Classic South Devon steers (22m) with plenty of growing to do looked good money at £1030 (x3) from David & Karen Smith of Littlehempston followed by RD Hickman & Son again with their South Devon’s (21m) to £970 (x5) and £960 (x5), also younger (18m) South Devon’s got £950 for Jon Vincent of Staddiscombe, Plymouth. Later born steers saw three neat Hereford’s (15m) make £680 a life for Adcock & Wotton of Moretonhampstead and a mixed pen of Limousin and Angus (13m) at £640 apiece for WJ Gillard & Sons of Drewsteignton.     VOLUME 2 OF 2 CIVILIAN EVACUATION TO DEVON IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Submitted by S.J. HESS as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, 2006 CHAPTER SEVEN The ‘slum mentality’ of the evacuee – the myth challenged This Chapter firstly assesses Devon’s pre-war school medical service. Discussion then focuses on four crucial health issues which became problematic during evacuation, namely dirty habits, pediculosis (head lice), enuresis (bedwetting) and skin infections. The development of hostels for evacuees deemed unsuitable for billeting on arrival is also discussed. These health issues generated much adverse publicity, particularly during the first evacuation wave, and led to the persistent myth that evacuees were dirty, ill-trained and that they introduced pediculosis and skin infections into reception areas. Local documentary archive material is used to examine Devon’s experience and support the argument that generalised and exaggerated adverse publicity fostered a false stereotype. The largest number of evacuee children came to Devon in 1940 at a time when medical checks were improved, both in evacuation and reception areas. In addition the County already had an established degree of pediculosis and skin infections before evacuation. No evidence of a public or official outcry has been found locally to compare with reports emanating from some reception areas, particularly those areas receiving children from northern evacuation areas such as Merseyside.1 This variance with the ‘received’ version of events highlights the importance of local research. 1 The percentage of Merseyside children suffering from pediculosis, who were evacuated to areas such as Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire, was between 22-50% compared with children from London where the percentage ranged from 8-35%.

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ………………………………………. 1 ABSTRACT Extensive sources have been reviewed and analysed to piece together for the first time a detailed academic study of civilian evacuation to Devon1 viewed against the national backdrop. The primary focus of this thesis is the large number of unaccompanied children who were officially evacuated to the County under the auspices of the Government Evacuation Scheme during the Second World War. However, Chapter Six discusses the evacuation of mothers and accompanying children, unofficial (private) evacuees and private school parties. The majority of evacuated children arriving in Devon originated from the London area and southeastern counties. In addition large numbers of children were also evacuated to the County from Bristol and within the County from Plymouth (Devon) during 1941 and briefly from Exeter in May 1942. Each of the three national evacuation waves is considered individually throughout the text as they are quite distinct in complexion, a fact frequently ignored in generalised accounts which tend to focus on reaction to the initial wave.

Prime topped at 204ppk for a nicely covered 530kg purebred Limousin steer from Michael Ayre of Thorverton followed by smart Blonde cattle from Bottor Rock Farms, Hennock who saw a 650kg steer reach 200ppk and £1296 and a 590kg heifer rise to 196ppk and £1157. Further quality Blonde bred prime from Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey saw their best steer to 197ppk and £1259 whilst a 600kg Blonde heifers from the Harvey’s also reached 197ppk and realised £1179. Phillip Haydon of Cheriton Bishop sold a smashing 600kg Limousin heifer for 196ppk and £1173 followed by his 680kg South Devon steer which sold for 188ppk and £1286. Bill Hobbs of Moretonhampstead saw his well-fleshed 580kg Limousin heifer draw 194ppk and £1130 whilst Graham Tancock of Broadclyst sold a heavyweight 716kg Blue steer for 188ppk or £1342. A nice run of Devon heifers from Miles and Gail Fursdon of Widecombe in the Moor saw the better ones to 188ppk and £1083. Barren cows topped 153ppk for a young Angus from The Tully Partnership of Brixham whilst a very decent 680kg red Limousin made 138ppk or £935 for John Towill and daughter of Shaldon.
