TRADE FALLS BACK TO EARTH After a memorable Tattersalls February Sale 12 months ago, it was back to chilly- fare when the company threw off its dust covers for the latest renewal of the event in Newmarket yesterday. The figures tumbled by alarming percentages, although there was no shortage of buyers, particularly those looking for a cheap horse for export. The difference lay in the upper reaches. Twelve months ago, this two-day event included a parade of gems, including the three-year-old Willie John who made 1,900,000gns during the second session to a bid from Newmarket Lot 67, All I Need (), topped the first day of trainer . The price was a European record for a colt in the Tattersalls February Sale when selling to Oakgrove Stud training. There was also the mare Thetis, the final piece in the for 55,000gns. © Tattersalls Ballymacoll Stud dispersal, and in this auction with her very 2019BACK IN HIGH-CLASS JUVENILE AND SPRINTER BY FEE KUROSHIO €6 EXCEED AND EXCEL ,000 22% Black-type horses to runners in 2018 from a limited first crop of 2yos inc: Dunkerron 2nd Gr.2 Qatar , 4th Gr.2 Arqana Daphinia 2nd L Marygate Stakes Kurious 4th L “” Fillies’ Stakes Plus winners Big Ace, Kapona, Moongazer & Special Stars Same number of black-type horses in Europe in 2018 as first seaon sires Bungle Inthejungle, Charm Spirit, etc., and a higher percentage of winners/runners in GB/IRE than , Australia, etc.

young filly foal because the December Sale took place too close to her foaling date. She sold for 550,000gns on the opening day. Other specialities, rarely seen at a winter mixed sale, included four fillies who were on offer as part of the dismantling of Markus Jooste’s racing assets, and who put nearly 1.8m gns on to the first day’s takings. Deprived of such high-profile lots, yesterday’s turnover was certain to do a u-turn and did not let forecasters down. It fell 77 per cent to 925,700gns, the average price dropped 74 per cent to 7,121gns, while the median was cut in half to a figure of 2,750gns. Eighteen fewer horses were offered and, on a good note, the clearance rate held more or less steady, dipping one point to a Gr.1 figure of 75 per cent. Winner It can be assumed these forgettable figures had nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with the ‘Law of Sod’, which puts so many prized assets into a catalogue one year and offers nothing 12 months later, but if the industry was hoping Europe’s ZELZAL biggest bloodstock sales company might provide an antidote to € 8.000 LF Backstop/Brexit gloom, it will have been disappointed. → THE FASTEST PRIX JEAN PRAT GR.1 Trading on day two of the sale commences at 10am this WINNER - EVER morning. → TRACK RECORD holder over the mile at FAMILIAR FACE FOR OAKGROVE → From the Sea The Stars x x Sadler’s Wells cross The seven-year-old mare All I Need (Lot 67) was on the short list of horses noted by David Hilton, manager of John Deer’s Oakgrove Stud, and he duly netted her with a bid of 55,000gns. That was enough to head trade on the day, but was not the lowest top-price for a session at the February Sale, which stands THE FASTEST SONS at 47,000gns, given for a colt in the post-crash year of 2009. OF SEA THE STARS Yesterday’s high was a daughter of Peintre Celebre with a Pedro The Great cover and consigned by Voute Sales. All I Need was unraced, but, as a half-sister to the Gr.3 winner Aquamarine and the Listed-placed African Sky, and out of a mare from a black-type-producing family, she had plenty of paddock appeal. That appeal to Hilton lay partly in his knowledge of the mare Altesse Imperiale, a winning half-sister to All I Need’s dam, yet whose achievements, including the production of four winners, could not get on to the congested catalogue page. Hilton said: “We have Altesse Imperiale at home and she has bred four winners, three of them black-type horses, including Altruistic, who finished third in the [Gr.1] Racing Post Trophy [now Gr.1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes]. It is a very active family and she Winner suits us physically.” SNAZZY FILLY FOR FLANAGAN David Cox of Baroda Stud was another bidder to secure a well- bred filly, but his offer of 52,000gns for Snazzy (Lot 159) was M E K€ 5.000 H TA LF A L made on behalf of Mick Flanagan, well-known as a buyer for China Horse Club. → WINNER OF THE PRIX D’ISPAHAN GR.1, Cox said: “Mick rang me and asked me to bid for him and I believe defeating Gr.1 winners Robin Of Navan and Zarak the filly is for him [not China Horse Club]. After several unsuccessful attempts he secured, late in the session, Unwanted Beauty (Lot 214), a three-year-old from Ismail Mohammed’s stable. The daughter of Iffraaj remained a maiden after five runs, but had been competitive on each occasion. Buick, who paid 12,000gns to secure the filly, had said earlier that he was looking for sound horses with good bone that would be suitable for the dirt training grounds common in Scandinavia. Of Unwanted Beauty he said: “I’ve bought her to go into training with Annike Bye-Hansen. Being by Iffraaj is a plus and she’s a very tough filly, but the has got hold of her. Much of the racing in Scandinavia is on dirt, but she’s got a bit of a page and could run on turf or dirt.”

NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK

RELIABLE MAN COLT STARS AS BOOK TWO STARTS In relative terms one could have held a mirror up to the Book One results and come up with the same figures for yesterday’s first session of Book Two at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 93rd National Sales Series, writes Glen Latham. Across the board, the key indicators were down against the overall 2018 numbers, the exception being the top-priced lot. But like the four-day Book One sale, vendors are not bemoaning the significant drops, seemingly having prepared for the worst. Last year was the first Book Two sale conducted under NZB’s revamped format which saw a number of traditional second tier horses sell in Book One, a policy considered successful enough to be continued here. Back then the average came in at NZ$47,410 with a 74 per cent clearance rate and a median of NZ$40,000. By Offered as Lot 872 by Westbury Stud, this son of comparison, yesterday the 127 lots sold averaged NZ$39,815 for Reliable Man sold for NZ$270,000 to B L Jenkins, a median of NZ$30,000 and a clearance rate of just 70 per cent. to top the opening day of the Book 2 yearling sale. © NZB But when walking the barns there appears to be an almost universal understanding such a slide was coming. The one indicator that did leap yesterday was the price for the top lot, up from NZ$200,000 to NZ$270,000, although that still figure to secure Lot 872, a bay colt by the Gr.1 came in well behind the record NZ$525,000 achieved at the winner Reliable Man out of the unraced Elusive Quality mare equivalent Select Sale in 2015. Quality Dream. Trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, Hypnos placed third in the Listed Bonecrusher Stakes at Ellerslie before ploughing through a heavy track to win the Listed Uncle Remus Stakes on Boxing Day. Then given a chance in the Gr.1 Levin Classic, he beat all but star colt Maddison County (Pins) when dead-heating for second. , he knocked a joint when disappointing in Saturday’s rich Karaka 3YO Million Professional Pedigree Consultancy behind Long Leaf (Fastnet Rock). This is the sixth foal of Quality Dream, whose dam Dreamworks () won the Gr.2 Royal Stakes at Ellerslie, while her dam Slanchyvah (Kaapstad) won a Listed race at Doomben in Special Offer to Breeders Brisbane and was Gr.1-placed in both the Championship Stakes and New Zealand Oaks. This is the family of the tough-as-teak for the 2019 Breeding Season stayer Grey Song (Unbridled’s Song). The early New Zealand-conceived crops of Reliable Man showed plenty of promise but have yet to truly deliver, hence generally his progeny this week have been available at reasonable FREE Pedigree Consultancy prices. This Westbury Stud-offered colt is definitely the exception for ONE Mare per client to the rule and after signing for the horse Jenkins explained he will most likely return to this ring in November as a breeze-up and a 50% discount horse. for any subsequent mares A trio of colts shared second spot on the day’s trading at NZ$160,000, the first through the ring being Lot 755, another product of the Gerry Harvey-owned Westbury Stud. Sandown, 3rd February 1996

SENOR EL BETRUTTI (Graham Bradley) wins The Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase This week’s big race over the jumps is the Gr.1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown, run over 2m4f. It was first run in 1964 and for over 20 years was run as a 2m contest, won by some evocative names including Buona Notte, Aurelius, Royal Relief, Killiney, Beacon Light and Sandown specialist Kilbrittain Castle. Since being run over a longer trip, the race has been won by Bradbury Star, Young Hustler and perhaps it’s greatest winner, Best Mate. One of the more popular chasers of the late 90s was Senor El Betrutti. A front-running grey son of Roselier with a charismatic name, he hailed from the small stable of his owner, trainer, and breeders Gerard and Susan Nock and soon built up a following amongst National Hunt fans. He sprang to prominence with a 66/1 victory in the Gr.2 Noel Novices’ Chase at Ascot in December 1995 and was afforded much more respect when contesting the Gr.1 Scilly Isles six weeks later. Starting at 11/2 under regular rider Graham Bradley, the seven-year-old Senor El Betrutti was never seriously challenged to beat Campeche Bay and Jibber The Kibber for the £21,556 first prize. The Scilly Isles victory, in the purest terms, was Senor El Betrutti’s biggest win but he also achieved a rare double in late 1997. Showing all the dash and verve that made him so popular, he took both the Murphy’s Gold Cup (now BetVictor) and Tripleprint Gold Cup (now Caspian Caviar) at Cheltenham. Senor El Betrutti won nine races in a career that ran from 1994-2001 and died at the age of 20 in 2009.
