented the Page 1 of 6 160 hp 911 S, which was the first to feature forged alloy wheels from Fuchs. The 911 Targa, with its distinctive stainless steel roll-over bar, made its debut in late 1966 as the world’s first ever safety cabriolet. The semi-automatic Sportomatic four-speed transmission joined the line-up in 1967. And with the 911 T, and the later E and S variants, Porsche became the first German manufacturer to comply with strict US exhaust emission control regulations. The Porsche 911 became more and more powerful as displacement increased, initially to 2.2 litres (1969) and later to 2.4 (1971). The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of 1972 with a 210 hp engine and weighing less than 1000 kg remains the epitome of a dream car to this day. Its characteristic “ducktail” was the world’s first rear spoiler on a production vehicle.

    The Porsche Type List When Professor Ferdinand Porsche started his business, the company established a numeric record of projects known as the Type List. As has been reported many times in the past, the list began with Type 7 so that Wanderer-Werke AG did not realize they were the company’s first customer. Of course, as a result, Porsche’s famous car, the 356 as defined on the Type List, was actually Porsche’s 350th design project. In reviewing the Porsche Type List enclosed on this website, you might notice several interesting aspects. First, although there is a strong chronological alignment of Type numbers, it is certainly not perfect. No official explanation exists as to why this occurs. It is possible that Type numbers were originally treated only as an informal configuration and data management tool and today’s rigorous examination of Porsche history is but an aberration of 20/20 hindsight. Secondly, you might also notice that there were variations on Type List numbers that were probably made rather spontaneously. For example, consider the Type 60 with its many “K” variations to designate different body styles. Also consider how the Type 356 was initially a tube frame chassis then changed to a sheet metal chassis with the annotation 356/2 but the /2 later reused to describe different body/engine offerings. Then there were the variants on the 356 annotated as 356 SL, 356A, 356B, and 356C designations and in parallel there were the 356 T1 through 356 T7 designations. Not to mention, of course, the trademark infringement threat that caused the Type 901 to be externally re-designated as the 911.

Porsche has notched up yet another victory at the “Super Sebring” race weekend. Nick Tandy (Great Britain) and his French teammates Patrick Pilet and Frédéric Makowiecki took the flag in first place in the Porsche 911 RSR at the twelve- hour race of the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship. With this success, the trio in the No. 911 car have not only repeated their win from last year, but also rounded off an extremely successful weekend for Porsche. A day earlier, the ca. 510 hp racing car from Weissach had won both GTE classes at the 1,000-mile race of the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC. The No. 912 sister car driven by Earl Bamber (New Zealand), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) and Mathieu Jaminet (France) finished the thrilling long-distance classic in the USA on fifth place. Early on in the race, lack of grip in the heavy rain initially threw both Porsche 911 RSR down the field. As conditions improved at the half-way point of the race, the experienced Porsche GT Team utilised every last strength of the car. Thanks to great tactics, top-class driving and flawless teamwork, the No. 911 car fought its way back into the lead. In a gripping finale, Nick Tandy fended off all attacks and crossed the finish line after twelve hours with a 1.951-second lead. Tandy, Pilet and Makowiecki are the first driver trio to win the IMSA race at Sebring twice in a row.
