Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 2 Annual Report 2016/2017 President’s Report Our season of 2016/2017 was a season that produced improved performances for many and consolidation both on the field and off, laying a strong foundation for us to move forward with confidence for success. The Club has turned around a large financial deficit by implementing effective and efficient governance practices, assisted by a proactive Board, rolling up their sleeves to ensure our Club remains sustainable into the future. However, the cost of managing a Premier Cricket Club to an expected elite Club level continues to escalate. The ongoing challenge for all Premier clubs is to be able to provide adequately for individual expectations in areas of opportunity and development translating to consistent performances. Welcome to our new directors who have now served their first 12 months with the Board. To Cliff Wright, Brendan Lavery and David McClean – thank you for jumping straight in with passion to make a positive contribution. It has also been excellent to further build the club’s connections with the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association. Executive members from the MPCA in Stephen Morone and Craig Letch have accepted our invitation to participate with our board, which has certainly enhanced the positive flow of communication. With all but one team challenging for finals and a 2nd XI Grand Final appearance, the playing group is continually improving and maturing into what is expected to challenge the competition Club Championship and finals in all grades consistently. I acknowledge the performance of the 2nd XI led by Sam Wiese, who achieved a Grand Final berth deservedly after being the most consistent team across the season, with many players having a break out season. However, to be denied a Premiership was heartbreaking for all involved. The retirement from Premier Cricket of Luke Walker leaves a big gap for us. His Premier Cricket career is an outstanding one. He leaves us with our thanks for his service and his considerable loyalty to FPCC. Also retiring from Premier cricket, after very serviceable careers, well done to Chris McCormick and Sam Wiese. On behalf of FPCC I thank them for their long-term service, both as talented cricketers and importantly passionate Clubmen. Our Club had strong representation at all levels of elite cricket, from International, State, BBL, underage State and Pathway. Congratulations to all for being great ambassadors for FPCC at all these levels. Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 3 Annual Report 2016/2017 The major project of upgrading our practice wicket precinct is finally underway, following an uncontrollable 18-month delay from Frankston City Council. Once completed, the upgrade maintains our facility as the benchmark of the Premier Competition. The demand from our region for increased access of our training facilities continues to grow and as has been the case for decades, we have always endeavoured to facilitate where practical, access in a coordinated manner. Cricket Victoria recently acknowledged the Club for its Community Engagement, suggesting we do it better than most Premier Clubs. I extend our appreciation to Head Coach Adrian Johnstone for his dedicated commitment over the past two seasons and wish him well for his future coaching endeavours. The sponsors who continue to be loyal and support our Club are a most valuable resource. In recent years they have had little business return for their investment. We all need to acknowledge, appreciate and support their businesses in return for their support of us, this has to be a priority going forward. Once again, I highlight our appreciation to our primary partner Buildsafe Building Insurances, as well as our premier partners Frankston RSL and Dunsford Financial. The Club is growing the fifth team being our volunteers. From Board members to casual involvement, thank you for those who have “put your hands up” to assist and minimise the workload for the few. I emphasise that to continue to be a sustainable club we need to build on our core base of current volunteers and I encourage family and friends to get involved for even greater satisfaction, understanding and enjoyment of our club. To be an effective club in the future we need to grow our cash reserves through increased sponsorship, total engagement and support from a better cross section of participants, growing a better connect with on field and off field therefore developing a greater inclusiveness and passion that can enhance our Club environment. Dennis Prendergast President Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 4 Annual Report 2016/2017 General Manager’s Report It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2016/2017. The process of compiling the Annual Report (my seventh report) provides a great opportunity to assemble a record of the achievements and records of the club from the recent season. Personally, I have completed my sixth year in this role. The shared arrangement has worked well, with my wife Jo undertaking a lot of the day-to-day administrative tasks and myself completing the practical onsite aspects of the position. I must commend the valuable contribution from our President, Dennis Prendergast. He puts so much time into our club, managing many key relationships with our important stakeholders. We look forward to the upcoming construction of our new training facility, which has been delayed for 18 months due to a number of factors out of our control. The facility will be innovative in the fact there will be a capacity to have run-ups at both ends of the practice wickets. This will in effect double the use of the practice wickets, which currently struggle to meet the training needs of the club, pathway squads and other cricket groups who are invited to use the only turf training facility in the region. By being fully enclosed with roof netting, it will also provide a much needed safety measure that will remove the risk of parking in the nearby car park or playing in the nearby playground. The final plans have been completed, with the Tender process about to commence, with construction scheduled at this stage to be completed by September 2017. Administration As in previous years, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s and Cricket Australia’s support is greatly appreciated. Coaching Adrian Johnstone continued in his role as Director of Coaching. Adrian was supported by a quality group of coaches including Johan Vorster, Anthony McQuire, Darren Berry, Tim Spear, Darren Groves, David McClean, Mark O’Sullivan and Dean Gunawardana. Following a comprehensive end of season review, Adrian was not offered a new role at the club. We sincerely thank Adrian for his passion and dedication that he brought to the club in his two year period as senior coach. Following an extensive process involving multiple highly credentialed candidates, the club is excited to have secured the services of Keith Jansz as the new Director of Coaching, considering his extensive experience and skill set. Keith comes to the club with a Level 3 National Coaching Accreditation and is currently the coach of Victorian Country Women’s Cricket Team and the Victorian Indigenous Women’s Cricket Team. With significant familiarity of the club & region already, Keith returns to FPCC after earlier guiding the club to its maiden 1st XI Grand Final appearance in 2002/03. Jansz has recently managed high performance roles in major colleges in Sri Lanka, following roles as coach of Melbourne Cricket Club (Women’s Division), Springvale South in the DDCA and Hawthorn – Monash University in 2011/12 to 2012/13. Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 5 Annual Report 2016/2017 A 1st XI cricketer with Prahran between 1980/81 to 1986/87, Jansz also has held other significant high performance roles to boost his experience and skill set, including a State selector and Specialist Coach of Vic Spirit, Coach of Victorian Women U17’s and U19’s, Chairman of Selectors for Victorian Women U15’s & U17’s and State Selector of Victorian Men’s U19’s. We look forward to working closely with Keith once again.
