The 23-episode serial (soap opera of sorts) is based on Farhat Ishtiaq's novel and inspired by a Nasir Turabi ghazal. Notwithstanding the craze it generated in Pakistan, the serial was broadcast to popular acclaim in India, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. Humsafar's leading stars, Fawad Afzal Khan and Mahira Khan, instantly turned into mass media icons in the world beyond Pakistan. In this class we will explore how classical lyrical poetry and Urdu novel's melodrama contour the aesthetic parameters of Urdu serials in general and Humsafar in particular. We will delve into how issues of gender and sexuality in modern South Asia are tempered by women's "reformist" literature springing from the traditions of Nazir Ahmed, Ashraf Ali Thanavi, and A.R. Khatoon. We will also study theories of reception—especially the reception of Fawad Khan in India and Pakistan. In this vein, we will address the ways in which India and Pakistan share the ground of popular culture in spite of nationalist divides.

As both countries share a common passion – films and music can bridge the difference between the two.”1 In a more recent interview from May 2016, Zafar reflects on the unprecedented success of his career in India, celebrating his work in cinema as groundbreaking and forecasting a bright future for Indo-Pak collaborations in entertainment and culture.2 His optimism is signaled by a wish to reach an even larger global fan base, as he mentions his dream of working in Hollywood and joining other Indian émigré stars like Priyanka Chopra.

  • Crossover Stars in the Hindi Film Industry; Globalizing Pakistani Identity
CROSSOVER STARS IN THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY This book explores the cultural politics of Pakistani crossover stardom in the Hindi film industry as a process of both assimilation and “Otherness”. Analysing the career profiles of three crossover performers – Ali Zafar, Fawad Khan, and Mahira Khan – as a relevant case study, it unites critical globalization studies with soft power theory in exploring the potential of popular culture in conflict resolution. The book studies the representation and reception of these celebrities, while discussing themes such as the meaning of being a Pakistani star in India, and the consequent identity politics that come into play. As the first comprehensive study of Pakistani crossover stardom, it captures intersections between political economy, cultural representation, and nationalist discourse, at the same time reflecting on larger questions of identity and belonging in an age of globalization. Crossover Stars in the Hindi Film Industry will be indispensable to researchers of film studies, media and cultural studies, popular culture and performance, peace and area studies, and South Asian studies. It will also be of interest to enthusiasts of Indian cinematic history. Dina Khdair is an independent scholar. She has an MA in Media and Cinema Studies from DePaul University, Illinois, USA. She has presented original work at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies and was a contributor for the online journal Antenna through the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. • Vandalism on Advertisement Boards in Pakistan Dr
Vandalism on Advertisement Boards in Pakistan Dr. Ahmad Bilal* & Aysha Bilal** ABSTRACT: Women’s faces on advertisement billboards are always in danger of being blackened or of being defaced by, so called, moral brigades in Pakistan. These incidents were first noted, in cities like Lahore and Islamabad around 2006 and 2007, during the ‘islah (reform) campaign’ by the Lal Masjid. However, this vandalism has never been reported to the authorities by the advertisers or clients, which means the damage is not to cause business loss. Advertisements are made, after a thorough research, to cater larger audiences, and these images must have some relevance to the consumers; however, blackening of the images on advertisement boards, reveals that a specific segment of the society has been disagreeing or poling apart from the rest. It seems that, in their point of view, these pictures are harmful for the society in general, or maybe dangerous for themselves in particular. They also want a wider and loud coverage of their message, as the hoardings are placed at the hot spots in a city. This paper deconstruct the act of vandalism with the advertising images of females to decipher the mindset of the vandals. Keywords: Images, billboards, vandalism, advertising, Islamist brigade * Email: [email protected] ** Email: [email protected] Journal of Research (Humanities) 206 No one could ignore the torn hoarding of TUC biscuits, a multinational snack company, while passing by the famous crossing of Shama Metro Station, on Ferozepur Road, Lahore, in the month of October 2017 (fig. 1)1.
