FACULTY LEADER BERT PATENAUDE Bert Patenaude, MA ’79, PhD ’87, teaches history and international relations at Stanford University, where he is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. His research into the origins of the Nobel Peace Prize and the rise of the international peace movement at the start of the 20th century inspired a chapter in his book A Wealth of Ideas: Revelations from the Hoover Institution Archives (Stanford University Press, 2006). His first book, The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (Stanford University Press, 2002), won the 2003 Marshall D. Shulman Book Prize and was made into a documentary film that was broadcast in 2011 as part of the award-winning PBS history series American Experience. Bert has been leading tours to Scandinavia and throughout the Baltic region since the early 1990s. During our trip, he will discuss the influence of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel (1833–1896) and the origins and evolution of the Nobel Prize; the life and work of the Norwegian Romantic-era composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907); and common American misconceptions about the so-called Nordic economic model and Scandinavian social democracy. — Instructor, Department of National Security Affairs, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, 1992–2000 — Recipient, Schieffelin Award for Teaching Excellence, Naval Postgraduate School, 1998 and 1999 — BA 1977, political science, Boston College — MA 1979 and PhD 1987, history—both Stanford University ITINERARY SUNDAY, JUNE 20 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN Arrive in Stockholm on Sunday and check in to our hotel for a three-night stay. • Sequence Stratigraphy and Palaeogeography of the Middle Jurassic Brent and Vestland Deltaic Systems, Northern North Sea
Sequence stratigraphy and palaeogeography of the Middle Jurassic Brent and Vestland deltaic systems, Northern North Sea ERIK FJELLAN GER, TINA R. OLSEN & JEAN LOUP RUBINO Fjellanger, E., Olsen, T. R. & Rubino, J. L.: Sequence stratigraphy and palaeogeography of the Middle Jurassic Brent and Vestland deltaic systems, Northern North Sea. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift. Vol. 76, pp. 75-106. Oslo 1996. ISSN 0029-196X. The regional development of the Middle Jurassic Brent Group (Northern North Sea) has been studied within a sequence stratigraphic framework, and four depositional sequences (Exxonian) have been recognized. The phases of Iowstand, progradation, aggradation, retrogradation and drowning of the 'classical' Brent deltaic system and a renewed deltaic progradation (the 'Vestland deltaic system') are illustrated by cross-sections and regional palaeogeographic maps. The Bajocian Brent delta progradation and aggradation developed during a period of varying rate of relative sea-levet rise, forming a continuous sheet-Iike package of delta front facies associations in front of heterogeneous delta plain deposits. The stacking pattern varies from strongly progradational near sequence boundaries at a minimum rate of sea-levet rise to aggradational during periods of pronounced sea-leve) rise. No delta incision or lowstand deposition due to major relative sea-levet falls is envisaged. The Early Bathonian delta retreat took place in retrogressive pulses, and was probably influenced by synsedimentary fault activity along the ancient Viking Graben structure, foniling an estuary in the Southern Viking Graben and gradually drowning the deltaic system in the Northern Viking Graben. After the maximum flooding of the Brent deltaic system in the Early Bathonian a second, pronounced deltaic progradation (the 'Vestland deltaic system') took place from the Central Viking Graben to ca.

In this illustrated essay, we can see how beliefs about Yggdrasil and Ragnarok are incorporated and transformed in the design and ornamentation of the unusual stave churches of Norway.
