Author‘s signature Acknowledgements There are many people, who would deserve my thanks for this work being completed, but I am bound to omit someone unintentionally, for which I deeply apologise in advance. My thanks naturally goes to my family, with whom I used to watch Star Trek every day, for their eternal support and understanding; to my friends, namely and especially to Vítězslav Mareš for proofreading and immense help with the historical background, Miroslav Pilař for proofreading, Viktor Dvořák for suggestions, all the classmates and friends for support and/or suggestions, especially Lenka Pokorná, Kristina Alešová, Petra Grünwaldová, Melanie King, Tereza Pavlíková and Blanka Šustrová for enthusiasm and cheering. I want to thank to all the creators of ―Memory Alpha‖, a wiki-based web-page, which contains truly encyclopaedic information about Star Trek and from which I drew almost all the quantifiable data like numbers of the episodes and their air dates. I also want to thank to Christina M. Luckings for her page of ST transcripts, which was a great help. A huge, sincere thank you goes to Jeff A. Smith, my supervisor, and an endless source of useful materials, suggestions and ideas, which shaped this thesis, and were the primary cause that it was written at all.

College of Fine Arts CD-ROM A Multimedia Tour of Programs A new multimedia CD-Rom offers prospective students a chance to explore Ball State University’s Visit us at College of Fine Arts with the click of a button. The CD-Rom showcases the use of technology in the college and www.bsu.edu/cfa was spearheaded by Christine Satory, associate professor of art, in collaboration with the Department of Art, the Department of Theatre and Dance, the School of Music, and the Museum of Art. The project began in Satory’s Advanced Multimedia Practicum class in spring 2000. Students designed the project, set up interviews and gathered the raw materials for the CD. After the class ended, Satory worked with two graphic design students to refine the materials gathered. The CD-Rom was released this fall after nearly eighteen months in production. The project grew out of Satory’s desire to explore how technology and art intersect, and to Dean’s educate both students and the public on those intersections. 2005 JOURNAL 311 X. HISTORICAL MATERIAL A. HISTORICAL SKETCH The Western North Carolina Conference shall include all North Carolina west of the North Caro- lina Conference, except Savannah Church, in Alleghany County, North Carolina; and also that part of North Carolina lying north of the New River, and including that part of Virginia lying south of that river in the loop in Grayson County, Virginia; including all the territory in Carroll and Patrick Coun- ties, Virginia, south of the crest of the Blue Ridge, and west of the Dan River. (Discipline, 1948, ¶ 1957) This territory is identical with that of the Western North Carolina Conference of the former Methodist Episco- pal Church, South. All three branches of Methodism forming The Methodist Church were included in this new conference. From the Blue Ridge-Atlantic Conference of the former Methodist Episcopal Church came 39 min- isters and 11,901 church members. The North Carolina Conference of the former Methodist Protestant Church contributed 74 ministers and 22,361 church members. The Western North Carolina Conference of the former Methodist Episcopal Church, South, added 377 ministers and 167,028 church members. This gave the new conference 490 members, with 28 others on trial, and 201,290 church members. The Blue Ridge-Atlantic Con- ference has held 62 sessions; the North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church, 112; and the Western North Carolina, 50 (see Journal, 1939, pp. 115, 169). The Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church was formed on June 5, 1968, by the merger of the Western North Carolina Conference and that portion of the North Carolina-Virginia Confer- ence situated within the bounds of the Western North Carolina Conference (see Journal, 1968, p.
