I just read the news that Goldin Auctions will be auctioning off the handcuffs placed on Lee Harvey Oswald’s wrists after he was arrested following the assassination of President Kennedy. Seems these cuffs belong to retired Dallas offi cer Ray Hawkins, and back then police offi cers had to purchase their own cuffs. The starting bid is $50,000. Previously, his wedding ring went for $108,000, his mug shot for $21,600, and his U.S. Marines raincoat for a mere $15,600. What in the world do people who win these items at Merry Christmas auction do with them? Put them on the bedroom wall, their man cave, or perhaps garage? I don’t get it. NOTE: The aroma of frying meatballs fi lled the air in most North End apartments every Sunday morning. My brother and I waited for Mama to start frying her meatballs so that we could enjoy one before the noontime meal. My recipe evolved from watching my mother prepare her bread crumbs for the meatballs. Most families had a special technique to acquire their desired taste. When I prepare my meatballs, I add one tablespoon of grated Romano cheese and one-eighth teaspoon of garlic powder (or one small chopped garlic clove) to the fl avored bread crumbs. These additions give me the taste and aroma of the meatballs I remember enjoying in my childhood.
