PROJECT INFORMATION Program / Project Title: To support iplay! Afterschool program by providing food and apparel items for low-income at-risk youth in the Harlandale, San Antonio, Southwest, and North East ISDs. PROJECT TIMELINE Start Date End Date 08/01/2021 04/30/2022 Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation Priorities: Food, Shelter and Clothing Program / Project Description: There is a significant need to address childhood obesity in San Antonio, as one in three children are considered overweight or obese (Metro Health District, 2019). There is also a need to address equity and access to sporting opportunities for children in underserved communities compared to children living in more affluent areas. Most underserved communities lack quality athletic facilities, equipment, staffing and money to provide sports opportunities for children. Participating in sports also helps to build a child's confidence and self-esteem, while also teaching the importance of healthy habits, self-discipline, social skills, teamwork, sportsmanship and listening skills. Children who don't participate in sports are more likely to break the law, drop out of school and go to prison while children who do participate in sports are more likely to perform well in school, stay off drugs and become and remain employed (Aries, 2016). A positive engagement with the school experience can also translate into a successful career as an adult. 95% of women executives in a "C-suite" position played sports as a child and 68% of executives, regardless of gender, played a sport in their youth, further reinforcing the relationship between youth sports and success later in life. i play! afterschool is San Antonio Sports' innovative afterschool program that ignites a love of sports in 3rd through 5th graders by providing early-stage development in five sports - soccer, track, volleyball, basketball and tennis. The program also teaches life lessons about active living, good nutrition, and strong personal character. For the 2019-2020 school year, San Antonio Sports served more than 1,400 children attending 58 elementary schools in four school districts through the program. In March 2020, when schools closed in response to COVID-19 and families began sheltering in place, San Antonio Sports created "i play! at home" (sanantoniosports.org/stay-active-stay-healthy/i-play-at-home). Our staff, armed with their smartphones, quickly created a few sport-training videos that our i play! afterschool participants could watch in order to continue developing their sport skills while at home for the remainder of the school year. As the new school year approached, we had an on-going conversation with our school district partners regarding the i play! afterschool program and how to better serve the children once school resumed. The answer was to take our written curriculum and turn it into a library of professionally produced instructional videos that teach fundamental skills in the sports traditionally offered by the i play! afterschool program. The 58 videos targeted third through fifth grade skill levels and are dynamic enough to serves as a resource for the child, parents, coaches and physical education instructors. To date, these videos have been viewed more than 129,000 times and have been utilized by 136 schools in 28 school districts.

Page 2 The objectives of the program include: 1) improve school attendance, 2) enhance nutritional knowledge and character development; 3) reduce or prevent childhood obesity; and 4) provide early-stage sports development in five sports. Our program outcomes indicate that the participants have markedly better school attendance compared to the general student population and have increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables from the beginning of the program. i play! afterschool participants also have a higher proficiency in reading and math compared to other students in their school district and have fewer behavioral problems. Participants also improve their skill level in each sport offered when compared to their ability at the beginning of the five-week sport unit. Parents have also rated the program very favorably.

For the 2021-2022 school year we fully expect to be back to "normal", offering in-person afterschool programming for up to 1,450 school children in four school districts. The program will be held Monday-Friday for one hour during the normally scheduled afterschool programming. Each of the five sports will be instructed for five weeks and at the end of the sports unit all schools will come together to participate in a one-day program wide tournament. The winning school will be presented with a trophy to display at their school and the participants on the top three teams will be awarded medals. The program wide tournaments will all be held with COVID safety protocols in place, as advised by the San Antonio Metro Health Department and Center for Disease Control. If funding from the Najim Charitable Foundation is available to support this program, funding will be used to provide each child with an i play! afterschool uniform, consisting of a t-shirt, shorts, sneakers and two pairs of athletic socks. Funding will also support the meals at four of the five program wide tournaments and transportation to and from each tournament. Transportation is a critical component of the program and ensures that every child is able to participate in the tournaments.

Evaluation Plan: San Antonio Sports collects data for the i play! afterschool program to document the meaningful changes that occur in the lives of the participants. Through our collaboration with Excel Beyond the Bell and UP Partnership we receive an Education Success Scorecard which provides measurements such as attendance, grades, disciplinary referrals and at-risk status. We take the lead in collecting information on the participants' nutrition habits, motor skill development and basic demographic information through pre- and post-surveys to better understand the programs impact in these areas. We also survey the parents at the end of the program to determine their satisfaction with the program and work with CORE Research to design questionnaires, tabulate results, analyze participation and develop reports. We also compare our results against that of data provided by Excel Beyond the Bell and UP Partnership to track our performance compared to other organizations that serve children. Plans to sustain project beyond the term of this request: The staff and board of directors of San Antonio Sports are dedicated to offering this one-of-a-kind program to elementary school students throughout San Antonio. To continue offering this program, we aggressively seek funding through grants, corporate sponsorships, individual donors, in-kind donations and the proceeds from fundraising events, such as the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Gala. Through our numerous partnerships, we are able to expand off of already existing afterschool programming, which helps us to keep costs low. In recent years, the organization conducted a "Power of Sport" campaign, soliciting critical funds from business and civic leaders in the San Antonio community to help sustain and expand the program in the long-term.
