Dear HMADS Parents: In a few short months your child will be starting a new school year. It is imperative to continue with your child’s education during the summer months in preparation for the next year. Over the summer months please spend a few minutes a day reviewing the basics so that they retain what they have learned. From our experience, young children learn fast, but forget quickly if you do not review. Active learning is a con- tinuous process. Good children’s literature should always be an integral part of every child’s life. It is our goal to inspire children to love books and to become life- long readers. Please read with your child every day over the summer months. I will provide a recommended book list for your child, and please visit the library whenever possible. Allow your child to describe the illustrations, read familiar words, or create his or her own interpretation of the text. This form of reading aloud not only involves children in reading for enjoyment, but demonstrates reading for purpose, increases vocabulary, promotes oral language development, and develops knowledge of written language syntax. Just read, read, read, and have fun. Enjoy the summer and we look forward to starting a new school year in September.

Miss. Diana’s Kindergarten News It wasn’t too long ago when the classrooms were filled with the sounds of teacher voices, and children laughing, while being engaged in the process of learning. It is amazing how the time just flies when we are all having fun time learning. Our last few months in Kindergarten have been extremely eventful.

During science class, we had ten little caterpillars, which we observed, and analyzed their transformational process into beautiful butterflies. After discussing the life cycle of a butterfly, we released our little friends into their natural environment. We also learned how to tell time, recognize differ- ent types of coins, and learned about measurement in math class. We also talked about the two most important people in our lives, our own mothers and fathers, and all the special things that they do for each one of us. We are truly thankful and appreciative of our individual families. Towards the end of May, we also supported each other with great sportsmanship during Field Day. We enjoyed all the sporting events and the delicious food that was provided for us. Finally, during the week of our graduation, we took an unexpected imaginary trip to the Caribbean. We had tremendous fun while fishing for letters, reading great literature on our beach towels, and learning about summer safety. It was a great way to relax before our big performance at our Kindergarten Graduation! It has been a wonderful adventure throughout the year. We have all learned so many new and fascinating topics across all the subjects. I wish all of our families a fantastic, safe, and healthy summer! See you in September!

Miss. Elaine’s First Grade News Since March First Graders have learned about Force and Motion, Magnets, and Sound in Science. We have been completing activities in the class- room to enhance our knowledge of these topics and also to have fun! We have read realistic fiction, mysteries, non-fiction, fantasy, folktales, poetry, and biographies. The students learned about reading maps and globes in Social Studies. We have been writing creatively and shared our writing with the rest of the school at the May Morning Assembly. As the students prepare for second grade, they want to share their hopes for coming year! I wish everyone a happy and healthy summer and keep reading and writing!!! Haig: My favorite part of first grade was doing a lot of new experiments like making the maracas for Cinco de Mayo. Lusine: My favorite part of this school year was when we met Armen. Carolina: I liked doing fun things in first grade, like learning Insights (reading comprehension) and Science. Armen: I liked our field trip to the farm. My favorite part was picking the pumpkins and painting them to make them look like spiders. Anais: I liked to learn interesting things in science, especially when we played with magnets.

Mrs. Mayda’s Second Grade News I congratulate my second graders in completing academic year of 2011-2012. During our spring semester, the students studied measurement, attributes of geometric shapes, multiplication and problem solving strategies in math. In science, they classified solids, liquids, gases and explored activities in sound, heat and light energy. We also learned about changes on Earth, , planets and constellations. In Social Studies, we studied the three parts of our government, facts about the fifty states and their location on the map.
