FACULTY LEADER BERT PATENAUDE

Bert Patenaude, MA ’79, PhD ’87, teaches history and international relations at Stanford University, where he is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. His research into the origins of the Nobel Peace Prize and the rise of the international peace movement at the start of the 20th century inspired a chapter in his book A Wealth of Ideas: Revelations from the Hoover Institution Archives (Stanford University Press, 2006). His first book, The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (Stanford University Press, 2002), won the 2003 Marshall D. Shulman Book Prize and was made into a documentary film that was broadcast in 2011 as part of the award-winning PBS history series American Experience. Bert has been leading tours to Scandinavia and throughout the Baltic region since the early 1990s. During our trip, he will discuss the influence of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel (1833–1896) and the origins and evolution of the Nobel Prize; the life and work of the Norwegian Romantic-era composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907); and common American misconceptions about the so-called Nordic economic model and Scandinavian social democracy.

What to Expect This is an active program that is at times physically demanding and busy. A variety of transportation methods will be used, from local trains to modern, air-conditioned motor coaches, as well as ferries and express boats. Daily activities involve up to two miles of walking, often on uneven terrain, and may include extended periods of standing in museums and churches. Participants must be physically fit and in active good health, with the ability to board trains using steps that may be steep. There is no porter service at train stations or aboard express boats, and although arrangements will be made to send larger luggage ahead, guests will be required to manage their own daypack and/or overnight bag for these journeys. Hotels have been chosen for their excellent locations and local character; service and upkeep are generally not to the standards of top hotels in mainland Europe. Rooms tend to be small, and preferred bed configurations are not always available. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.
