  • Faith and Secularisation in Religious Colleges and Universities
Faith and Secularisation in Religious Colleges and Universities There are almost 2,000 religious higher education institutions worldwide, 250 of which are in Europe. Faith and Secularisation in Religious Colleges and Universities is the first book to offer a comparative study of these institutions across many religions and countries including Christian, Islamic and Jewish universities in areas including the US, Europe and the Middle East. Considering the current tensions and debates surrounding academic free- dom, institutional governance, educational policy, mission and identity, this innovative and challenging book explores: • institutions’ relations with the state and their wider communities • whether such institutions can be both religious and ‘universities’ • the appropriate role of religious faith within colleges and universities • academic autonomy and the role of religion in education Faith and Secularisation in Religious Colleges and Universities offers some important ideas on how such institutions can be part of diversity and plural- ism yet remain committed in a holistic and coherent way to their religious traditions. It will appeal to readers involved in higher education studies, religious study and the history of education, as well as individuals within religious institutions. James Arthur is Professor of Education at Canterbury Christ Church Uni- versity. He completed his doctorate at Oriel College in the University of Oxford and has written widely on the relationship between theory and practice in education. Faith and Secularisation

Launched a decade ago in Ypsilanti, Michigan as Ave Maria College by its founder, Chancellor Thomas S. This new and evolving collegiate institution was to offer baccalaureate and graduate degrees in a broad spectrum of disciplines, feature pre-professional and professional specializations, focus on teaching and research, and faithfully serve the Magisterium of the Church. Today, Ave Maria University features small classes, is academically rigorous, and provides students with the tools they need to become critical thinkers, competent writers, and lovers of learning. These initiatives are the responsibility of a well-qualified and dedicated faculty, 94 percent of whom possess earned doctorates in their chosen academic disciplines. South Dakota voters defeated a law passed previously by the state legislature that would have prohibited abortion in most forms. Meanwhile, voters in California and Oregon rejected measures that would have required a waiting period and parental notification prior to a minor receiving an abortion. The measures reflect the actions by abortion opponents to strip abortion rights gradually on both the federal and state levels, while also attempting to outlaw abortion procedures completely.1 These actions have put abortion-rights advocates on the defensive against the momentum created by anti-abortion victories,2 causing advocates to pour money into thwarting any threat to abortion rights. The 2005 and 2006 abortion measure battles in the three states attracted nearly $28 million in contributions. Opponents of the measures raised nearly $18 million, or 78 percent more than the $10 million raised by proponents.

However, a population of organizations with a religious mission or identity has developed that exists outside of these traditional structures. Many of these organizations have more resources than many denominations, but have received little attention theoretically or empirically. The following chapters rely on original data for over 1,900 hundred of the largest Christian nonprofits based in the United States. Drawing upon theory in the study of organizations, social movements and religion I address three underlying research questions. First, when and why did these organizations rise? While adjectives such as “new” or “proliferating” are often used when talking about religious non-profit

Introduction squinting to see him another generation sent to right field -David Giacalone1 In the hands of a child, a ticket to a professional baseball game carries magical powers, and it has been this way for generations. To children, local sports stadiums are hallowed ground where heroes perform. These magnificent structures create an aura and are unique to the community. More so than football, basketball, or hockey, baseball has played a greater role in the nation‘s history and culture than any other sport. While the game‘s roots stretch back centuries, professional baseball first became nationally popular in the late 19th century. The historic parks and stadiums in which early teams played have all too often been bulldozed to make way for new stadiums. Detroit‘s Tiger Stadium, aged nearly 100 years, was a rare, precious legacy from baseball‘s early era. But Tiger Stadium‘s history should not be reduced simply to one of sport.
