Steers to £1180 Heifers to £995

2019 kicked off with a decent show of mainly beef bred stores with a top of £1180 given for the better pair of a fine run of Devon cross steers (24m) from John Searle of North whilst another very decent consignment of Meuse Rhine Issel cross store steers (24m) from Mike and Steve Gilpin of Dawlish reached £1085 for a trio and £1075 for a pen of four younger (22m) sorts. Further top quality steers from RD Hickman & Son, Ashburton saw a bunch of four Charolais cross (22m) fetch £1080 apiece with Limousin’s of a similar age drawing £1005. Classic South Devon steers (22m) with plenty of growing to do looked good money at £1030 (x3) from David & Karen Smith of Littlehempston followed by RD Hickman & Son again with their South Devon’s (21m) to £970 (x5) and £960 (x5), also younger (18m) South Devon’s got £950 for Jon Vincent of Staddiscombe, Plymouth. Later born steers saw three neat Hereford’s (15m) make £680 a life for Adcock & Wotton of Moretonhampstead and a mixed pen of Limousin and Angus (13m) at £640 apiece for WJ Gillard & Sons of Drewsteignton. A forward South Devon cross heifer (24m) from Jon Vincent topped that section at £995 closely followed by a trio of Devon cross (23m) from John Searle at £975 each. David & Karen Smith sold the best of their South Devon heifers (22m) for £945 (x3) with Blonde De Aquitaine females (22m) to £875 for Jon Vincent and £860 for a single Angus (24m) for Mike & Steve Gilpin, the latter also selling young Angus cow & calf outfits for £1160 with steer calves at foot and £1060 with heifer calves.

A small show of stirks and suckled calves met a reasonable trade. Limousin cross steers from Gordon Bricknell of achieved £675 with others hitting £645, whilst a run of up from GER & CER James of Penzance saw the best of the steers hit £450. Heifers tipped at £540 for Limousin crosses again from Gordon Bricknell.

A reasonable entry to start the year saw a very British Blue 11 315 215 18 258 174 decent trade with only the very best looking better value. Medium and small calves looked very dear! Limousin 1 290 290 Top of the day was £315 for a British Blue bull from Charolais 2 250 238 3 220 198 Waterford Farm Partnership of who Simmental 5 260 229 sold others to £300. Other Blue bulls to £312 & Aberdeen Angus 5 238 176 9 155 104 £300 for Paul Hendy of Aveton Gifford who also sold a Limousin bull at £290. Simmental bulls to Hereford 1 75 75 3 150 101 £260 for Malcolm & Kay Pring of Broadclyst with Holstein / Friesian 5 72 22 1 50 50 others to £250, £245 & £220 for Martin & Liz Bennett of Broadhembury. Charolais bulls sold very well to £250 & £225 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of Axminster. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £238 for RMP Farm of Cullompton. Heifers topped at £258 for a British Blue from Paul Hendy with others to £225 for Waterford Farm, £210 for Messrs DW Rowe of Axminster and £205 for Roy Emmett of Cullompton. Charolais heifers to £220 for John Simmons of . Only a handful of Friesians to £72 for Messrs KF & LW Mitcham of Axminster.

17 ORPHAN LAMBS

Orphans were a livelier trade and reached £26 twice for Peter Vooght of South Brent, £20 for both R Down of Talaton and Andrew Hext of Staverton with majority of others from £12 to £16 and the overall average was £15.41, up £1.70.

1705 STORE HOGGS

A decent number of 1705 store hoggs were present to kick start the New Year in front of a large crowd of competitive buyers who pushed the best twenty pens over £80 and to a top of £89 for Marles Farm Services of Farringdon, whose second pen achieved £86.50. D Cocks & Child of Rackenford exhibited their usual quality with four pens selling at £87.50, £86.50, £86 & £85, Mark Blake of Millbrook sold his two pens at £87 & £80.50, £87 also for Kevin Wreyford of Blackawton as both Rob & Kelly Barons of Slapton and Ian & Jade Lethbridge of East Allington sold their best at £86. Short term hoggs £75 to £85 with plenty of medium term hoggs in the £70’s whilst longer term hoggs were generally £58 plus and all in they averaged £70.42.

67 GRAZING & BREEDING EWES & RAMS

Grazers were a slightly better trade and peaked at £76 for B Wills of Meavy who had others at £73.50 and In-Lamb ewes sold to £71 for J Bond of Combe Raleigh.

378 COUPLES (159 EWES & 219 LAMBS)

The largest entry of couples so far this seasonBREEDING included the EWES first of &the RAMS crossbred ewes that met much demand topping at £230 for Suffolk x Cheviot Mule FM doubles from Darryl & Sarah Cheacker of Bristol who also had a Suffolk mule double at £208. Dorset doubles sold to £220 for David & Adrian Cole of , £212 for John & Diane Vooght of Dunsford and £198 for both Derek Cole of Bradninch and Helen Fuller of Simonsbath whilst majority of others were £165 to £195. Singles sold to £155 again for Derek Cole whilst on the whole they traded from £118 to £138 with just a few lesser sorts below this and looking chancey.
