(Hons.), NUS) A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE 2007 An adult male Manis javanica (MJ17) raiding an arboreal Oceophylla smaradgina nest. By shutting its nostrils and eyes, the Sunda Pangolin is able to protect its vulnerable parts from the powerful bites of this ant speces. A checklist of 82 ant species recorded from Gambia is given. Key words: ants, faunistics, Gambia, new country records. INTRODUCTION Ants fauna of Gambia (West Africa) is poorly known. Literature data, AntWeb and other Internet resources recorded only 59 species from this country. For comparison from Senegal, which surrounds three sides of Gambia, 89 species have been recorded so far. Both of these records seem poor when compared with 654 species known from the whole western Africa (SHUCKARD 1840, ANDRÉ 1889, EMERY 1892, MENOZZI 1926, SANTSCHI 1939, LUSH 2007, ANTWIKI 2017, ANTWEB 2017, DIAMÉ et al. 2017, TAYLOR 2018). Most records from Gambia come from general web checklists of species. Unfortunately, they lack locality data, date of sampling, collector name, coordinates of the locality and notes on habitats. -

Three occurred in all countries. With the exception of the leaf-nesting Oecophylla spp, all nested in leaf axils and spadices mostly between the two sheaths (spathes) and peduncle of the spadix. Up to eight species were found nesting in the same palm and five in the same spadix. In the latter circumstances the nest distribution of different non-dominant species is initially associated with the 'height' of available spaces, the smaller species nesting in the narrower, more distal end and the larger in the proximal end of the spadix. -

J. Sci. Univ. Kelaniya 7 (2012): 55-72 OCCURRENCE AND SPECIES DIVERSITY OF GROUND-DWELLING WORKER ANTS (FAMILY: FORMICIDAE) IN SELECTED LANDS IN THE DRY ZONE OF SRI LANKA R. K. SRIYANI DIAS AND K. R. K. ANURADHA KOSGAMAGE Department of Zoology, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka ABSTRACT Ants are an essential biotic component in terrestrial ecosystems in Sri Lanka. Worker ants were surveyed in six forests, uncultivated lands and, vegetable and fruit fields in two Districts of the dry zone, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, from November, 2007 to October, 2008 by employing several sampling methods simultaneously along five, 100 m transects. Soil sifting, litter sifting, honey-baiting and hand collection were carried out at 5 m intervals along each transect. Twenty pitfall traps were set up throughout each site and collected after five hours. Air and soil temperatures, soil pH and soil moisture at each transect were also recorded. Use of several sampling methods yielded a higher value for species richness than just one or two methods; values for each land ranged from 19 – 43 species. Each land had its own ant community and members of Amblyoponinae, Cerapachyinae, Dorylinae, Leptanillinae and Pseudomyrmecinae were recorded for the first time from the dry zone. Previous records of 40 species belonging to 23 genera in 5 subfamilies for the Anuradhapura District are updated to 78 species belonging to 36 genera in 6 subfamilies. Seventy species belonging to thirty one genera in 9 subfamilies recorded from the first survey of ants in Polonnaruwa lands can be considered a preliminary inventory of the District; current findings updated the ant species recorded from the dry zone to 92 of 42 genera in 10 subfamilies. -

LeBoeuf Abstract Trophallaxis is a complex social fluid exchange emblematic of social insects and of ants in particular. Trophallaxis behaviors are present in approximately half of all ant genera, distributed over 11 subfamilies. Across biological life, intra- and inter-species exchanged fluids tend to occur in only the most fitness-relevant behavioral contexts, typically transmitting endogenously produced molecules adapted to exert influence on the receiver’s physiology or behavior. Despite this, many aspects of trophallaxis remain poorly understood, such as the prevalence of the different forms of trophallaxis, the components transmitted, their roles in colony physiology and how these behaviors have evolved. With this review, we define the forms of trophallaxis observed in ants and bring together current knowledge on the mechanics of trophallaxis, the contents of the fluids transmitted, the contexts in which trophallaxis occurs and the roles these behaviors play in colony life. We identify six contexts where trophallaxis occurs: nourishment, short- and long-term decision making, immune defense, social maintenance, aggression, and inoculation and maintenance of the gut microbiota. Though many ideas have been put forth on the evolution of trophallaxis, our analyses support the idea that stomodeal trophallaxis has become a fixed aspect of colony life primarily in species that drink liquid food and, further, that the adoption of this behavior was key for some lineages in establishing ecological dominance. -

E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract. Agricultural practices are blamed for the reduction of ant diversity on earth. Contribution of four coconut plantations (CP) and four non-agricultural lands (NL) for sustaining diversity and relative abundance of ground-dwelling and ground-foraging ants was investigated by surveying them from May to October, 2018, in a CP and a NL in Minuwangoda, Mirigama, Katana and Veyangoda in Gampaha District that lies in the wet zone, Sri Lanka. Worker ants were surveyed by honey baiting and soil sifting along two transects at three, 50 m2 plots in each type of land. Workers were identified using standard methods and frequency of each ant species observed by each method was recorded. Percentage frequency of occurrence observed by each method, mean percentage frequency of occurrence of each ant species and proportional abundance of each species in each ant community were calculated. Species richness recorded by both methods at each CP was 14–19 whereas that recorded at each NL was 17–23. Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index values (Hʹ, CP: 2.06–2.36; NL: 2.11–2.56) and Shannon- Wiener Equitability Index values (Jʹ, CP: 0.73–0.87; NL: 0.7–0.88) showed a considerable diversity and evenness of ant communities at both types of lands. -

Laos is one of the most undersampled areas for ant biodiversity. We begin to address this knowledge gap by presenting the first checklist of Laotian ants. The list is based on a literature review and on specimens col- lected from several localities in Laos. In total, 123 species with three additional subspecies in 47 genera belonging to nine subfamilies are listed, including 62 species recorded for the first time in the country. Comparisons with neighboring countries suggest that this list is still very incomplete. The provincial distribu- tion of ants within Laos also show that most species recorded are from Vien- tiane Province, the central part of Laos while the majority of other provinces have received very little, if any, ant sampling. -

WARD Abstract The Afrotropical (including Malagasy) species of the ant genus Tetraponera F. SMITH, 1862 are evaluated, and five monophyletic species groups are established. A key is provided to these groups and their composition and distribution are summarized. One of these clades, the T. ambigua-group, is revised at the species level. Within this group the follow- ing new synonymies are proposed (senior synonyms listed first): T. ambigua (EMERY, 1895) = T. erythraea (EMERY, 1895) = T. bifoveolata (MAYR, 1895) = T. bifoveolata maculifrons (SANTSCHI, 1912) = T. ambigua rhodesiana (FOREL, 1913) = T. bifoveolata syriaca (WHEELER & MANN, 1916) = T. encephala (SANTSCHI, 1919) = T. oph- thalmica angolensis SANTSCHI, 1930 = T. ambigua occidentalis MENOZZI, 1934; and T. ophthalmica (EMERY, 1912) = T. ophthalmica tenebrosa SANTSCHI, 1928 = T. ophthalmica unidens SANTSCHI, 1928 = T. nasuta BERNARD, 1953. This reduces the number of valid species to two, T. ambigua and T. ophthalmica, both widely distributed on the Afri- can continent. Two additional species are described: T. parops sp.n., from east Africa and T. phragmotica sp.n., from northwestern Madagascar. All four species in the T. ambigua-group have a dimorphic worker caste, a trait otherwise unknown in the subfamily Pseudomyrmecinae. The major workers and queens of T. phragmotica sp.n. have plug- shaped heads, which are remarkably convergent with those of distantly related ant species in the formicine tribe Campo- notini. Five different habitats paddy, banana, rubber, coconut, vegetables garden (pea, ladies finger and brinjal) were selected. 25 species of Formicidae belonging to four subfamilies (Formicinae, Myrmicinae and Ponerinae) were collected. The distribution of species in the different subfamilies showed a dominance of Formicinae with 4 genus (15 species) followed by Myrmicinae with 5 genera (6 species), Ponerinae with 2 genera (3 species) and Pseudomyrmecinae with least species (1 species). The genus Camponotus (Mayr) was the most abundant genera with 12 species. Findings of this preliminary study indicated that much more detailed study should be conducted to investigate the diversity of ants of Macha region of Thrissur. They thrive in most ecosystems, and may form 15-25% of the terrestrial animal biomass [2].
