For many years the school of thought was that high levels of sugar and fat were causing an increase in people developing Type 2 Diabetes, Pre- diabetes and Obesity. The guidance was to reduce sugar and fat in the diet in order to reduce weight and blood glucose levels. Although reducing sugar is key, reducing carbohydrates is also essential as carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta and potatoes amongst others) are broken down in your body into sugar. A GP from Southport called Dr David Unwin has turned the traditional thinking on its head by studying the impact of a low carbohydrate diet on his patients with Diabetes.
