  • Newsletter No 5
Queen’s Jubilee Issue BAHG Newsletter Issue 5, June 2012 Thurleigh airfield under construction, June 1952, Tunnel site, before move of water tower, April 1952, with steel showing the new alignment of the main runway sections of the 8x8 ft tunnel Queen’s Jubilee With the nation celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, we thought it appropriate in this issue to review connections between RAE Bedford and the Royal Family. The top photographs are a reminder of work in progress in constructing NAE/RAE Bedford when the Queen came to the throne in 1952. Wind Tunnel Jubilee The first wind tunnel to be completed at RAE Bedford was the 3ft x 3ft supersonic tunnel. It conducted its first calibration runs on 29 April 1952. When the 25th anniversary of this event was celebrated in 1977 tunnel staff sent a loyal message to congratulate HM the Queen on the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne, also noting the 25th anniversary of the commissioning of the wind tunnel, the first of the post-war facilities to be completed at Bedford. A reply from Buckingham Palace expressed the Queen’s thanks. This exchange of letters has recently emerged in some papers donated to BAHG. The circulation of our newsletter has stimulated donations of several sets of papers like this from former staff. In 1952, of course, the Bedford establishment was still known as the National Aeronautical Establishment, but its “Royal” nature was affirmed in December 1955, when the NAE label seems finally to have been dropped and the Royal Aircraft Establishment label applied.

(By email) Our Ref: MGLA031120-9207 3 December 2020 Dear Thank you for your request for information which the Greater London Authority (GLA) received on 2 November 2020 in which you asked the GLA to release information about Remembrance Sunday and Coronavirus. Your request has been considered under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Please accept my apologies for the slightly late response. You requested: • Planning documents related to covid-19 and procedures for Remembrance Sunday 2020. • Planning documents regarding Mayor Sadiq Khan's attendance of any Remembrance Sunday memorial services in a formal capacity. Our response to your request is below: The GLA has located information within the scope of your request. Some information relates to the GLA's annual event which takes place on the Friday before Remembrance Sunday, and which is separate to the ceremony at the Cenotaph. City Hall This year, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Greater London Authority had planned for a hybrid event. There would have been a Remembrance service on Friday 6 November in the Chamber at City Hall to pay respect. The GLA had planned for a smaller than usual event, with a minimal number of people and with social distancing arrangements, as you will see from the attached documents. However, in the light of the national lockdown from 2 November, this event was cancelled and replaced by a pared down version of the ceremony with pre-recorded inserts. Since your request was received, the recording has been published on our website: https://www.london.gov.uk/events/2020-11-06/remembrance-day-2020 https://www.london.gov.uk/press-releases/mayoral/online-remembrance-service The Cenotaph The Mayor of London also attended the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph on Sunday 8 November.

  • Kings, Queens, Tsars, and Commissars Russia Gets the Roya
Kings , Queens, Tsars , and Commissars Russia Gets the Roya¡ Treatment ANN E. ROBERTSON Monarchy can be caz integral parí of denrocratic state structure and personifYv spiritual and historical unity of the nation. -Boris Yeltsin to Queen Elizabeth 11, 18 October 1994 F or Moscow, the Cold War symbolically ended in October 1994, when Queen Elizabeth lI of Great Britain made an historie state visit to Russia. Ending nearly a century of chilly relations between London and Moscow, the state visit was the final stage of a reconciliation process begun by Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev in December 1984. Throughout the twentieth century, the Soviet Union and Russia have received royal rewards for good behavior and roya] snubs for actions that displeased the British government. After carefully doling out roya¡ recognition to the USSR, Britain sent its queen to welcome post-communist Russia to the post-Cold War world. For Boris Yeltsin, royalty not only has become a stamp of international approval, but also a safe outlet for Russian nationalism and a convenient shorthand for condemning his Bolshevik ancestors. As the most visible modern royal family, Britain's House of Windsor can leve] significantly more weight in diplomatic attitudes toward foreign countries than can minor or deposed crowned heads. Dinner with the Emperor of Japan may be nice, for example, but Yeltsin finds more prestige in hosting the British queen. The Windsors also have dynastic and historical ties to Russia. Britain is, of course, a constitutional monarchy. The sovereign may advise the prime minister, but has no real political authority. Instead, as head of state, the monarch represents her government and embodies history, continuity, and national pride.
