Arts Council Touring of Young Contemporaries, 1949 – 1968 From the very first exhibition of Young Contemporaries in 1949 until the end of the 1960s the Arts Council of Great Britain organised a smaller selection of work (approx. 30 to 50 from the 300 to 500 shown in the London exhibition) to tour venues across the UK. This was part of a larger overall strategy developed by the Arts Council of Great Britain to expand access to the arts outside of London. The Arts Council tour of the Young Contemporaries also offered further support to the selected artists beyond the public platform through the specific promotion of the works for sale - “here is an opportunity to buy a picture or print by a living artist for the home and at the same time to support this courageous venture” - and through paying touring fees. As one artist writes, the touring fees, at times, were the very real difference between ‘being able to eat or not’, as the participating artists began their journey from art student to professional artist.
