The nonprofit Heal the Bay’s 30th annual Coastal Cleanup Day occurs on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon at numerous Los Angeles County beaches, rivers, parks and other locations. More than 10,000 volunteers have committed, yet the organization is seeking more to remove trash and debris at over 70 sites. Members of the public can enjoy the outdoors while meeting others, beautifying communities and improving the environment. Heal the Bay is also hosting a sock drive in support of people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers are encouraged to bring clean new and gently used socks to cleanup sites in Santa Monica. The socks will be donated to West Coast Care. Last year, 13,464 participants col- lected 29.8 tons of debris on “Coastal Cleanup Day.” Cigarette butts and single-use plastic beverage and food packaging were among the most frequently found items. Cleanup sites will be located along the Los Angeles coastline and Los Angeles River. For information and to register, visit healthebay.org.
