Inside Speeding, Manslaughter, Stealing Cars
ourna The Society of Automotive Historians, Inc. Issue 212 September-October 2004 The Motor Bandits: 5 Cars, Crimes and Philosophy by Michael Bromley www.autohistory.org \aiming a first is a dangerous business, especially with automobiles. You never reall y know. So get out your pen and co rrect me on this one: the first time an C automobile was used for non-automotive crime was in ew York City in 1910. Inside Speeding, manslaughter, stealing cars ... these thrills were earlier perfected. lt wasn't until 1910 that professional criminals and gangs took to the automobile. My coll ection of Editorial Comment 2 New York Tim es articles gives the first as eptember 29, 1910 with "Fight Pistol Battle in Speeding Autos." These were not chauffeurs of rival steel magnates. Okay, before the ded icated refuters out there find some 1903 Kalamazoo bank heist with a getaway in a President's Perspective 3 curved dash Olds (ca lling Keith Marvin! calling Keith Marvin!), allow me a few thoughts on why 1910 marks the meeting of automobiles and professional crime. Anything before was isolated, and not ge nerally happening, for the si mple reason SAH News 4 that before 1910 thugs in cars would have been conspicuous. The food was fantastic, as would be expected. It makes me want to cry when I see the immaculate shop in which Marvin does his work. As always, Marvin, Carolyn, and their son Marty had their cars on display. You would have thought you were on the concourse at Hilton Head, waiting for the judges! After the food and festivities were concluded, we were invited across the street to Marvin and Carolyn’s neighbor to admire his European collection. What a selection….everything from a British MGB to the top of the line Italian “Lambo”. What’s not to like? As I receive more information on the SASCO issue, I will pass it along. Everyone remember to watch The Hillholder calendar of events for upcoming car shows and tours. Sometimes they are doubled up on Saturdays. Be sure to pick one and by all means drive your Studebaker. Keep them rolling so people will notice. -
The Automobile Industry; the Coming of Age Of
I r I I ( III the coming ofage of capitalism's favorite child KenneoY The Coming ofAge ofCapitalism's Favorite Child THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY O. ^=^2j. l\enneJii 7 HE fabulous story of the automobile industry from the horseless carriage days of 1900 to the streamlined model of 1940 is told in this comprehensive survey of capitalism's favorite child and our best example of large- scale industrial enterprise. The scene opens with the electric auto, which was more popular than the gasoline buggy, and then shifts to the Middle West with the formation of the pioneer com- panies of Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac, Packard, Hudson, Overland and Ford. Growing pains were soon manifest in the beginnings of mergers and in the mortality rate which, despite fantastic profits, had by 1915 eliminated six out of every seven companies founded up to then. Four chapters are given to the World War period, from which the industry emerged as a towering young giant. Control of General Motors passed from William C. Durant to the Du Fonts and it was on its way to becoming the biggest profit producer in all history. Ford bought out his minority stockholders and became king of all he surveyed. America turned its back on Europe and rolled through the dizzy twenties, led by the automobile. For the first time the problem of producing cars be- came secondary to the problem of selling them, and the auto maker was faced with time-payments, trade-ins, used cars and development of export business. Ford's famous Model T disappeared and the picture changed rapidly with the rise of Chrysler. -

During the 1920s and 30s Studebaker produced high-end cars such as the President and the Champion that marked engineering firsts in the automobile world. During World War II, Studebaker produced a line of military vehicles for the United States Army. The management of Studebaker repeatedly had trouble with labor costs and quality control issues. In an attempt to stabilize their financial situation, Studebaker merged with Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit during the 1950s. Though the merger helped to diversify the selection of vehicles, including the creation of the very successful Lark and Avanti, it did not create the financial stability that the owners hoped. The competition from the “Big 3” automobile manufacturers proved too much competition for a small company like Studebaker. -

The Central Texas Museum of Automotive History was founded by Dick Burdick in 1980 as a 501(c)3 non-profit educational foundation and was dedicated to the collection, restoration and preservation of historic automobiles, accessories and related memorabilia. It is over 40,000 square feet, climate controlled building and rests on approximately five acres. The collection traces the development of the automobile and its effect on the social and economic climate of much of the world. It traces the evolution from the high wheelers and steam buggies of the turn of the century through the boxy utilitarian cars of the late teens and twenties, the classic era of the late 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, the dream machines and land yachts of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, as well as the transition of the highly efficient aerodynamic sport and passenger cars. It is a one-of-a-kind collection that began with the first vehicle Mr. Burdick purchased in 1970 and a destination for anyone with a love for collector vehicles and the automotive industry’s glory days. dankruseclassics.com | 866·495·8111 The Richard Burdick Collection.
