Voortrekkers were groups of nineteenth- century Afrikaners who migrated north from the Cape colony into the South African interior to escape British rule. 2. ‘Township’ is the name given by colonial and later apartheid authorities to underdeveloped, badly resourced urban living areas, usually on the outskirts of white towns and cities, which were set aside for the black workforce. 3. See, for example, Liz Gunner on Zulu radio drama since 1941 (2000), David Coplan on township music and theatre (1985) and Isabel Hofmeyr on the long- established Afrikaans magazine Huisgenoot (1987). 4. In 1984 the NP launched what it called a ‘tricameral’ parliament, a flawed and divisive attempt at reforming the political system. After a referendum among white voters it gave limited political representation to people classi- fied as coloured and Indian, although black South Africans remained com- pletely excluded. Opposition to the system came from both the left and right and voting rates among non- whites remained extremely low, in a show of disapproval of what many viewed as puppet MPs. 5. The State of Emergency was declared in 1985 in 36 magisterial districts. It was extended across the whole country in 1986 and given an extra year to run in 1989. New measures brought in included the notorious 90- day law, in which suspects could be held without trial for 90 days, after which many were released and then re- arrested as they left the prison. 6. According to André Brink, ‘The widespread notion of “traditional Afrikaner unity” is based on a false reading of history: strife and division within Afrikanerdom has been much more in evidence than unity during the first three centuries of white South African history’ (1983, 17). -

Satanic Panic studies this moral frenzy from a vast array of perspectives in fascinating depth, outlining the fears of anxious parents and a confused mainstream culture about teens supposedly embroiled in Satanic cults and potentially carrying out ritual abuse, devil worship, suicide or murder at any given moment. Following the rise of interest in the occult from the 1960s onward, it's easy to see why Reagan's America, still reeling from the confusion of Vietnam and the implications for the 'American Dream', morality and family values, latched onto something so easily sensationalised as a scapegoat to blame for all of society's problems. -

The events that brought Martensville, Saskatchewan to national and international attention in 1992 were similar in many respects to other panics concerning multiple allegations of child abuse that occurred in the Western world in the 1980s and 1990s. The methodology of the study included a review of descriptions of child abuse panics published in the mass media and in books and journal articles. Interviews were conducted with residents of Martensville, child advocates, reporters, investigators, officers of the court, expert witnesses and several of the accused. -

In this article, I argue that late twentieth-century satanic ritual abuse discourse helped perpetuate intolerance toward non-Christian religions and foreclose conditions of possibility for benign religious difference in the United States. Psychological diagnoses related to satanic ritual abuse fueled popular anxieties regarding the sexual peril of American minority religions. Perpetuating diagnoses of satanic ritual abuse reinforced popular suspicions that religious minorities are dangerous, particularly when it comes to matters of sexuality. Pizzagate 1.0: The Satanic Ritual Abuse Panic of the 1980s Amanda Pursell University at Buffalo When the modern American thinks of moral panics, we tend to think of sex, drugs, and alcohol. News reports of “rainbow parties,” “vodka tampons,” and strange new drugs that turn ordinary teens into face eating zombies flash through our minds. We like to think we’ve gone beyond fears of demonic forces lurking in the night, but that isn’t necessarily true. From the Salem witch trial to today, moral panics tend to be spiritual in nature, and often result in witch hunts that have lingering effects on not just the individuals accused, but society itself.1 These panics usually occur in periods of great social change and economic stress and work as a release valve.2 After the Great Depression and Word War 2, a witch hunt, in the “Red” and “Lavender” scares of the 1950s ruined the lives of countless people who were blacklisted for their suspected “Communistic” leanings and sexual preferences. In the 1980s, an economic downturn, the civil rights movement, and the culture wars that began in the 1960s came together in the form of the Satanic Panic. Fueled by tabloid stories of child abductions, sexual abuse, cults, and “recovered memories,” the very real threat of pedophilia collided with the spiritual threat of a vast network of Satanist lurking in America’s heartland, praying on children left in their care. This panic took the country by storm for several years, lead to the most expensive trial in American history, and left countless lives destroyed, just to fizzle out as quickly as it started. -

I In fact, one popular book, now in its second edition, is devoted entirely to the topic (Loseke, Gelles, & Cavanaugh, 2005). To be sure, there is no shortage of controversies to discuss. Indeed, it is probably safe to conclude that within psychology and sociology, few topics generate more con- troversy than family violence, of which child maltreatment is an integral part. We focus this chapter on current controversial issues in the field for several reasons. First, most of the controversial topics discussed in this chapter are inherently interesting. Students often have strong opinions about many of these topics, and discussions can be lively. Second, examining controversies teaches us something about how social issues come to be seen as social problems. The topic of child maltreatment draws together professionals from many different fields, and these professionals often have competing interests and make competing claims. -

www.crimejusticejournal.com IJCJ&SD 2015 4(2): 77‐93 ISSN 2202–8005 Dissecting Disbelief: Possible Reasons for the Denial of the Existence of Ritual Abuse in the United Kingdom Kate Richardson Researcher in Child Abuse and Exploitation, United Kingdom Abstract When allegations of ritual abuse first came to light in the UK, they were met primarily with a ‘discourse of disbelief’ that left little room for the possibility accounts could be based in genuine experience. Despite convictions, recent criminological, sociological and psychological literature appears fixed on debunking ritual abuse’s existence through highly debated concepts such as ‘false memory’. This paper proposes three broad ‘reasons’ for the creation and maintenance of disbelief around ritual abuse, highlighting the importance of key cases in shaping press coverage of the issue during the 1980s and 1990s, and the role survivor advocates have played in distancing ritual abuse from established knowledge within both psychology and child protection. I argue that the tangibility of death and abject horror within survivor accounts, as well as the perceived religious motivations of perpetrators, make ritual abuse both experientially and conceptually alien to most members of late‐modern societies. Introduction One of the more common experiences that unites survivors of child abuse is that of having one’s abusive history denied, disbelieved or minimised; indeed, feminist research has long documented the public silencing of women and children’s disclosures of abuse and exploitation (Hlavka 2014). For survivors of ritual abuse, whose abusive experiences are routinely classified as ‘false memories’ and for whom validating and informed professional support is sparse, this silence has been particularly deafening. -
