Martin, Chair Professor Kerwin Lee Klein Professor Linda Williams Spring 2014 Copyright 2014 by Joseph Lam Duong Abstract California Hard Core by Joseph Lam Duong Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Waldo E. Martin, Chair California Hard Core is a narrative history of the pornographic film industry in California from 1967 to 1978, a moment when Americans openly made, displayed, and watched sexually explicit films. Two interrelated questions animate this project: Who moved the pornographic film from the margins of society to the mainstream of American film culture? What do their stories tell us about sex and sexuality in the U.S. in the last third of the twentieth century? The earlier academic literature concentrates on pornographic film and political debates surrounding it rather than industry participants and their contexts. The popular literature, meanwhile, is composed almost entirely of book-length oral histories and autobiographies of filmmakers and models. California Hard Core helps to close the divide between these two literatures by documenting not only an eye-level view of work from behind the camera, on the set, and in the movie theater, but also the ways in which consumers received pornographic films, placing the reader in the viewing position of audience members, police officers, lawyers, judges, and anti-pornography activists. -

The Golden Age of Porn: Nostalgia and History in Cinema Susanna Paasonen and Laura Saarenmaa
Pornification 19/7/07 10:56 am Page 23 –2– The Golden Age of Porn: Nostalgia and History in Cinema Susanna Paasonen and Laura Saarenmaa The mainstreaming of pornography is indebted to the success of feature-length hardcore films of the 1970s. Shot on 35 mm film, productions such as Deep Throat (1972), Behind the Green Door (1972), The Devil in Miss Jones (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) and Debbie Does Dallas (1978) were widely screened both in the USA and internationally. These films have since been estab- lished as classics (Buscombe 2004: 30) and milestones in both scholarly and popular porn historiographies. While some identify the so-called ‘golden age of porn’ through North American legislation and as ranging from 1957 from 1973 (Lane 2000: 22–3), it was in the 1970s and early 1980s that porn shifted towards the mainstream. In a trend titled by the New York Times as porno chic, pornography became fashionable, gained mainstream publicity and popularity (McNair 2002: 62–3; Schaefer 2004: 371; Wyatt 1999). During the past decade, this golden age has been reminisced in films such as People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Boogie Nights (1997) and Rated X (2000), numerous documentaries – including the critically acclaimed Inside Deep Throat (2005) – and books.1 This body of popular porn historiography depicts the decade as one of quality films with real stories, personal performers and talented directors, in contrast to the 1980s of video distribution, inflation of the porn industry, rise of AIDS and conservative backlash. With notable exceptions such as the French Le pornographe (2001) and the Spanish–Danish co-production Torremolinos 73 (2003), European histories have not been reminisced to the same degree. -
Pornography's Performatistic Screen

Publication Date 2014 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Plotting Sex: Pornography’s Performatistic Screen By Sanjay P Hukku A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Linda Williams, Chair Professor Kristen Whissel Professor Richard Hutson Spring 2014 Plotting Sex: Pornography’s Performatistic Screen © 2014 by Sanjay P Hukku Abstract Plotting Sex: Pornography’s Performatistic Screen by Sanjay P Hukku Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Linda Williams, Chair The early 1970s witnessed the mainstreaming of feature-length, hard core pornography. Though derided by critics, this newly minted genre had two notable features: broader narratives within which sex occurred, and an insistent focus on the visual display of male pleasure. Plotting Sex claims that, by embedding sex within a story, sex itself takes on narrative qualities. To support this claim, it teases out small shifts in the twentieth century’s episteme that collectively contributed to the early 1970s emergence of what it terms pornography’s performatistic screen, or the base, plotted structure of bodily performance and engagement underpinning sexual displays as enacted over time in orgasmically-oriented hard core film. This project starts with the twin Foucaultian poles of law and “human sciences” as represented by the metonyms of American obscenity jurisprudence and sexology, finding in both a late 1960s pivot to issues of social construction and utility as tethered to narrative. -

Many of the 70s porn performers are gone and buried. ODs, suicides and AIDS – which also happen to mainstream performers – it seems like in your business a lot more actors had some really rough, and even deadly, times. So, to what do you owe your longevity and survival? There’re only a handful of Marilyn: [laughs] Probably a little bit of AA names who meet the test of here and there. I also have a teenager who keeps legendary adult film icon: JOHN me real busy. As far as being a survivor over the HOLMES, LINDA LOVELACE, RON years, I didn’t totally over-expose myself, pardon JEREMY, TRACY LORDS, GINGER LYNN, JENNA JAMESON the pun. I didn’t go to the max like a lot of porn performers do, especially, today. When I first and, of course, at the top of that list… MARILYN CHAMBERS. came around, everything was shot on film and it I happen to be a bone-a-fide fan of Marilyn Chambers, having became porno chic. ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES OCTOBER – DECEMBER PRESS LISTINGS OCTOBER 2013 PRESS LISTINGS MIX NYC PRESENTS: Tommy Goetz A BRIDE FOR BRENDA 1969, 62 min, 35mm MIX NYC, the producer of the NY Queer Experimental Film Festival, presents a special screening of sexploitation oddity A BRIDE FOR BRENDA, a lesbian-themed grindhouse cheapie set against the now-tantalizing backdrop of late-60s Manhattan. Shot in Central Park, Times Square, the Village, and elsewhere, A BRIDE FOR BRENDA narrates (quite literally – the story is told via female-voiced omniscient narration rather than dialogue) the experiences of NYC-neophyte Brenda as she moves into an apartment with Millie and Jane. These apparently unremarkable roommates soon prove themselves to be flesh-hungry lesbians, spying on Brenda as she undresses, attempting to seduce her, and making her forget all about her paramour Nick (and his partners in masculinity). As the narrator intones, “Once a young girl has been loved by a lesbian, it’s difficult to feel satisfaction from a man again.” –Thurs, Oct 3 at 7:30. TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry. -

A Monster for Our Times: Reading Sade across the Centuries Matthew Bridge Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Matthew Bridge All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT A Monster for Our Times: Reading Sade across the Centuries Matthew Bridge This doctoral dissertation looks at several readings and interpretations of the works of the Marquis de Sade, from the eighteenth century to the present. Ever since he was imprisoned under the Old Regime following highly publicized instances of physical and sexual abuse, Sade has remained a controversial figure who has been both condemned as a dangerous criminal and celebrated as an icon for artistic freedom. The most enduring aspect of his legacy has been a vast collection of obscene publications, characterized by detailed descriptions of sexual torture and murder, along with philosophical diatribes that offer theoretical justifications for the atrocities. Not surprisingly, Sade’s works have been subject to censorship almost from the beginning, leading to the author’s imprisonment under Napoleon and to the eventual trials of his mid-twentieth-century publishers in France and Japan. The following pages examine the reception of Sade’s works in relation to the legal concept of obscenity, which provides a consistent framework for textual interpretation from the 1790s to the present. I begin with a prelude discussing the 1956 trial of Jean-Jacques Pauvert, in order to situate the remainder of the dissertation within the context of how readers approached a body of work as quintessentially obscene as that of Sade.
