This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

REANIMATING DISSONANCE: CULTIVATING THE ANTECEDENTS OF BARRY HARRIS’ CONCEPT OF MOVEMENT AS A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PEDAGOGICAL TOOL FOR ONTARIO POST-SECONDARY JAZZ CURRICULA BRIAN JUDE DE LIMA A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2017 © Brian Jude de Lima, 2017 Abstract ii One of the challenges faced in post-secondary jazz education across the GTA is finding qualified instructors who are familiar with dialogical methods for teaching African American jazz histories. More specifically, finding and hiring African American instructors whose musical genealogy can be delineated from “black” oral/aural histories and can draw from these historicities. Unless the narratives of this music are unpacked, analyzed and taught from its internal elements, which embodies the symbiosis and synthesis of African American dance, theatrics, poetics and American black English that encapsulates the “African American-ness” in jazz, then there remains a risk that this folk music will become more and more diluted. Consequently, it is my belief that current music educators across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) should consider alternative methods of pedagogy if students are to understand the historicity— the historical authenticity of this African American folk music. The idea for this study originated from my observation of a lack of “African American- ness”—African American narratives not being used as a pedagogical tool in post-secondary jazz curricula across the GTA. Therefore, this multi-case study will lead to the creation of an alternative curriculum that incorporates new teaching methods based on African American narratives.

When I was first on the jazz scene in Victoria B.C., the jazz community admit I tried to discourage the idea, but Patti doesn’t discourage easily, and was made up of a very small but dedicated group.

For Immediate Release Contact: Anita Wong 1-416-219-6357 [email protected] Award-winning David Braid Sextet to perform at Jazz Festival Brasil Sextet is first Canadian band to be invited to take part in multi-city Brazil tour TORONTO, Canada – July 10, 2008 – Canadian award-winning Jazz ensemble The David Braid Sextet will be touring Brazil at its Sixth Annual Jazz Festival Brasil in September. As the first Canadian group to be invited to play at the festival, the David Braid Sextet will perform in six cities including Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Aracaju and Recife between September 3 and 13, 2008. The sextet will perform classic jazz of the swing era, with a particular focus on the repertoire of the Count Basie Orchestra. Members of the sextet span 30 years of experience, including performances with some of the key soloists associated with the Basie orchestra: Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Clark Terry, and Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, as well as performances with other classic jazz icons: Al Cohn, Sarah Vaughan, Oscar Peterson, Woody Herman, Nancy Wilson and Rosemary Clooney. Awarded with Canada’s prestigious 2005 Juno Award for “Best Jazz Album” and nominated again in 2006, the members of the David Braid Sextet include Kevin Turcotte, trumpet; Perry White, saxophone; Gene Smith, trombone; Steve Wallace, bass; and Nick Fraser, drums. Its leader, 33-year-old pianist David Braid, has garnered a reputation as “one of Canada’s most gifted young composers and pianists” (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) through releasing seven recordings and performances across Canada, United States, Europe, Australia, China and Japan.
