Name Signature Date iii ABSTRACT Complementary approach to filigree in Ghana was chosen by the researcher as a means to break monotony in the filigree integrative materials such as emerald, ruby and diamonds. These have been in play for too long, and the use of these in Ghana blends Ghana made filigree with others. The researcher in this respect introduces Ghanaian materials as attributes into filigree making in Ghana. This is to serve as a bridge between the Ghanaian and the art and also as another genre of filigree that would be associated with Ghana. -

The term “structuralism” was introduced into linguistics by Roman Jakobson in the early days of the Linguistic Circle of Prague, founded in 1926. The cluster of ideas defended by Jakobson and his colleagues can be specified but differ considerably from the concept of structuralism as it has come to be understood more recently. That took place because from the 1930s on it became customary to equate structuralism with the ideas of Ferdinand de Saussure, as expounded in his posthumous Cours de linguistique générale (1916). It can be shown, however, that Jakobson’s group rejected Saussure’s theory for ideological reasons. As the term “structuralism” became more widely used it came to be associated with posi- tivist approaches to linguistics rather than with the original phenomenological orientation that had characterized the Linguistic Circle of Prague. The purpose of this paper is to clarify these different approaches and to suggest that because of its extreme porosity the word “structuralism” is an example of a “terminological pandemic”. More research on the varied uses to which the key terms “structure” and “structuralism” were put will undoubtedly further elucidate this important episode in 20th-century intellectual history. 1. Introduction In this article, I shall examine the early history of linguistic structu- ralism and the role played in it by the Russian philologist and linguist Roman Jakobson (1896–1982). -

Copyright © The British Academy 1998 –all rights reserved EDMOND SOLLBERGER The British Museum Edmond Sollberger 1920–1989 1 EDMOND SOLLBERGER was born on 12 October 1920, in Istanbul, where his father was an accountant. He was Swiss by birth, his family origin being in Wynigen in the Canton of Berne, French speaking, and Roman Catholic by upbringing. He received his early education in Istanbul, in the Colle`ge religieux franc¸ais, a rather monastic establishment run by friars, concerning which he had some very mixed memories, and strange stories. His early years in Istanbul set him on a career in which his command of languages played an important part, a working knowledge of Turkish and modern Greek being a useful legacy of this time, to which he was able later to add a practical knowledge of Arabic. He completed his schooling in Istanbul in 1939, and received his further education at the University of Geneva, first in the faculty of Sciences e´conom- iques et sociales from 1940 to 1941, but mainly in the faculty of Lettres from 1941 to 1945, where he studied general linguistics together with English and Spanish. During this period he had the curious experience in vacation time of passing by train between Geneva and Istanbul through Nazi occupied territory. At Geneva he benefited from training in general linguistics under Henri Frei in the department established by Ferdinand de Saussure. De Saussure had died in 1913, and his first two successors in the Chair, his former pupils Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye, who together had edited and published notes of his lectures as the influential Cours de linguistic ge´ne´rale (1916), were themselves succeeded by their pupil Frei. -

2. Structuralism As a Linguistic Theory

Unit one: Modern linguistics (European structuralism) Lesson 02: Structuralism- A linguistics Theory 1. Emergence of European Structural linguistics (GENEVA SCHOOL) STRUCTURAL LINGUISTICS IS an approach to LINGUISTICS which treats language as an interwoven structure, in which every item acquires identity and validity only in relation to the other items in the system. All linguistics in the 20th century is structural in this sense, as opposed to much work in the 19th century, when it was common to trace the history of individual words. Structuralism attempted to lay down a rigorous methodology for the analysis of any language. In Europe, Saussure influenced: (1) the Geneva School of Albert Sechehaye and Charles Bally, (2) the Prague School of Roman Jakobson and Nikolai Trubetzkoy, whose work would prove hugely influential, particularly concerning phonology, (3) the Copenhagen School of Louis Hjelmslev, and (4) the Paris School of Algirdas Julien Greimas. Structural linguistics also had an influence on other disciplines in Europe, including anthropology, psychoanalysis and Marxism, bringing about the movement known as structuralism 2.
