Jones, Jr. Abstract From 1941 to 1971, the Classics Illustrated series of comic-book adaptations of works by Shakespeare, Hugo, Dickens, Twain, and others provided a gateway to great literature for millions of young readers. Jules Verne was the most popular author in the Classics catalog, with ten titles in circulation. The first of these to be adapted, Michael Strogoff (June 1946), was the favorite of the Russian-born series founder, Albert L. Kanter. The last to be included, Tigers and Traitors (May 1962), indicated how far among the Extraordinary Voyages the editorial selections could range. This article explores the Classics Illustrated pictorial abridgments of such well-known novels as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days and more esoteric selections such as Off on a Comet and Robur the Conqueror. Attention is given to both the adaptations and the artwork, generously represented, that first drew many readers to Jules Verne. Click on images to view in full size.     ‘A King of Infinite Space’: Shakespearian Spaces between Stage and Comics Eleonora Fois Shakespeare and Comics As Gilbert Seldes noticed, «Of all the lively arts the comic strip is the most despised, and with the exception of the movies is the most popular» (Seldes: 1924, 213): such popularity was exploited by comics such as Crazy Cat to tackle social and moral issues. While there is little doubt as to the readers’ appreciation, comics fought against a persistent skepticism (concerning their quality and their artistic value) which became particularly harsh when they dared to embrace and interpret revered artists and pillars of the Western canon like Shakespeare. Such inspiration in particular has been fueling the conflict between popular and high culture, whose core probably lies in interpreting the term ‘popular’ as a simplified rendition of an artistic work (Shaughnessy 2007). A ‘popular’ work reaches the highest and indiscriminate number of people, and the term ‘popular culture’ itself seems to imply mass consumption (Gillespie and Rhodes 2006: 1) and loss of quality. It is worth remembering, however, that Shakespeare thrived by challenging with ease the two-tier, stiff classification between high and low contents (Henderson 2007: 15). Moreover, Shakespeare’s cultural endurance is closely connected to the popular interest; hence, inter- semiotic translations of his plays are vital, and their analysis should be encouraged.     Homer in Print: The Transmissions and Reception of Homer’s Works For nearly 3,000 years, the Homeric epics have been among the best-known and most widely studied texts of Western civilization. Generations of students have read the Iliad and the Odyssey to learn Greek, to study Greek history, culture, and mythology, or for the sheer enjoyment of the stories and characters. Concepts such as heroism, nationalism, friendship, and loyalty have been shaped by Homer’s works. Countless editions, translations, abridgements, and adaptations have appeared since the invention of printing, making Homer accessible to students, scholars, children, and general readers. Many readers delight in the stories and the people who inhabit them. The Iliad and the Odyssey are filled with the momentum of action, emotions, relationships, violence, and tragedy. Complex and memorable characters—humans and gods—can be subjected to unending scrutiny. Some wonder about the author: Who was Homer? Did such a person really exist and if so, when? What was his role in compiling the works we read today? Others analyze language, narrative techniques, pictorial elements, and a host of other features.     Meddling with “hifalut’n foolishness”: Capturing Mark Twain in Recent Comics1 DEREK PARKER ROYAL ith the exception of Edgar Allan Poe,2 no American writer has been more adapted to comic book form than Mark Twain. Char- Wacters such as Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Hank Morgan have found form in a variety of illustrated texts, and even the figure of Mark Twain himself—an icon of American literature—has appeared through a variety of popular culture media. We see Twain’s work and persona translated through children’s picture books, animated cartoons, popular music, super- hero comics, television series, Broadway performances, Disney World exhibits, webcomics, science fiction novels, and video games. Such an abundance of material is indeed staggering, giving pause to almost any cultural critic. Some of the most striking examples of this phenomenon include the many recent adaptations of his narratives into comic book and graphic novel form—or what Pap Finn might call “meddl[ing] with such hifalut’n foolishness” (Twain 24).3 Recently there have been several notable examples of Twain-related comics that take the adaptation of his work in curious new directions. Earlier comic book adaptations of Twain’s narratives were more or less static in their presentation—presenting their stories primarily through medium-shot panels with little variation of perspective—and privileged “fidelity” to the original plots. Indeed, many of the writers/adapters of the original Classics Illustrated comic book series followed the storylines closely and left little room for creative interpretation, succumbing to a “factory” formula that, according to Geoffrey O’Brien, resulted in “officially sanctioned blandness” (qtd.

    Childhood Memories of Popular Literature: Discussions with Readers of Greek Pulp Magazines for Children and Teenagers During the 1950s and the 1960s by Nikos Filippaios, University of Ioannina 1. Social and cultural background Greek popular literature magazines for children and teenagers during the 1950s and the 1960s have never been the subject of comprehensive academic research. This fact is due mainly to the underestimation of these magazines by the majority of the scientific circles of Social Studies and Humanities in Greece. So, with the exception of a very few articles in journals and even less announcements at conferences, Greek children's popular literature of the 1950s and 1960s became a research field for journalists, publishers, writers and mainly collectors and amateur scholars. Therefore, a view on those readings by the perspective of the readership, namely a survey based on interviews of old readers has never been attempted. In this article, I examine the results of interviews with old readers and also I will argue that this popular literature played a crucial role in influencing the mentality, ideology and lifestyle of children and adolescents of the 1950s and 1960s. These two decades mark a significant era in Modern Greek history, a period of contradiction and turbulence in the political, social and cultural level. More specifically, during the 1950s, the Right-winged political forces, who had already won the Civil War (1946–1949), established their power, as Greek state gradually was built around an ideology of introvert ethnocentrism. Thus, censorship and persecution of the Left had been very intense, cut-off from any professional position in the drastically growing public sector up to physical violence.

ABSTRACT This thesis examines the process of adaptation of Shakespeare’s plays into the graphic novel medium. It traces the history of these adaptations from the first comic books produced in the mid-twentieth century to graphic novels produced in the twenty-first century. The editions used for examination have been selected as they are indicative of key developments in the history of adaptation of Shakespeare’s plays into the medium. This thesis explores how the plays are presented and the influences on the styles of presentation. It traces the history of the form and how the adaptations have been received in various periods.

    How the Historical Context is absorbed into the “Language” of Comic Books for Children: The Case of Greek Tragedies’ Adaptations Dr. Moula Evangelia Executive in Innovative Activities in Secondary Education, Rhodes, Greece [email protected] Abstract Youth’s preference and interest in comic strip art suggests that it can be a viable medium for promoting and developing literacy. Comics realize semiotic realities. The visual elements, the combination of images with words in an inextricable relationship and the cultural context of their production and reception as well, are the basic components of comic books’ language. Comic book adaptations of classical works popularize and make classical texts accessible to the mass, promoting this way cultural literacy. Such adaptations give the original scripts the opportunity to shed their reputation for merely illustrating written narrative, and for serving the function of simplifying. Moreover, it is asserted that by incorporating comics in curriculums, the gap between real life and school could be bridged, provided that instead of reading comics just for fun, students are guided to understand and interpret their meaning generating mechanisms and to recognize how the historical and social realm is being inscribed in them. In other words provided students manage to read critically “between the lines”. We are going to examine two characteristic moments of Greek tragedies’ comic book adaptations for children, published in two different historical periods. Tragedy in modern Greece has mainly been used as the matrix for Greek national virtues, constructing and consolidating a continuous and non- negotiable national identity. Classics Illustrated adaptations that first appeared and were prominent during the 60s follow the norm of the literary tradition of Tragedies’ adaptations.
