For three years, Vaslav Nijinsky had garnered international acclaim for his unparalleled virtuosity and emotive performances. He had also earned a degree of “lilac-hued notoriety”1 for a rather public affair with his director, Serge Diaghilev. But on this late spring evening, Nijinsky’s queer eroticism began to outstrip his technical prowess in the public imaginary. For on this night, he abandoned the pirouettes and grand jetés for which he was famed and feigned masturbation on the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet. Inspired by Mallarmé’s poem of the same name, Nijinsky’s daring choreographic debut, Afternoon of a Faun featured a forest-dwelling satyr entranced by a passing nymph. Ineluctably drawn to the disrobing Nymph, he attempts to seduce her, but she escapes, leaving behind only a scarf, which he spirits away to his lair. In the final moments of the dance, the Faun thrusts himself suggestively upon the abandoned token. Despite the scandal of Nijinsky’s simulated autoeroticism, the premiere of Afternoon of a Faun was and is widely recognized as the first modern ballet and as such created a new paradigm for viewing bodies in motion.

This term originated in Ralph Blumenthal’s (1973) New York Times article bearing the same name, and soon entered into discussions on pornography’s role within that decade’s liberal trends of morality and sexuality, before achieving later ubiquity in various inquiries into porn’s 21st century cultural status (See McNair 2012). This was prompted by the succès de scandale of Deep Throat (Gerard Damiano, 1972), Behind The Green Door (Artie and Jim Mitchell, 1972), The Resurrection of Eve (Jon Fontana and Artie Mitchell, 1973) and The Devil in Miss Jones (Gerard Damiano, 1973). All of these films were male authored, but dealt in some way with both the potential and the limitations of a female protagonist’s sexual assertion relative to masculine primacy, in scenarios which were either conventionally dramatic, comedic or even steeped in the supernatural. However, in Forced Entry, not only is the film male authored, but its point of view is channelled through a psychologically disturbed Vietnam war veteran - now a New York gas station attendant - who stalks selected female customers before raping and murdering them in their homes, seemingly as a punishment for sexual assertiveness and social independence which threaten his fragile claims to masculine authority.

    Matt Connolly Solidification and Flux on the “Gay White Way”: Gay Porn Theaters in Post-Stonewall New York City Abstract This paper traces the exhibition strategies of two gay porn theaters in New York City from 1969-1973: the 55th Street Playhouse and the Eros I. It draws upon contemporaneous advertising and trade press to reconstruct these histories, and does so in the pursuit of two interconnected goals. First, by analyzing two venues whose exhibition protocols shifted over the course of this time period, this paper seeks a more nuanced understanding of how gay porn theaters established, maintained, and augmented their market identities. Second, it attempts to use these shifts to consider more broadly what role exhibition practices played in the shaping of gay men’s experiences within the porn theater itself – a key site of spectatorial, erotic, and social engagement. Shot on 35 mm film, productions such as Deep Throat (1972), Behind the Green Door (1972), The Devil in Miss Jones (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) and Debbie Does Dallas (1978) were widely screened both in the USA and internationally. These films have since been estab- lished as classics (Buscombe 2004: 30) and milestones in both scholarly and popular porn historiographies. While some identify the so-called ‘golden age of porn’ through North American legislation and as ranging from 1957 from 1973 (Lane 2000: 22–3), it was in the 1970s and early 1980s that porn shifted towards the mainstream. In a trend titled by the New York Times as porno chic, pornography became fashionable, gained mainstream publicity and popularity (McNair 2002: 62–3; Schaefer 2004: 371; Wyatt 1999). During the past decade, this golden age has been reminisced in films such as People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Boogie Nights (1997) and Rated X (2000), numerous documentaries – including the critically acclaimed Inside Deep Throat (2005) – and books.1 This body of popular porn historiography depicts the decade as one of quality films with real stories, personal performers and talented directors, in contrast to the 1980s of video distribution, inflation of the porn industry, rise of AIDS and conservative backlash. With notable exceptions such as the French Le pornographe (2001) and the Spanish–Danish co-production Torremolinos 73 (2003), European histories have not been reminisced to the same degree.

Whereas heterosexual pornography has been accompanied by a serious stigma in the "straight" world, gay pornography has been characterized partly by the high esteem in which it is held in the gay male subculture. As a group that is both defined by its sexual activity and rejected by the majority culture for it, gay men have often seen in pornography an all-too-rare positive image of gay sexuality. Similarly, they have found in the exaggerated sexuality and marginal artistry of porn a campy rejection of the hierarchies of the heterosexual majority. As with straight pornography, gay male pornography can be divided into two categories, hardcore and softcore. Hardcore is the genre commonly associated with the term pornography. It includes explicit imagery of actual sexual activity to the point of climax, including visible penetration and ejaculation. Softcore is a less explicit alternative, generally focusing on nude or nearly nude bodies in sexual or sensual situations, but without views of penetration or visible climax. The sex is nearly always simulated in softcore, and it is often filmed with an emphasis on romance or mood. As porn diva Gloria Leonard once humorously proclaimed, "The difference between pornography and erotica is lighting." Because both the production and consumption of pornographic film and video are dependent on relatively high levels of technology, the genre's development has taken place primarily in the industrialized West.

While stopping short of performing sex acts on stage, these plays featured copious nudity, erotic situations, and forthright depictions of gay desire. In the early years of gay liberation, such plays pushed at the boundaries between the “legitimate” theatre and pornography, and in the process created the most exuberant and affirming depictions of same-sex sexuality heretofore seen in the American theatre. Some of these works were extremely popular with gay audiences, but almost all were dismissed by mainstream critics, never published, and rarely revived. The most widely seen of these plays was Tubstrip (1973), written and directed by Jerry Douglas, whose career in the early 1970s was situated squarely at the intersection of legitimate theatre and pornography. An analysis of Tubstrip and its groundbreaking production history can illuminate an important but often overlooked chapter in the development of gay theatre in America.     SEX WISHES AND VIRGIN DREAMS Zebedy Colt’s Reactionary Queer Heterosmut and the Elusive Porn Archive Whitney Strub Midway through The Story of Joanna, a 1975 pornographic film, the decadent aristocrat Jason (Jamie Gillis), having dedicated the film’s first hour to “breaking in” his masochistic new paramour Joanna (Terri Hall), receives a massage from his male butler. As the butler works his back with a tender efficiency, Jason rolls over for a chest rub. Kneading slowly down Jason’s body, the butler smoothly segues into fellatio, as the director Gerard Damiano’s camera records Jason’s penis inflat- ing from flaccidity to erection. The scene ends not in the traditional ejaculatory “money shot” but in a blurring of visual focus that recalls the blurring of sexual boundaries just depicted (fig. 1). That The Story of Joanna presented itself as a heterosexual film is undeni- able; terming it “the most definitive erotic film of our time,” its newspaper adver- tising situated it as such by leaving its status unmarked, in contrast to the gay or bisexual porn films that without fail announced themselves clearly (i.e., Boys in the Sand [1971], Both Ways [1975]). Thus the butler blowjob, when recognized at all, tends to be framed as an anomalous rupture in the monolithic straightness of heterosexual porn. Robert Rimmer (1986: 138), in X- Rated Videotape Guide, calls it “the only homosexual scene that I’ve ever seen in a film for heterosexuals,” while the more scholarly Linda Williams (1989: 220) deems it “quite exceptional in fea- ture length heterosexual pornography .
