The eastern regions of Russia are the convenient zone in which Russia cooperates with the actively developing Asian region. The key states of North-East Asia such as China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea are the largest participants in world trade at the present stage. The servicing of large- scale commodity flows with the European Union and the U.S. is provided by the market of transport services, by means of which the most effective schemes of delivery are built. Under these conditions, the transport system of the East of Russia has objective prerequisites for integration into the international transport system. The goal of our present study is to assess the potential of integration of the transport system of the Far East in the market of transport services in North-East Asia. At the same time, we assess integration opportunities with the help of dividing the territory of the East of Russia into districts based on the results of cluster analysis. Considering the achievement of the research goal, this approach is a new one. The need for division is due to the fact that the Far East is quite a large region, extremely heterogeneous in its internal composition, economic-geographical and socio-economic characteristics. -

70 Chapter 3 Chapter 3 Sakhalin Island: Nivkh The Nivkh (or Gilyak in older literature) have traditionally inhabited the north- ern half of Sakhalin Island and adjacent regions of the mainland. They are relatively homogeneous in the cultural sense; their differences are mainly based on local adaptations to geographic environments, and the two distinct dialects, Sakhalin and mainland, are mutually intelligible. Their ethnic compo- sition is more homogeneous than that of their Tungusic-speaking Amur neigh- bors as it consists of a large core of kin groups of Nivkh origin and a minority of lineages that trace their descent to non-Nivkh ethnic ancestors, mainly those of Amur groups and Ainu. Nivkh culture, with its emphasis on sedentary fishing, is to a large extent analogous to those of their Amur and Ainu neighbors; however, the specialized maritime hunting of the coastal Nivkh was of a significance equal to fishing, and their sea-mammal hunting technology as well as the belief system empha- sizing marine animal cults connect the Nivkh with North Pacific coastal cul- tures of both sides of the Bering Strait, and archaeologically, with the maritime Okhotsk culture of the southern Sea of Okhotsk and the Old Koryak culture of northern Sea of Okhotsk. Other traits that distinguish the traditional Nivkh culture from their neighbors are aspects of their non-material culture such as corpse disposal by cremation and the alliance of three lineage units based on asymmetric connubium that contrasts with the reciprocal connubium charac- teristic for the mainland Tungus society as well as for the Amur ethnic com- plex. -
Simushir (January 15, 2009) and Samoa (September 30, 2009) Tsunami Recording in the Area of South Kuril Islands

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia, (2) Sakhalin Tsunami Warning Center, Federal Service of Russia for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia Institute of Marine Geology & Geophysics (the Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences) carried out long wave measurements in the area of South Kuril Islands with the purpose of tsunami recording closely to the seismic active zone and study long wave spectra variability depending of weather conditions. Bottom pressure gauges were installed in several harbors of Shikotan Island, near Cape Lovtsov (north-eastern end of Kunashir Island), in the Kitoviy Bay (Iturup Island) and near Cape Van-der-Lind (Urup Island). Sakhalin Tsunami Center has a cable telemetry tsunami warning station in the Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island). Two tsunamis - a remote Samoa (September 30) and nearby Simushir tsunami (January 15) were recorded by different gauges in the area of South Kuril Islands and by telemetry station in Severo-Kurilsk. To examine spectral properties of long wave oscillations at each gauge, we calculated power spectral estimation using two different data segments (both 1 day length): the period preceding the tsunami event, we identified as “normal” and selected for analysis of the background signal; the “tsunami period” included tsunami caused oscillations. -

Abstract: Seasonal stock-specific distribution and abundance of immature chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in the western Bering Sea in summer 2003 and fall 2002–2003 were determined using scale pattern analysis. Results indicated that immature chum salmon were predominantly of Asian (Russian and Japanese) origin. There was considerable spatial and temporal variation in estimated proportions of regional stocks of chum salmon. -

INTR.ODUCTION The Chukotsky and Bering Seas, the seas of • Okhotsk and of Japan, which was the Far Eastern Shores of the Soviet Union, cover immense areas. The multitude of animals inhabiting these seas is extremely varied. Of fish alone there are up to 800 species, among which some 200 are or can be regarded as exploitable species. Up to the present time the salmon and herring have. been of prevalent industrial importance in the Far East. The immense reserves of these fish, relative simplicity and high effectiveness of the fishing methods employed during the spawning period, simplicity of processing in- volved, excellence of quality of the finished product, all these factors appealed to industrial fishing, fish-proces- sing and fish-marketing organizations. As a result, the entire fishing industry of the Far East was until recen- tly, a passive industry --90% of the catch was obtained by means of stationary fishing implements or fishing cordage cast from the shore (such as seines and casting nets, etc.). -

WWF strongly supported the increase in fines for illegal fishing initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture. Public discussion concerning the Russian government’s draft decree ended on October 9th. The decree would set fines up to 20 times higher than current levels for some species. While we do not consider these measures to be an absolute remedy, the fine amounts will be significant enough to be noticed Sergey Rafanov, by poachers. The measures can be seen as a good the Director of the starting point for further steps to stop illegal activity. Kamchatka Bering Sea Ecoregional Office However, poaching for fish isn’t only a Kamchatka problem. The WWF-Russia Kamchatka Office and its partners have valuable experience to share. In autumn, our colleagues from WWF-Russia Barents Sea Ecoregional Office came to the peninsula to learn about Kamchatka’s anti-poaching activity on the Bolshaya River. And now public inspectors will work on the Varzuga River in the Murmansk region. The operations of two mining companies in Kamchatka remain under strict examination within the framework of the Environmental Responsibility Rating and the gradation system introduced in 2017. The companies, however, did not improve their positions compared to the previous March 2017 rating. This result urges us to look for new opportunities to engage mining operators in improving the environmental aspect of their work in 2018.
