Edward Tokyo University, Japan Abstract A creation myth is a social, customary or religious myth which portrays the most punctual beginnings of the present world. Creation myths are the most widely recognized type of myth, generally growing first in oral conventions, and are found all through human society. Sumpter (University of Pittsburgh) Abstract: This article examines the political and social atmosphere surrounding the production of the thirteenth-century hand scroll Kitano Tenjin engi emaki (Illustrated Legends of the Kitano Shrine), which depicts the life, death and posthumous revenge of the ninth-century courtier Sugawara no Michizane. The article combines an analysis of the content and religious iconography of the scroll, a study of early Japanese beliefs in angry spirits of the dead, and a narration of the actual life of Michizane in an attempt to produce a sketch of the rituals and superstitions of Heian and early Kamakura period Japanese society, and to suggest possible functions of the hand scroll that complement them. The hand scroll sets collectively known as the Kitano Tenjin engi emaki (Illustrated Legends of the Kitano Shrine) each tell the story of the life and death of the ninth- century courtier and poet, Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), and of the posthumous revenge undertaken by his vengeful spirit (onryô). According to the scrolls, Michizane was falsely accused of treason by rivals at the Heian court who were jealous of his astronomical rise to power. He was exiled to Dazaifu on the island of Kyushu in 901 and died there two years later in despair. His spirit persisted in seeking retribution against his enemies and in reclaiming his position and honours. He is said to have stalked his numerous rivals in the form of the thunder god (raijin) before ultimately revealing to a frightened court, through a series of intermediaries, the means of his pacification: deification and worship at the Kitano Shrine in Kyoto.1 Today the Kitano Tenjin engi emaki (hereafter referred to as the Tenjin scrolls) number more than thirty extant examples, ranging in date from the early thirteenth century to the nineteenth century.

While Tokujin is an artist – a representative of SCAF’s core focus group – he most frequently works within the framework of functional design: furniture, lighting and cutting-edge retail, restaurant and fashion interiors. Art and design, long separated into rigorous categories, now periodically overlap in the upper echelons of innovative creative practices. In the second decade of the twenty- first century, how do these two disciplines interrelate? The aftermath of the postmodern period has given rise to intersecting creative endeavours. Art schools worldwide no longer pigeonhole students in sculpture, painting, printmaking or medium-specific departments. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice.

The current thesis seeks to bring to light the various rituals, traditions and beliefs surrounding pregnancy in Japanese society, arguing that, although changed, they are still very much alive and a large part of the pregnancy experience. Current perception and ideas were gathered through a series of in depth interviews with 31 Japanese females of varying ages and socio-cultural backgrounds. These current perceptions were then compared to and contrasted with historical data of a folkloristic nature, seeking to highlight developments and seek out continuities. This was done within the theoretical framework of the liminal nature of that which is betwixt and between as set forth by Victor Turner, as well as theories set forth by Mary Douglas and her ideas of the polluting element of the liminal.     Shelley Meagher Politics and Persian Mythology in Irish Poetry IN 1809 LORD BYRON was prevented by the Napoleonic wars from taking the European Grand Tour. He instead sailed south, through the straits of Gibraltar and across the Mediterranean, to tour Greece and Turkey. On his return he published the first two Cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812), a poem whose hero follows in Byron’s wake eastwards. Gratified by the acclaim Childe Harold received, Byron next published two action poems set in Turkey, The Giaour (1813) and The Bride of Abydos (1813). These fluent ‘Turkish Tales’, as he called them, sold very well and whetted the public’s appetite. On the day Byron’s next Turkish tale, The Corsair, came out in 1814, it sold 10,000 copies. There was one problem. For two and a half years Byron’s friend, Thomas Moore, had been composing a poem set in the Persianate cultures of Mughal India and Persia (as Europeans then termed Iran). Moore was alert to differences between Turkish and Persian culture. But to the general public, both cultures were simply eastern. When sales of Byron’s Turkish poems rocketed, Moore fretted that Byron had stolen his opportunity. Byron tried to allay Moore’s fears. ‘Stick to the East!’ he wrote to Moore in May 1813. ‘The little I have done . is only a “voice in the wilderness” for you; and, if it has had any success, that will only prove that the public is orientalising, and pave the way for you.’1 When, six months later, Byron proceeded to pave Moore’s way further with The Corsair, he knew very well that Moore would be alarmed.
