Looe, East & West

East is a borough and market town, in the parish of St Martin, and in the hundred of West; 232 miles from London, 53 from Exeter, and about 16 miles west of Plymouth. The town is situated on the east side of the river Looe, over which is a very ancient bridge of 14 arches, connecting it with the borough of West Looe. The situation of both these towns is very beautiful, and not exceeded in richness and diversity by any other in the county; this circumstance may account for the great number of gentlemen’s seats that are in this neighbourhood. The river washes the bases of the mountainous swells of ground on both sides; and West Looe is flanked by a prodigious eminence, that at a distance appears inaccessible, and in fact is one of the steepest spots in the county. Both these towns were incorporated by Queen Elizabeth. East Looe is governed by nine burgesses, and West Looe by twelve, from whom are annually chosen a mayor, recorder, and court of aldermen. Each town sends two members to parliament; the right of voting is in the capital and free burgesses of each borough. The present representatives of East Looe are, the Hon. William Lascelles, and Jas. Drummond Buller Elphinstone, Esq; the members for West Looe are, Sir Charles Hulse, Bart. And Charles Buller, Esq. These towns have no particular trade or manufacture; the pilchard-fishery is carried on in both. There are no mines within six miles of these places; but they derive some advantage from the shipping of the tin blocks, brought from the coinage town of by the Liskeard and Looe canal, lately completed. There is a chapel of ease, under St Martin’s, at East Looe; and also two chapels for dissenters. West Looe, which is also called ‘Port Pigham’, is in the parish of Talland, and the borough has no place of worship under the establishment besides the parish church; it formerly had a chapel of ease; but this has been converted into a town-hall, and the inhabitants go to Talland church. The market at East Looe is held on Saturday; West Looe market has been long discontinued, but it has a fair on the 6th of May, well supplied with cattle, &c. There are four fairs held annually at East Looe, but they are very insignificant. The population of the two boroughs, in 1821, was 1,309 persons. Post Office, Catherine TREGENNA, Post Mistress – letters from London and Falmouth arrive every morning at half-past nine, and are despatched every afternoon at half-past two.
