They were years of economic crisis, war, and political upheaval. America, as Tennessee Williams said, "... was matriculating in a school for the blind." They were years of bewilderment and frustration for the common man. For many American writers and thinkers, the events of the decade called for several changes from the twenties; a move to the political left, a concern for the misery of the masses, sympathy for the labor movement, support of the Communist Party, hope for Russia as a symbol of the future, fear and hatred of fascism. -

Media History Monographs 12:1 (2010) ISSN 1940-8862 The Edward R. Murrow of Docudramas and Documentary By Lawrence N. Strout Mississippi State University Three major TV and film productions about Edward R. Murrow‟s life are the subject of this research: Murrow, HBO, 1986; Edward R. Murrow: This Reporter, PBS, 1990; and Good Night, and Good Luck, Warner Brothers, 2005. Murrow has frequently been referred to as the “father” of broadcast journalism. So, studying the “documentation” of his life in an attempt to ascertain its historical role in supporting, challenging, and/or adding to the collective memory and mythology surrounding him is important. Research on the docudramas and documentary suggests the depiction that provided the least amount of context regarding Murrow‟s life (Good Night) may be the most available for viewing (DVD). Therefore, Good Night might ultimately contribute to this generation (and the next) having a more narrow and skewed memory of Murrow. And, Good Night even seems to add (if that is possible) to Murrow‟s already “larger than life” mythological image. ©2010 Lawrence N. Strout Media History Monographs 12:1 Strout: Edward R. THE GREAT IDEAS ONLINE o Feb 16 Philosophy is Everybody’s Business N 853 Clifton Fadiman (May 15, 1902 – June 20, 1999) THE JOY OF READING Clifton Fadiman Unlike many men of letters, Clifton Fadiman thought of himself primarily as a guide to the wisdom of others. But as a guide, Fadiman had few equals: for over 60 years, the editor, essayist, anthologist, and broadcast personality led countless readers to myriad subjects. As an editor and judge for the Book-of-the-Month Club for over 50 years, he helped shape the reading choices of countless Americans. He wrote for the Encyclopaedia Britannica as well as numerous magazines and compiled over two dozen an- thologies on subjects ranging from mathematics to poetry to the pun. On radio and television programs, most notably the radio quiz show Information, Please!, he become a model of wit and er- udition. He wrote informal essays for Holiday magazine for 10 years, and more than 65 introductions to books ranging from The Martian Chronicles to War and Peace. For one anthology of short stories, he wrote not only the introduction, but also 63 commen- taries. In the early 1980s, Fadiman, who once listed his avoca- tions as wine and "the avoidance of exercise," co-authored the compendium The Joys of Wine with Sam Aaron. Fadiman once estimated that he had read over 25,000 books in his life. 2 At Columbia, Fadiman became lifelong friends with some of the College's most illustrious teachers and alumni: Jacques Barzun, Mark Van Doren (saluted by Fadiman in the essay, "What Makes a Teacher Great?"), Mortimer Adler, and Whittaker Chambers, whom Fadiman encouraged to read The Communist Manifesto. -

Obtaining and studying any one of his three operas should be important for establishing him as more than a popular-music composer. Levant's opera Carnival, from the 20th Century Fox movie Charlie Chan at the Opera, is especially worthy of consideration. Through careful analysis of this work, much can be learned about the style and interests of Oscar Levant. While comparisons to other composers and their works may be too extensive for this specific paper, some comparisons to Levant's own popular tunes of the same time period as Carnival may reveal remarkable similarities and/or differences. Along with an analysis of the score, observation of the opera as it is presented in the movie will provide information about the basis for its content and reveal its incorporation into the movie's plot. In addition, seeing the movie will give aural information, such as the types of instruments used. The interest in this topic stems from Oscar Levant's own books A Smattering of Ignorance, The Unimportance of Being Oscar, and The Memoirs of an Amnesiac. He refers to this opera in A Smattering of Ignorance. but his references to his musical acquaintances in The Memoirs of an Amnesiac may supply additional facts to help in understanding his musical style. Examining c 'arnival will contribute to showing the significance of Oscar Levant's style of composition. -

More specifically, I examine how and why often marginalized southern vernacular musicians, especially Mississippi blues singer Robert Johnson, were celebrated during the folk revivals of the 1930s and 1960s as possessing something inherently American, and differentiate these periods of intense interest in the traditional music of the American South from the most recent example of revivalism early in the new millennium. http://www.ucalgary.ca/hic • ISSN 1492-7810 2010/11 • Vol. 9, No. 1 Whittaker Chambers: The Lonely Voice of Tragedy on the Postwar Right Hyrum Lewis Abstract In historical discourse, Whittaker Chambers has too easily been lumped in with other midcentury conservative anti- communists. While those on the right have held him up as a hero in the American struggle for victory against “godless communism” and those on the left see him as exemplary of the excesses and damaging overzealousness of the early Cold War, Chambers defies such simplistic categorization. His subtle, nuanced thought differed considerably from that of other conservative intellectuals of the time and drew from sources outside the standard conservative canon. Thus, this despairing existentialist became an inspiration and a model for the America Right even as he differed with those he inspired on philosophical essentials. Historians commonly remember Whittaker Chambers as the central witness in one of the most important spy cases of the twentieth century and as one of the founders and icons of conservative anti-communism. Born in 1901 and raised in a middle-class Long Island home, Chambers went off to Columbia University as a young man, but then dropped out to join the communist underground. In the late 1930s, disillusioned by Stalin’s purges and the Nazi-Soviet pact, Chambers defected from communism, underwent a religious conversion, moved to a Maryland farm, and took a job as a book reviewer, foreign affairs columnist, and senior editor at Time magazine where he became one of the leading anti-communist journalists in America. -
