The interview took place in Montrose, Colorado, and was conducted by Richard Doud for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview Side 1 RICHARD DOUD: Mr. Stryker, we were discussing Tugwell and the organization of the FSA Photography Project. Would you care to go into a little detail on what Tugwell had in mind with this thing? ROY STRYKER: First, I think I'll have to raise a certain question about your emphasis on the word "Photography Project." During the course of the morning I gave you a copy of my job description. It might be interesting to refer back to it before we get through. RICHARD DOUD: Very well. ROY STRYKER: I was Chief of the Historical Section, in the Division of Information. My job was to collect documents and materials that might have some bearing, later, on the history of the Farm Security Administration. I don't want to say that photography wasn't conceived and thought of by Mr. Tugwell, because my backround -- as we'll have reason to talk about later -- and my work at Columbia was very heavily involved in the visual. -

The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. Additional excerpts from the 1997 CD-ROM and 1986 exhibition The Celebrative Spirit: 1937-1943 John Collier’s work as a visual anthropologist has roots in his early years growing up in Taos, New Mexico, where his father was head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. His interest in Native Americans of the Southwest would prove to be a source of conflict with his future boss, Roy Stryker, director of the FSA photography project. A westerner from Colorado, Stryker did not consider Indians to be part of the mission of the FSA. Perhaps he worried about perceived encroachment by the FSA on BIA turf. Whatever the reason, the rancor of his complaints when Collier insisted on spending a few extra weeks in the West photographing native villages indicates Stryker may have harbored at least a smattering of the old western anti-Indian attitude. By contrast, Collier’s work with Mexican Americans was a welcome and encouraged addition to the FSA file. -

What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I might have prepared it at home anyway, but just know- ing that I am prohibited from doing it in my federally funded Smithsonian office Symposia Reports (currently a cubicle) represents a burr in my figurative saddle. The Smithsonian pp. 5-8 Institution is a bit unusual in its mix of federal and private funding, so there are some organizations which are not affected directly, such as one office whose staff Articles pp. 9-12 is composed entirely of trust fund employees, working in a non-federal building: it’s business as usual for them. The FSA Photographs: Information, Or Propaganda?
From the Writer My essay was inspired by discussions in my WR 150 section about an article by Michael Carlebach in which he argued, as I later would, that the FSA photographs were both propaganda and legitimate political communication. As we discussed Carlebach's thesis, two things struck me: first, that the question depended largely on what propaganda is to begin with, and second, that this was more something to decide (within reasonable bounds) than to discover. I consulted a couple of dictionaries and used the information therein to form a working definition that I thought conformed to the word’s everyday use and provided clear conditions for its satisfaction. Another question emerged from the fact that my definition contained words like “information” and “deceptive,” which are associated with saying things, whereas an image cannot literally say anything. I set out to determine how photographs communicate information, and under what conditions they can be considered propaganda. Then it remained to use historical evidence to show whether the FSA photographs met these conditions; this was the step that required the most actual research. By carefully analyzing the main points of my argument, I was able to ensure that I made a convincing case, and that my essay would have a coher- ent structure (since I simply had to address each issue in turn). Finally, I was enormously helped by the mandatory first draft, which forced me to think about, research, and begin writing my essay early, counteracting my strong tendencies toward laziness and procrastination and helping me produce a complete essay on time.
