Step-by-Step Process

Reserving a Flight Arranging a Celestis Memorial Spaceflight is a simple process, designed with utmost care and supported by a professional staff at every step. Review the enclosed documents and select one of the services. Include either a check payable to Celestis or your credit card information, and return the contract to the address listed on the form . Submitting the Flight Sample We will send you a Flight Sampling Kit that permits you, or your funeral service provider, to send us the cremated remains sample for the flight. We ask for twice the amount of remains to be launched, and will scatter the unflown balance near the launch site when the flight occurs. In the unlikely, though possible, event of an initial attempt that does not reach mission completion, our performance guarantee provides for a second attempt at no additional cost. The Flight Sampling Kit includes a prepaid, return mailer, which ensures the safe transport of the flight sample to our Houston, Texas headquarters. Preparing the Flight Sample The flight sample is stored in a safe deposit box at our bank in Houston, Texas. Far in advance of the scheduled launch, funeral service professionals will transfer the cremated remains flight sample from the storage container to the flight vessel. This process is photographed to create a visual record of the remains handling. The flight vessels are then placed inside the Celestis spacecraft and transferred to the payload integration location, usually either the actual launch site or the launch vehicle manufacturer’s location. Celestis contracts with launch vehicle providers for “secondary space” aboard a rocket that will place a commercial or scientific satellite into space. The payload integration process is also photographed for permanent record keeping. Launch and Related Activities As the launch date draws near, our customer service department issues newsletter e-mails and alerts, and establishes a telephone launch “hotline” to keep family and friends apprised of the status of the launch. Launches are subject to delays and we urge everyone to constantly check with us before proceeding to the launch site. Depending on the launch site, Celestis establishes its headquarters at a hotel near the launch site and, where available, conducts launch- related activities from this hotel. Pre launch briefings and a memorial service are typically conducted on the day before the launch. On launch day, a viewing site is established with Celestis staff on site. Attendance at the launch is encouraged, but the costs of travel, lodging, and incidentals are the responsibility of the attendees. Celestis provides an information package for attendees and we will assist, as best we can, with anything that will enhance the launch experience for our customers, their families, and friends. Post Launch After a successful launch, Celestis provides a professionally produced video of the launch and related events to the participant’s family or designee. Additional copies are available for purchase. For those who have selected the Preferred service, we also provide a Commemorative Plaque. Our staff remains committed to serving our clients in any way we can and many of our clients return for additional launch events as part of our extended family.
