AD) Andrea Zerbini Department of Classics and Philosophy Royal Holloway University of London PhD in Classics 1 2 Abstract This thesis analyses the social and economic structures that characterised settlement in ecologically marginal regions in the Roman to early-Arab Levant (1st-8th c. AD). Findings show that, far from being self-sufficient, the economy of marginal zones relied heavily on surplus production aimed at marketing. The connection of these regions to large-scale commercial networks is also confirmed by ceramic findings. The thesis is structured in four main parts. The first outlines the main debates and research trends in the study of ancient agrarian society and economy. Part II comprises a survey of the available evidence for settlement patterns in two marginal regions of the Roman Near East: the Golan Heights, the jebel al-cArab. It also includes a small- scale test study that concentrates on the long-term development of the hinterland of Sic, a hilltop village in the jebel al-cArab, which housed one of the most important regional sanctuaries in the pre-Roman and Roman period. Parts III and IV contain the core the thesis and concentrate on the Limestone Massif of northern Syria, a region located between the cities of Antioch, Aleppo (Beroia) and Apamea. Following settlement development from the 2nd c. BC to the 12 c. AD, these sections provide a comprehensive assessment of how a village society developed out of semi-nomadic groups (largely through endogenous transformations) and was able to attain great prosperity in Late Antiquity.

Arab Civilian and Military Captives in the Light of Byzantine Narrative Sources and Military Manuals from the 10th Century is safe to say that the 10th century was a military renaissance for the Byzan- It tines. During this period, the Eastern Empire waged numerous wars, broad- ened its boundaries and regained much of its formerly lost prestige. For the Byzan- tine emperors of the 10th century, the eastern front was the crucial one, due to the constant struggle with the Abbasid Caliphate1. In the course of this conflict – from which Byzantium emerged victorious – the capturing and enslaving of soldiers and civilians alike was an everyday reality. The main objective of this paper is to define the role of prisoners of war in the strategy and tactics of Byzantine generals. First, I will attempt to determine whether the latter treated the captives as a potential gain under various aspects (i.e. financial, prestige-related, or diplomatic). Next, I will focus on those situations in which prisoners were nothing more than a bur- den. With the help of narrative sources and military manuals, I will try to clarify why both sides occasionally decided to execute their captives in certain episodes of the 10th century Arab-Byzantine conflict. Finally, I will specify how Byzantine generals made use of prisoners in order to get the upper hand over their Arab rivals. It should be emphasized that the present research was carried out mainly on the basis of the written sources.

ABSTRACT In Byzantium, usurpation was made possible by the conflict between hereditary-dynastic and meritocratic-republican theories of rulership. Legitimacy was founded upon subjective notions of idealized moral-behavioural norms drawn from the imperial virtues and Christian ideology. Authority could be challenged when it was perceived to deviate from these norms. Investitures transformed a usurper from a private individual to an emperor on the basis of ratification by popular consent. The historic ritual of reluctance allowed emperors to present themselves as ‘moral ideals’ at the moment of proclamation, ridding them of blame for a usurpation. Guilt and sin were inevitable byproducts of usurpation, but imperial repentance facilitated an expiation and legitimized imperial authority in relation to moral ideals.

Zuckerman THE RELICS OF OUR LORD'S PASSION IN THE RUSSIAN PRIMARY CHRONICLE* The Povesť Vremennyh Let, known in English as the Russian Primary Chronicle [=RPC] inserts, under the year of creation 6420, the text of a treaty concluded by fifteen envoys of the Russian prince Oleg with the Emperors Leo, Alexander and Constantine on 2 September of the 15th indiction 6420, i.e. AD 911. According to the Chronicle, after the Russian delegation had completed its official business, its members were given a tour of the Byzantine capital: The emperor (Leo VI) honoured the Russian envoys with gifts of gold and silk and precious garments, and placed his men at their disposal to show them the beauties of the churches, the golden palace and the riches contained therein: much gold and silk and jewels, and the Passion of (our) Lord - the crown, the nails and the purple robe, as well as the relics of the saints, teaching them his faith and showing them the true faith1. This description is surprising on two counts. There were probably better ways to impress and to instruct the heathen Scandinavians (which is what Russians were at the time) than by showing them a selection of relics associated with Christ's passion and execution. Rather more to the point from our point of view is the fact that this alleged sighting of at least two of the relics in question, the Crown (of Thorns) and the Purple Robe, at Constantinople in 911, has no endorsement in any other source before or anywhere close to the date of the treaty, whose historicity is not in doubt.
