A Tribute to George Bundy Smith and E. Richard Larson The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) mourns the loss of the Hon. George Bundy Smith, who died Saturday August 5, 2017 and Richard Larson, who died July 22, 2017. “This month LDF lost two treasured members of our family, the Hon. George Bundy Smith, and attorney Richard Larson. Both these exceptional men represent the standard of excellence and commitment to justice that is the hallmark of LDF lawyers, and have left behind lasting contributions in the advancement of civil rights and in our profession,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, LDF’s President and Director-Counsel. Hon. George Bundy Smith George Bundy Smith was born on April 7, 1937 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a segregated neighborhood in Washington D.C., he went on to attend Yale University and Yale Law School, where he earned his law degree alongside his twin sister Inez Smith Reid. Smith followed his passion for civil rights early on, leaving law school during exams in his second year to travel to Montgomery, Alabama as a Freedom Rider. In 1961, Smith and about nine other Freedom Riders were arrested for sitting at an all-whites lunch counter. Thurgood Marshall, Lou Redding, Jack Greenberg, and Fred Gray represented Smith following his arrest, and Redding took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, where the conviction was overturned. After graduating from law school, Smith began his legal career as a staff attorney for LDF. From 1962-1964, Smith played a vital role in several prominent LDF cases.

Thomas Davis managed five plantations in Mississippi, including two inherited by his wife, and spent much of his time traveling. Annie Davis spent most of her time at his family home in Stateburg, SC. Shortly after Westmoreland Davis’ birth, his father, brother and sister died in quick succession. He and his mother moved to Richmond, VA to live with her uncle Richard Morriss (ca. 1822-1867). After the end of the Civil War the Davis’s were reduced to penury by the mismanagement of their plantations and legal obstacles to monies from bonds purchased by her father, Christopher Staats Morriss (1797-1850). Davis entered Virginia Military Institute as a scholarship student in 1873 at the age of 14.

  • Introduction
Introduction The Fozu tongji 佛祖統紀 (T 2035, Comprehensive History of the Buddhist Patriarchs) is a massive work of Buddhist historiography composed by the Southern Song monk Zhipan 志磐 (ca. 1220–1275). The present translation project, which is intended to have three volumes, refers to a part of the Fozu tongji entitled “Fayun tongsai zhi” 法運通塞志 (Monograph on Success and Obstructions in the Spread of the Dharma). The “Fayun tongsai zhi,” covering Fozu tongji, juan 34–48, is an annalistic chronicle of Buddhism in China. It goes through Chinese history dynasty by dynasty, ruler by ruler, and year by year, list- ing events following the chronological order. With the present project I intend to offer a complete translation of the “Fayun tongsai zhi.” In the present vol- ume, I translate the first five juan (i.e. Fozu tongji, juan 34–38), which contain the annals referring to the history of Buddhism in China from the time of the birth of the Buddha in the 26th year of King Zhao of Zhou 周昭王 to the end of the Nanbeichao period. In the second volume I will translate the next four juan of the “Fayun tongsai zhi” (i.e. Fozu tongji, juan 39–42), which have previously been translated by Jan Yün-hua,1 and refer to the history of Buddhism from the Sui dynasty to the end of the Wudai period. In the third volume I will translate the remaining six juan of the “Fayun tongsai zhi” (i.e. Fozu tongji, juan 43–48), which refer to the history of Buddhism in the Song dynasty up to the year 1236, the third year of the duanping 端平 era of the Southern Song emperor Lizong 理宗.

Biological, environmental and psychological theories of criminal behavior were studied which illustrated their significance to how a person can choose to commit a crime. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a presence or absence within multiple forms of childhood trauma experienced between the sexual serial killer and pedophile.
