This was the time when some Akan clans came to- gether to form a kingdom with Kumase as their capital,, some few years earlier. This apparently new territory was not the original home of the Asante. Originally all the ances- tors of the Asante lived at Adansc/Amansle.' The above assertion does not agree with Eva Meyerowitz's2 view that the Akan formerly lived along the Niger bend in the regions lying roughly between Djenne and Timbucto. There Is no evidence to support such mass migrations from outside.3 Adanse is therefore an important ancestral home of many Twi speakers. The area is traditionally known in Akan cosmogony as the place where God (Odomankoma) started the creation of the world, such as the ideas of the clan <snd kinship. Furthermore, Adanse was the first of the five principal Akan states of Adanse, Akyem Abuakwa, Assen, Denkyfra and Asante (The Akanman Piesle Num) In order of seniority.5 Evidence of the above claim for Adanse is shown by the fact that most of the ruling clans of the Akan forest states trace their origins to Adanse.

    1 Hypotheses on the Diachronic Development of the Akan Language Group Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, Department of Akan-Nzema, University of Education, Winneba [email protected] Cell: +233 244 732 172 Abstract Historical linguists have already established the constituent varieties of the Akan language group as well as their relationships with other languages. What remains to be done is to reconstruct the Proto- Akan forms and this is what this paper sets out to accomplish. One remarkable observation about language is that languages change through time. This is not to obscure the fact that it is at least conceivable that language could remain unchanged over time, as is the case with some other human institutions e.g. various taboos in some cultures or the value of smile as a nonverbal signal. Be that as it may, the mutually comprehensible varieties of the codes that constitute the Akan language group have evidently undergone some changes over the course of time. However, they lack adequate written material that can take us far back into the history of the Akan language to enable any diachronic or historical linguist to determine hypotheses on their development. Besides, if empirical data from the sister Kwa languages or from the other daughters of the Niger-Congo parent language were readily available, then the reconstruction of the Proto-Akan forms would be quite straightforward. But, unfortunately, these are also hard to come by, at least, for the moment. Nevertheless, to reconstruct a *proto-language, historical linguists have set up a number of methods, which include the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language universals and linguistic typology among others.

    History of Ghana Early History The earliest recorded human habitation within the boundaries of modern Ghana, dates back to circa 10000 BC on the Oti River. The oldest date for pottery at the Stone Age site near Accra is 4000 BC. Empire of Ancient Ghana The empire of ancient Ghana is not geographically, ethnically, or in any other way related to modern Ghana. Ancient Ghana would have been found 400 miles northwest of modern Ghana, in the areas now known as Northern Senegal and Southern Mauritania. Ancient Ghana came into existence when, at the start of the first millennium, a number of clans of the Soninke people, a Mande speaking people living in the region bordering the Sahara, came together under the leadership of Dinga Cisse. It is likely that the Soninke was formed in response to the attacks form nomadic raiders suffering from drought and seeking new territory. Ancient Ghana derived its power and wealth from gold, and the introduction of the camel increased their ability to transport goods. The majority of the knowledge of Ghana comes from Arab writers who reported that the Soninke people also sold slaves, salt, and copper in exchange for textiles, beads, and finished goods. Their capital city, Kumbi Saleh, was built on the edge of the Sahara and quickly became the most dynamic and important terminus of the Saharan trade routes. The wealth of ancient Ghana is mythically explained in the tale of Bida, the black snake. The snake demanded an annual sacrifice in return for guaranteeing prosperity in the Kingdom. Each year a virgin was offered as a sacrifice, until one year, the fiancé of the sacrificial virgin rescued her.

  • The Adinkra Symbols Reveal the Theology of the Akans People of Ghana
    Abstract The real price for accepting that there is only way of doing hermeneutics, and ultimately, theology has been the sacrifice of some of the significant models in the scriptures that God has given us for hermeneutical and theological enterprises. One of the models that we should not have been blind to is the model of Symbols for theology. A symbol may be an art piece, a ritual, a dance form, a saying, silence, countenance, a story, a song, or other realities like that, which serve as a metaphor, and which is pregnant with a story (or sacred story, which I call myth in this dissertation) that points to a religious, social or economic understanding of a people. In this work, I present the Adinkra Symbols of the Akan as such symbols, and as a route to showing the theology of the Akan people of Ghana. My aim is to encourage Symbolic Theology (as a branch of ethnotheology) through ethnohermeneutics, for people of the Majority World like Africa. In Africa where symbolisms occupy a great space in epistemology and religion, Symbolic Theology may be very appropriate. The extent, to which Scripture uses symbols for doing theology in both the Old and New Testaments, is not only far reaching, but is also surely meant for our emulation. However, we have not been exploring this symbolic way of doing theology in the deeper and extensive ways that we should have been doing. I am submitting that some of the effective ways of doing theology is to use symbols. At least two reasons account for this affirmation.

    New Tools for the Analysis of Political Power in Africa Ilia Rainer and Francesco Trebbi∗ April 2012 Abstract The study of autocracies and weakly institutionalized countries is plagued by scarcity of information about the relative strength of different players within the political sys- tem. This paper presents novel data on the composition of government coalitions in asampleoffifteen post-colonial African countries suited to this task. We emphasize the role of the executive branch as the central fulcrum of all national political systems in our sample, especially relative to other institutional bodies such as the legislative assembly. Leveraging on the impressive body of work documenting the crucial role of ethnic fragmentation as a main driver of political and social friction in Africa, the paper further details the construction of ethnic composition measures for executive cabinets.
