Villa Caterina Region: Montepulciano Sleeps: 11 Villa Caterina Region: Montepulciano Sleeps: 11 Overview A rural escape in the middle of the Val d'Orcia in southern Tuscany, traditional stone farmhouse Villa Caterina blends effortlessly into the countryside. The villa's idyllic location offers you a wonderfully quiet atmosphere in which to soak up the sweeping views and the magnificent hilltop fortress in Radicofani can also clearly seen in all its splendour. And though Villa Caterina is secluded, the town of Radicofani itself is only a five-minute drive away. Many other villages and towns are easy to reach too. There's Sarteano with a wealth of ancient history to offer and San Cascinao dei Bagni; famous for its thermal baths. This typical, five-bedroom Tuscan farmhouse set over three floors has undergone a careful restoration in recent years. Mixing traditional features, such as wood-beamed ceilings and tile floors, with modern luxuries has transformed it into both a comfortable and striking holiday home. You'll also be surprised by objects from across the world found in many of its characterful rooms. The most unique aspect of Villa Caterina is the wall art that depicts local rural scenes and a colourful depiction of wildlife. Relax in the main living room with its stunning fireplace, then move to the dining room for a delicious meal with a glorious mural as a backdrop. The two other living spaces are also full of character. All five bedrooms and bathrooms have their own personality, with a different mural and colour scheme. And each has an ensuite bathroom or shower room; several of which boast a chromotherapy shower for a super-soothing experience. Villa Caterina sits within 10 hectares of traditional Mediterranean gardens. Cool off in the pool on sunny afternoons and spend evenings on the covered terrace with great food, drinks and company. The romantic pergola is another lovely place to take in the peaceful scenery all around you. In less than 10 minutes you could drive to the town of Radicofani and be well on your way to the top of famous Fortezza di Radicofani. You could also be strolling around the tranquil park and gardens of Bosco Isabella. Page 1 The medieval towns of Cetona and San Casciano dei Bagni are short drives away. Cetona also has an impressive fortress to visit; 10th-century La Rocca. San Casciano dei Bagni is particularly known for its thermal baths, along with Chianciano Terme, which is around a 40-minute drive from the villa. But the villa also occupies a secluded location within the idyllic Val d'Orcia where views of Radicofani's famous hilltop fortress can be enjoyed. Even closer and on the doorstep are long walks through the surrounding countryside and rolling hills. You can explore this part of the Val d'Orcia on two wheels too. Because not only is Radicofani the place to buy groceries and enjoy meals out, it's also home to an ebike rental shop. An experienced guide will take you on a wonderful journey through the lush landscapes as you learn more about the area. Another fortress town to visit nearby is medieval Cetona. Dating back to the 10 th century, La Rocca is a stunning sight to behold and also provides amazing views of Mount Cetona. Also visit San Casciano dei Bagni to see well- preserved medieval buildings, as well as the famous thermal baths. Chianciano Terme is also another great place to learn about and experience these thermal baths. The Val d'Orcia region is rich in history, with the town of Sarteano having some of the very best examples of ancient Etruscan tombs in Tuscany. Necropoli Delle Piancce and the Sarteano Etruscan Museum are definite must- visits. The region is also well-known for wine production, and the hilltop town of Montepulciano is just over a 45-minute drive from the villa. The town is famous for its vino nobile red wine and you can try some for yourself in one of Montepulciano's wineries. Path to Rome Walk May 8 to 20, 2018 “A delight—great food and wine, beautiful countryside, lovely hotels and congenial fellow travelers with whom to enjoy it all.” —Alison Anderson, Italian Lakes Walk, 2016 RAVEL a portion of the Via Francigena, the pilgrimage route that linked T Canterbury to Rome in the Middle Ages, following its route north of Rome through olive groves, vineyards and ancient cypress trees. Discover the pleasures of Central Italy’s lesser-known cities, such as Buonconvento, Bolsena, Caprarola and Calcata. With professor of humanities Elaine Treharne as our faculty leader and Peter Watson as our guide, we refresh our minds, bodies and souls on our walks, during which we stop to picnic on hearty agrarian cuisine and enjoy the peace and quiet that are hallmarks of these beautiful rural settings. At the end of our meanderings, descend from the hills of Rome via Viale Angelico to arrive at St. Peter’s Basilica, the seat of Catholicism and home to a vast store of art treasures, including the Sistine Chapel. Join us! Faculty Leader Professor Elaine Treharne joined the Stanford faculty in 2012 in the School of Humanities and Sciences as a Professor of English. She is also the director of the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis. Her main research focuses on early medieval manuscripts, Old and Middle English religious poetry and prose, and the history of handwriting. Included in that research is her current project, which looks at the materiality of textual objects, together with the patterns that emerge in the long history of text technologies, from the earliest times (circa 70,000 B.C.E.) to the present day.

  • Storia Di Radicofani E Della Sua Fortezza RENATO MAGI

"Amphorae on the Roman Villa at Aiano- Torraccia di Chiusi (San Gimignano-Siena-Italy)" Cavalieri, Marco Abstract Since 2005 an Italian-Belgian mission, carried out by the Université catholique de Louvain, part of the international project “VII REGIO. Valdelsa during the Roman Age and late Antiquity” brought to light the monumental remains of a Roman villa, inhabited between the 4rd and the 5th century C.E., and abandoned in the period between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 7th century C.E. The ruins of the representative part of the villa, altered in the 4th c., consist of a room with apses and an opus signinum floor with limestone tesserae mosaics, surrounded by a structure characterized by curvilinear walls. Between the 6th and the 7th century C.E. the remains of the structure were occupied by a group of people of clear Germanic origin with a consequent change in function. The space was parceled to host various workshops in which ceramics, iron and other materials were produced. In some of the re-adapted rooms structures for glass production can be recognized.
