MACBETH PERIOD; (The Reign of Suleyman the Magnificent)

MUSTAFA OZMEN Brief history The Ottoman Empire was an empire founded in 1299. The Ottomans ended the Byzantine Empire with the conquest of () by in 1453. My adaption of Macbeth will be set in Constantinople during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent (1520 – 1566), at which time the Ottoman Empire was at the height of its power, Suleyman the Magnificent (portrait being multinational, multilingual and controlling attributed to Titian – 1530) much of southeast Europe and also parts of Asia and Africa. Iconography

The first part of my research was looking at how this period of history was told by the artists of the time. I looked at paintings and drawings which gave me an idea of colour schemes/ palettes. They also include parts of the architecture of the period, both interior and exterior. Sinan and the chief architects planning (possibly Suleymaniye mosque)

Calligraphy The Ottomans resembled their predecessors in and Central Asia by seeing the written word as a matter of tradition. Calligraphy was important for day to day manuscript production. In many cases it also is an important design element both in architecture and armory. Tugra of Suleyman the Magnificent Calligraphy elsewhere

The architecture of the Ottoman Empire began to develop in the 14th and 15th centuries, and was influenced by Byzantine architecture, Iranian architecture and other Turkic traditions that developed after the fall of Constantinople. Byzantine architecture, such as the church of were used as models for many Ottoman structures. The chief architect of the empire in the 16th century was Sinan (the Architect), who served for 3 sultans; Suleyman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murad III.

Location I did this concept drawing trying to imagine what my final design would end up looking like at least structurally. When I first chose the Ottoman period I knew that the interior location would be a palace/ mosque which would be the Sultan (Macbeths) living quarters. The interiors of such palaces are vast and grand with many rooms, I will be doing a ‘Throne Room’. Usually used by the sultan to greet his important guests, I want Macbeth to steer away from that and use it as his own living room. I pictured him in this huge room by himself as he descends into madness (and sees Banquo's ghost on his throne)

The design requires a huge dome, and arches supported by pillars. This is the very basic form of the design, without any of the geometrical influences and specific designs, just an overview of structure. St Stephen Walbrook St Stephen Walbrook is a church in London near Bank station. The domed building was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (1632 – 1723) and constructed in 1672-9. Sir Christopher Wren was a notable anatomist, astronomer, geometer and mathematician-physicist. His scientific work was highly regarded by Isaac Newton and Blaise Pascal. My own photos I chose this location because of the domed interior and also because of Sir Christopher Wren’s design, which is mathematically harmonious when studied carefully. So far I have only been able to get measurements for an accurate floorplan. I am currently researching and looking for any elevation of this building I can find to give me an idea of its height/s (dome, pillars) and also the diameter of the dome.
