September 25, 1989 ! Dear Friends,

By this time you may have already heard about the national boycott of Domino's Pizza. The boycott was first announced in January, 1989 by the National Organization for Women (NOW) in response to Domino's support for the anti-choice movement. Five months later the Coalition to Boycott Domino's Pizza formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan (the home of Domino's world headquarters) and joined with NOW in calling for a boycott. The coalition is comprised of women's, housing, labor, Latin American solidarity, and peace and justice groups, and local environmentalists. These constituencies came together in response to the use of Domino's profits to further the right-wing political agenda of Domino's owner and sole stockholder, Thomas Monaghan.

Recently, Monaghan has publicly acknowledged he is contemplating selling Domino's Pizza. While it appears this could be a success for the coalition, we will continue the boycott until the policies of Domino's Pizza change.

Enclosed is information on the boycott .. Please share this information and write to us if you would like more literature.

We appreciate your time and consideration.

In solidarity,

%.e Coalition to 'Boycott i})omino 's Pizza Update: Monaghan announces plans to sell, acknowledges boycott's impact

October 3, 1989

The Coalition to Boycott Domino's Pizza will continue its boycott of Domino's Pizza and increase boycott activities on the national level. The Coalition is committed to responsible use of I corpOrate profits as well as reducing injury and damage resulting from corporate practices. Clear1y, the announcement by current owner Thomas Monaghan that he will sell his interest in Domino's Pizza demonostrates the accomplishments of the Coalition in terms of forcing the Domino's corporation tQ analyze and change its public image._ Both Monaghan and Domino's franchise owners publically have acknowledged that the national boycott has hurt the corporation. Monaghan has acknowledged that his is a factor in his considering to sell his interest in the corporation. But the goal of the Coalition to Boycott Domino's Pizza is not only to stop Monaghan but also the corporation. In fact, Monagnan has said that he wants to sell so that he can devote more time and money to his "philanthropic" activities. The sale will also allow Monaghan to extract as much money as possible from the corporation before the boycott further reduces its profitability. Nationally, the coalition must let potential buyers know that boycott activities will not stop simply because Monaghan is gone, but that there must be significant corporate reform as well. The Struggle Continues! For Immediate Release October 12, 1989 . The Coalition to Boycott Domino's Pizza, a coalition of women's, pro-choice, l environmental, labor, Latin American support, community, and religious groups will continue its boycott of Domino's Pizza and increase boycott activities on the national level. The Coalition is committed to responsible use of corporate profits as well as reducing injury and damage resulting from corporate practices. Clearly, the announcement by current owner Thomas Monaghan that he will sell his interest in Domino's Pizza demonostrates the accomplishments of the Coalition in terms of forcing the Domino's corporation to analyze and change its public image. · · However, the Coalition does not look upon the potential sale of Domino's Pizza by its current owner, Thomas Monaghan, as reason to end the boycott. Monaghan has used his profits to promote irresponsible development, limit women's reproductive freedom, break unions, and move Tiger's Stadium. The Coalition applauds and takes credit for his decision to distance himself from the corporation. However, limits upon personal freedom of choice, anti-union practices, unsafe working conditions and irresponsible development are inherrent within the current corporate practices. It is unclear that a change in ownership will result in a change in these corporate practices. Nationally, the coalition is letting potential buyers know that boycott activities will not stop simply because Monaghan is gone, but that there must be significant corporate reform as well. The Coalition is committed to continuing the Boycott of Domino's until the corporation stops these practices. There will be a press conference to discuss the future plans of the Coalition to Boycott Domino's Pizza on Thursday. October 19 at llam at the Mjchjgan Unjon. · Representatives of several organizations will be present; including the National Organization for Wome_n._(NOW), _ l..b~. The Coalition lists numerous reasons for its boycott, ranging from saving Tiger Stadium to stopping Domino's funding of the anti-choice movement. The Coalition's concerns are rooted in how Domino's profits are used by Thomas Monaghan, iounder and sole stockholder of Domino's Pizza. Being sole stockholder means that Monaghan profits from every pizza sold. July 19, 1989 •no.ino'a Doean't Deliver" Campaign: Update Following the January 13, 1989, resolution of the National Now Board to boycott Domino's Pi.zza, NOW chapters and other pro-choice gro~ps around the u.s. have taken action. In Madison, Wisconsin, feminists demonstrated in front of a local Domino's franchise. In Chicago, Students for Choice have distributed boycott fliers. New Orleans NOW held a press conference to publicize their local boycott. In Detroit, Channel 7 Action News aired an interview on March 8 with Ann Arbor-Washtenaw NOW Chapter President Jan BenDer.

In Washington, North Carolina, New Haveri and Penn~;~ylvania, etudent groups planned to leaflet in support of the boycott. In Minneapolis, feminists publicized the action with, "Buy pizza in a Domino's Box, Put a woman in a Pine Box.• Michigan NOW's State Conference agenda for May 20 included a march and demonstration at the Domino's outlet across from Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Chants included, "Hey,hey,ho,ho, Domino's p~ofits have got to go,• and "Down with Domino's, Down with Coors, they use their profits to hurt the poor.• At the National March on Washington, April 9, Michigan NOW distributed 10,000 fliers titled, "Domino's Discriminates.• Sheri O'Dell, NOW National Action Vice President, said, "Part of the agenda of the March is to publiciz·e these white men of privilege who are really the leaders of the anti-abortion zealots. We are asking our members to do informational pickets at Domino's Pizza because Tom Monaghan, owner of the company and of the Detroit Tigers, contributed at least $100,000 to defeat medicaid funding for abortions for poor women. We intend to let the public know what the Tom Monaghan& of this world are doing with the profits they make from their.businesses.• In July, Michigan groups formed the Coalition.to Boycott Domino's Pizza, with headquarters at 4120 Michigan Union, Ann Arbor, 48109 (313~665~8438). The co~lition held ·a well-attended demQnstration at the road entrance to Domino's Farms (sic) 1 ··the headquarters complex, and a delegation presented seven demands to Domino's Management. Member groups· are distributing a flier, buttons, and bumper stickers. This pizza is bad for your civil rights The profits from sales of Domino's pizza are supporting a single owner whose actions--both personal and "corporate"--go directly against the civil rights of Americans. The Ann Arbor Washtenaw Chapter of NOW was forced to file a complaint on the basis of religious discrimination after Domino's Farms (Headquarters) cancelled NOW's pro-choice fundraiser scheduled in the company's public facility for group parties. Domino's officials stated that the cancellation was explicitly due to •Mr. Monaghan's religious beliefs against abortion.• According to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, four other complaints are pending at the State level against Domino's Bizza: three are employment complaints and one is 4 public accommodation complaint. All the complaints are based on race; one is also based on color. We have heard many informal reporta of incidents invqlving race, sex, 4nd religious discrimination. In addition, ~hete is at least one pending lawsuit in which the Michigan ACLU has taken the case of an employee forced to cut his hair. Monaghan's wealth and corporate resources are clearly going toward ant~-civil rights causes~-particularly the anti-choice movement. According to the July 16; 1989, Detroit Free Presg, Domino's has authorized its Operations Director, Peter'Thomason, to spend any. amount ·of paid work time to stand in front of the Ann Arbor Planned Parenthood Clinic as an Operation Rescue picket. ' In mid-1988 Monaghan contributed $50,000 to the referendum ballot committee- •To End TaX-funded Abortions•--that resulted in the denial of reproductive rights to poor women in Michigan; on television he promised another $50,000 of his personal money, and his corporate found4~ion contributed another $10,000. ·. · At the same time, the Domino's world headquarters facilities were donated for frequent and well publicized fundraisers for Right to ~ife and for right wing political candidates. The Fund for A Feminist Majority h4s ordered the entire campaign contribution file in order to investigate possible election law violations, and to identity the anti-choice contributors associated with Monaghan. No Women MAy Apply At a Domino's corporate conference, executives were asked why there are no women on the •executive team.• A personnel manager under Dave Black, then Monaghan's t2 executive, said, •we used to, but there were too many complaints from their(sic) men.• On the Way to Empire ,, ' ... • 0 'A 0 ' • The rapid expansion of the Domino' 6 headquart'ers in Alln· Arbor' township (at the junction of u.s. 23 and M14 northeast of Ann Arbor) has proceeded in spite of numerous protests by neighbors, and in apparent violation of the local land use ordinance. The office zoning is ~launted by the constant schedule of public relations events (antique car shows etc.), ~petting zoo, and the visitor center with its party facilities. · In response to the neighborhood group's public outcry, Monaghan said, •It doesn't matter what the neighbors think--in ten years I I 11 OWN THEM •• Domino's Farms(sic)--the corporate headquarters--has bought up surrounding homes from elderly people, many of them widows who have lived in the area all their lives. A number of the women have told of how Domino's lawyers harassed them almost daily to get them to agree to sell. Then they were not offered money but ~r~des of land or estate trusts. Monaghan continues to buy up land and businesses in the area, under the •TsM,Inc.• real estate company: the local Marriott (where many corporate meetings take place) a large tract planned for $1 million homes; land for a new baseball stadium; a field designed for cable TV links, and a shopping center, •westminster Square.• One OPI reporter has suggested that Monaghan's ultimate design will be a Disney World type of empire, exempt from state laws on environment, building, and civil rights. Reports from students at campuses in North Carolina and Pennsylvania suggest that Monaghan is combining business forces with J.W. Marriott, Jr., another extreme right winger who heads Marr.iott Hotel Corporation with 1,88 .hot;,el~ an.d resorts.and campus food services. Anti-union

Monaghan has stated that •unions are th~ cause of the federal deficit,• and Domino's has employed every techni~e to prevent the formation of unions among its employees. Organizers are rapidly pushed out. By company policy, employees can be harassed at any time by mandatory drug testing and dress cod,s. However, building Domino's pizza outlets with non-union labor has run the company into trouble. In Granite City, Illinois, construction trades unions have initiated a boycott. In Michigan, individual OAW workers have urged a similar action based on the company's purchase of large fleets of foreign-made trucks for delive~ of pizzas. A yengeful fanatic Tom Monaghan's personal story reveals a fanatical man who will only become more socially dangerous as he controls more wealth. According to.a.Free Press article, Tom Monaghan now believes that he lives -.in a state of grace with God. The name of the company, •Domi~Q's,• has a Latin root •of God,• from the early term for the hood:worn by Catholic monks. (The original company name was · •Dominick's,• never Dominoes, the correct spelling of the game implied by the logo. Later name changes were mandated by the settl~ent of a lawsuit by Domino Sugar.)

The corporation's~headquarters staff is •dominated• by members of the Word of God cult. Headed by Ralph Martin, and centered in Ann Arbor, the Word of God organization is estimated at 20,000 members nationally. They met in Ann Arbor in the summer of '87 with some ten thous,nd in attendance. Recruiting persons from other Christian· backgrounds· as well as Catholic, the cult believes that ; women are •handmaidens of men,• forces arranged marriages, and supports a school in Honduras believed to shelter the Contras. Word of God's Puebla Institute in Ann Arbor is headed by a man who reportedly was Nicaraguan dictator Somoza's former editor of ~ Pren;a. (These connections are documented in detail in articles by Russ Bellant published in the November, 18, 1988., National Catholic Reporter, and the November 19,1989, New York Times.) The cult also supports a media company, a food co-op, the University of Stuebenville in Ohio (Monaghan is on its Board) and other foundations and corporations. The elite level of Word of God is the Legatus group, •ambassadors of ~hrist,• made up of bishops and CEOS of companies grossing over $4 million. Meeting in Washington on April 26, 1989, to pray for the overturn of Roe v. Wade, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Legatus was addressed by President Bush, Henry Hyde, E~izabeth Dole, and th• Vatican's ambassador to the u.s., Archbishop Pio Laghi.

N.O.W.'s ~urrent inquiry attempts to doc~ent the roles of Monaghan, Legatus, and Word of God in providing funds for anti choice terrorism:· Word of God runs the Washtenaw County version of Operation Rescue, and Monaghan gave word of God $100,000. Approximately half of the O.R. members arrested in attacks on three Washtenaw clinics in March and April have been identified as WOG, including the head of w.R., Peter Thomason, who is ~loyed by Domino's Services Corporation. Monaghan has tried to depict himself as a self-made man who has overcome an ophaned childhood to succeed. However, according to long time neighbors, his mother was a single parent struggling to support two children and earn a nursing degree. According to ·f~ly friends, young Tom was so ~usive to her that in desperation she temporarily placed him in foster care. · · Ironically, parochial schools and organizations which serve homeless children, or teen mothers, have had little luck convincing Monaghan to contribute money. His charitable contributions have followed an identifiable theme: maximum media play and identification with celebrities. Fair to the local pizza owners? we Afe asking franchise owners to take o responsible posture agatnst the use of Domino's profit& for ·right wing, anti-American causes. Those who pledge to withold their franchise royalties in escrow deserve recognition. Their public pressure on Monaghan might force a cessation of his projects. In his own magazine, the Fencepost, Monaghan wrote that he •regretted• the unforeseen effect on the franchisees, but went on to boast of his anti-choice support. To local owners who refuse to act, we can only say, •if you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.• Due to the fall-off in sales of Domino's franchises, most future outlets will be directly owned, so sympathy for t~ose having lo~al •franchise control• may be misplaced.· Your community may in fact be host to a directly owned corporate outlet.
