Since Bingham’s effort of many ant collectors as well as Fauna of 1903, ant taxonomy has undergone major myrmecologists who have published on the taxonomy changes in terms of synonymies, discovery of new of Indian ants and from inputs provided by taxa, shuffling of taxa etc. This has lead to chaotic myrmecologists from other parts of world. E-mail: [email protected] Received: 16 February 2009; Accepted: 10 August 2009 ABSTRACT.– The species diversity of ants in three different land use types: a mixed deciduous forest, and a derived commercial teak plantation and a durian orchard, were studied to determine and compare the ant species diversity in these areas. Five sampling methods: handling capture over constant time, sugar-protein bait trap, pitfall trap, leaf litter sifting and soil sifting, were conducted each month from September 2007 to September 2008, inclusive. The species richness of ants in the area was 62 identified species and 67 morpho- species, belonging to 49 genera in nine subfamilies. The Shannon-Wiener’s species diversity index indicated that the diversity was the highest in the mixed deciduous forest (2.387), followed by the durian orchard (1.997) and lastly the teak plantation (1.463). The β-diversity, using Sorensen’s similarity coefficient to determine the similarity in community composition, was highest between the forest and the teak plantation at 65.5%, and then between the teak plantation and the durian orchard at 45.5%, and between the forest and the durian orchard at 39.7%, indicating that both ant species diversity and community composition were distinctly varied in these three sites which may relate to their different land use types. -

Macau is a small territory in South East China and one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Previous studies on insect groups have shown that a relatively diverse, yet specific, fauna could still survive in this region. However, to this point, studies on the myrmecofauna of Macau are scarce and to date no species checklist exists. Here, we present the first checklist of Macanese ant species by combining results from recent ant surveys using hand- collections and Winkler extractors with published records. During the surveys, 82 species and morphospecies belonging to 37 genera and 8 subfamilies have been collected, with 37 species representing new records for Macau, including an interesting new record of an undescribed Leptanilla species, the second record of the Leptanillinae subfamily for South East China. To date, Macanese ants comprise 105 species/morphospecies and 8 subspecies, after the removal of dubious records present in the literature (though some misidentifications may remain). While still likely incomplete, these results represent the most comprehensive list of ants for Macau, and a baseline for future research on ant diversity in heavily urbanized environments and for understanding the potential consequences of urbanization on native and non-native diversity in Asia. -

The 10 painfulness of stings delivered by ants, wasps, and bees can be easily measured in the field or lab using the 11 stinging insect pain scale that rates the pain intensity from 1 to 4, with 1 being minor pain, and 4 being extreme, 12 debilitating, excruciating pain. The painfulness of stings of 96 species of stinging insects and the lethalities of 13 the venoms of 90 species was determined and utilized for pinpointing future promising directions for 14 investigating venoms having pharmaceutically active principles that could benefit humanity. The findings 15 suggest several under- or unexplored insect venoms worthy of future investigations, including: those that have 16 exceedingly painful venoms, yet with extremely low lethality – tarantula hawk wasps (Pepsis) and velvet ants 17 (Mutillidae); those that have extremely lethal venoms, yet induce very little pain – the ants, Daceton and 18 Tetraponera; and those that have venomous stings and are both painful and lethal – the ants Pogonomyrmex, 19 Paraponera, Myrmecia, Neoponera, and the social wasps Synoeca, Agelaia, and Brachygastra. -

However, little is known about the giant nest architecture of this ant. In this study, we investigated the architecture of three A. capiguara nests from a fragment of Cerrado in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Casts were made of the nests by filling them with cement to permit better visualization of internal structures such as chambers and tunnels. After excavation, the depth and dimensions (length, width, and height) of the chambers were measured. The results showed the shape of Atta capiguara nests consisting of mounds of loose soil with unique features resembling a conic section. The fungus chambers were found distant from the mound of loose soil and were spaced apart and distributed laterally at the soil profile. -

In this study we investigate variation in species density, species richness, abundance and functional-groups composition along an elevational gradient in Jammu-Kashmir Himalaya. We tested the hypotheses that (1) species richness and abundance decrease with increase in elevation with respect to temperature change, and (2) assemblage composition changes with an increase in elevation with respect to functional-group composition. We employed different sampling methods like pitfall traps, leaf-litter sifting, stick beating, soil cores, honey baits and hand picking to sample ants. Among the 144 species collected, the first two elevations (500 and 1000 m) were dominated by Indo-Malayan elements, while above 2000 m assemblages were dominated by Palaearctic elements. We observed that ant species richness increased with an initial increase in elevation, peaked at mid-elevation and thereafter decreased, thus forming a mid-elevation peak. The pattern observed could be attributed to the optimal climatic conditions present at mid-altitude. While seven functional groups of ants were collected at the lowest altitude, only three functional groups were detected at the highest altitude, namely “General Myrmicinae”, “Opportunists” and “Cold-climate Specialists”. -
Diversity in Dry Dipterocarp and Mixed-Deciduous Forests at Sri Nan National Park, Northern Thailand

E-mail: [email protected] Received: 17 October 2012; Accepted: 24 March 2013 ABSTRACT.– The species diversity of ground ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in a section of mixed deciduous and dry dipterocarp forests within the Sri Nan National Park, northern Thailand was investigated using hand collecting, leaf litter sifting, and pitfall traps. A total of 121 species belonging to 41 genera in 7 subfamilies was recorded. Thirteen species were recorded in the richest genus Camponotus. From the pitfall trap data, the means of ant species diversity indices in the mixed deciduous forest were significantly higher than those in dry dipterocarp forest (p≤0.05) in both the winter and summer (but not the rainy season), whilst the mean ant dominance indices were not significantly different between the mixed deciduous and dry dipterocarp forests in the summer and rainy seasons (p≤0.05). However, the mean dominance index was significantly higher in dry dipterocarp forest in winter than that in the mixed deciduous forest (p≤0.05). Anoplolepis gracilipes (Fr. Smith, 1857), an exotic species, and Odontoponera denticulata (Fr. Smith, 1858) were the most frequently found species in both forest areas. In summer, pitfall trap data indicated that the populations of both species were significantly higher in the mixed deciduous forest than in the dry dipterocarp forest (p≤0.05), but in the winter, Anoplolepis gracilipes populations were not statistically different between the two forests.
