ADDITIONS TO WAIPARA SCHOOL Two new hens, as yet unnamed, have made their home in our chicken coop. They are laying at least one egg a day so each family can be expecting to have a half a dozen eggs come home to share as a family. It is wonderful to have hens in our environs again!

TECHNOLOGY FOR YEARS SEVEN AND EIGHT AT HURUNUI COLLEGE FOR TERMS TWO, THREE AND FOUR This commences on Monday 29 April. Children will be transported to Hurunui College by bus, leaving at 9.10am and returning to school by 1pm. Mrs. Duncan will be accompanying the children for these classes but Mrs Willis is accompanying them today. I have included an overview of the Technology programme for parents’ information. SPORT NZ RURAL TRAVEL FUND Recently, an application was made to the Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund to seek funding to assist parents with transport costs making their way to Rangiora and return, each Friday night for basketball. Our application was successful, so basketball families will be receiving petrol vouchers as a thank you for enabling the children to play the game.

Waipara Futures

Who is it? Waipara Futures is a collaboration between a number of local groups including the Waipara Fire Brigade, Waipara School, Waipara District Residents Association, Waipara Valley Promotions Association, Glenmark Lions, and the Waipara Valley Winegrowers. Seed funding for the Waipara Futures initiative came from the Kate Valley Landfill Community Trust. What is it? Waipara Futures has been formed to find ways to improve the capability and outcomes for our people and our community. To ensure the sustainability and long-term future of the community. How does it work? Waipara Futures will endeavour to provide applicants with appropriate mentoring, the breadth of the trustees’ personal networks and exposure to opportunities not otherwise available to applicants, as well as potential monetary funding. Who can apply? Anyone! This isn’t limited to students or young people. Examples of possible applicants might be someone looking to retrain after decades in one job, a student or young person looking to further their education or training or someone looking for advice and support to set up a new business. The grant committee will look at all applications. Waipara Future Trust Aim We provide resources, opportunities, skilled people and safe environments, which help to foster confidence and develop our people and our community. By resourcing the community in this way, we believe that we can help, over time, improve the capabilities and outcomes for our people and, by extension, our community.

Applications will close on August 31st. Any Waipara resident can apply for funding or mentorship by writing a letter setting out their aims and objectives and posting it to:

SEESAW Waipara School staff are going to have another crack at getting Seesaw – a digital portfolio app – integrated into our classroom learning programmes to showcase children’s work, strengthen home/ school connections and to educate children about digital citizenship in authentic ways. When there are new Seesaw posts, families can be notified by app notification or email. Parents are notified only about their children’s work and all information is safe and secure. You will have been given the sign in details at parent / teacher interviews at the end of last term or your children will come home with a document advising you of how to get on board. Please take the time to do this. We would like all parents to join us for this Seesaw journey. Please contact me should you have any questions. ALiM BEING OFFERED TO ACCELERATE LEARNING IN NUMERACY AGAIN THIS YEAR Once again, the Ministry of Education has given our school funding to employ Viv Belcher to come into our classrooms and work with children in mathematics. Viv will work alongside classroom teachers, supporting them in their work and work with small groups of children for targeted learning in mathematical concepts. Children’s learning has always received a boost with this programme being offered. This will commence on 09 May.

THREE NEW ENTRANTS TO OUR SCHOOL J Today, we welcome three five year olds into Harakeke!! Marco Simonetta lives with his parents, Kirsty and Amos and little brother Luka in Glenmark Drive. William Hoban, youngest child of Maria and James of Mt Cass Road joins the class and will be coming to school with his big sister, Alice, along with Hannah Kuznetsov, middle child of Natasha and Fadey and little brother Joseph. Hannah will join her big sister Arina in Harakeke. Welcome to our school! It is great having you on board.

I have sent a cheque for $250 from our school to the Abdelmonem Family, who live in . This was the money we raised on our Colour Day held recently.

NZ PLAYHOUSE PRODUCTION On Thursday this week, the whole school will be travelling on the Amberley Community bus to the Omihi Hall to watch a NZ Playhouse performance of The Hare and the Tortoise. The show starts at 9.30am so we will need to leave school as soon as possible after 9am. The cost per child is $7 and this will be deducted from Activity Contributions. EXTENSION TO THE SCHOOL BUS ROUTE The Ministry of Education has granted an extension to our bus route and will now pick up families who live in Darnley Road. The bus will pick up and drop off those accessing the Glenmark Drive bus first and then pick up and drop off the Darnley Road children second. We are all at risk of online and offline fraud, and need to feel confident in recognising and dealing with it. If you do suspect a scam, how might you alert others, and should you report it? Satisfy Food Rescue and Reducing Food Waste, Thursday 9th May, 7pm to 8.30pm Satisfy Food Rescue collaborates with food retailers and community organisations to re-direct surplus perishable food to people in North Canterbury who need it. Phillipa Hunt, chair of Satisfy, will tell how it started in Kaiapoi five years ago and how it works to reduce food waste and make good food available to everyone. She’ll also give us tips about avoiding wastage at home and in workplaces.
