L’Istituto Italiano di Cultura Washington DC presents: The Artemisia Connection - Webinar at Casa Buonarroti Museum in Florence. When Michelangelo the Younger commissioned a 5-month pregnant Artemisia Gentileschi to paint the Allegory of Inclination on Casa Buonarroti’s ceiling, the fee was three times that of her male counterparts. Her allegorical depiction represented just one of many 'virtues' painted to commemorate the qualities of ‘the Divine Michelangelo’. And it had Artemisia’s face.

During this program, introduced by Cristina Acidini, President of Casa Buonarroti, and taking place inside the very gallery where Artemisia’s angelic figure still lives, Conservator Elizabeth Wicks will interview author Linda Falcone, Director of Advancing Women Artists. How did Artemisia’s Florentine relationships give momentum to her career? Was her Inclination a game-changer? Do Michelangelo’s ‘virtues’ apply to historic female artists and their context? Please register here The Artemisia Connection Sunday March 21 - 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm

"Dantedì - A Day with Dante"

Established in 2020, Dantedì is the national day dedicated to Dante Alighieri. March 25th was chosen as it is recognized by scholars as the day the poet started his journey in the afterlife in the Divine Comedy. The IIC in Washington in collaboration with the Department of Italian at Georgetown University and the Georgetown University Doyle Seminar, presents two lectures. In “Radical Dante”, Prof. Dennis Looney will argue how a world that initially appears so properly ordered - cosmologically, morally, and aesthetically – makes the poet raise questions on the notion of order itself. In the second part of the webinar, “Dante in the World”, Prof. Deborah Park (University of Virginia) will discuss adaptations of Dante by writers, artists, and politicians from China, Japan, Africa, South America and the US.
