Introduction Les mouvements étudiants acadiens des années 1960 : une force de gauche ou d’affirmation nationale ? es années 1960 représentent, globalement, une décen- nie heureuse dans l’histoire des Acadiens du Nouveau- L Brunswick, une décennie d’optimisme pendant laquelle la population francophone de cette province du littoral atlantique cana- dien a eu l’impression de finalement mériter une place au soleil après deux siècles de survivance, voire de survie. L’élection du premier Acadien comme premier ministre de la province, la création d’une université moderne de langue française, la réforme progressiste et égalitaire de la fiscalité et des services publics provinciaux, l’affirmation d’une volonté politique d’accélérer le développement économique des régions rurales – dont plusieurs étaient majoritairement acadiennes – et le parachève- ment du réseau scolaire de langue française 1 étaient autant d’indices que des lendemains meilleurs attendaient « l’Acadie ». Et pourtant, malgré ces évolutions ostensiblement positives, et en dépit des attentes qu’elles ont engendrées – ou à cause d’elles –, le Nouveau- Brunswick francophone a connu son « moment 1968 », moment de contestation dont l’ampleur se compare, toutes proportions gardées, aux crises soixante-huitardes qui ont alors secoué le Québec et le Canada « anglais ». Mais quels liens peut-on établir entre les actions de quelques centaines d’étudiants qui militent à Moncton en faveur des droits lin- guistiques et culturels pour les francophones, d’une part, et les luttes de la nouvelle gauche nord-américaine et des soixante-huitards français, de 1. Towards socially just pedagogies: Deleuzoguattarian critical disability studies Dan Goodley Reader in Disability Studies and co-director Centre of Applied Disability Studies, School of Education, University of Sheffield, 388 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2TA http://www.shef.ac.uk/applieddisabilitystudies/ Revised paper submitted for Special Number of International Journal of Inclusive Education entitled: ‘Pedagogies: Matters of Social Justice and Inclusion’ 1 ABSTRACT Socially just pedagogies call for sensitivity to politics and culture. In this paper I will uncover some key challenges in relation to working pedagogically with disabled people through the exploration of a critical disability studies perspective. Firstly, I will unpack some of the assumptions that underpin educational understandings of 'disability' and 'impairment', suggesting that we need to engage more willingly with politicised and socially constructed ideas in relation to these phenomena. Secondly, I will raise questions about the current aims of pedagogy in relation to the market and the autonomous learner. In light of the market – and the subject it produces - I will argue that 'disability and 'impairment’ demand critical researchers to think more creatively about setting the conditions for experimenting with socially just pedagogies. Thirdly, with this experimentation in mind, I will draw upon the work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to think of socially just pedagogies in terms of rhizomes (n-1); productive models of desire and planes of immanence. These concepts construct pedagogies as 'becoming' rather than 'being' – opening up resistant spaces and potential territories of social justice – all of them uncertain. 2 Introduction: a multiplicity of challenges Educators … should reject forms of schooling that marginalize students who are poor, black and least advantaged. -

The pre- sentation of transgender people, especially the transgender protagonist in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, has been criticized as a formulaic depiction with little portrayal of their struggles and triumphs. At the same time, the transgender protagonist is viewed positively as an integral force in the novel. The poem “After Before and After” has been praised for its creative portrayal of transgender people. A study of transgen- der issues in relation to desire and connection helps to show that both texts offer more possibilities of liberation towards the state of “becoming.” This study applies Gilles De- leuze and Félix Guattari’s theory of schizoanalysis to explore transgender people’s lines of flight, rhizomatic movements and transversal connections towards the state of de- territorialization in India and the US. Ils se trouvent désormais confrontés au contexte d’une nouvelle réalité qui est la mondialisation. Depuis les dernières décennies, les changements occasionnés par la mondialisation se répercutent dans la conception même que l’on se fait du parler acadien et des pratiques culturelles acadiennes. Le chiac par exemple, auparavant stigmatisé et dévalorisé, devient maintenant porteur de valeurs identitaires modernes rattachées au mélange des cultures et à l’ouverture à l’autre. Toutefois, les contours de l’identité acadienne demeurent flous et sujets aux débats épistémologiques. La situation particulière d’un groupe qui n’a plus de territoire officiellement reconnu a une forte incidence sur les critères d’appartenance que les acteurs peuvent mobiliser pour se définir. Comment expliquer les processus d’identifications et les stratégies identitaires qui définissent l’appartenance au groupe chez les Acadiens? Partagent-ils les mêmes processus identitaires présents dans la littérature sur le sujet? Une connaissance plus approfondie des processus généraux peut-elle aider à mieux saisir et expliquer la complexité d’un groupe sensiblement diasporique dont l’identité et ses contours sont incertains? L’anthropologie en milieu acadien est presque inexistante.
