Mishin Polar research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (PINRO), 183763 Murmansk, Russia ABSTRACT Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are distributed along the entire northern Murman coast in Russia. Breeding sites are located mainly on the Ainov and Seven islands, which belong to the Kandalaksha Nature Reserve. The annual pup production was estimated to be around 800 pups in the early 1990s, and the pup mortality has been observed to be relatively high. The population was estimated to be approxi- mately 3,500 individuals in 1994. Grey seals migrate in small numbers into the White Sea during sum- mer. The grey seal is protected and registered in the Red Books of Russia, Murmansk region and Fen- noscandia. The main results of grey seals investigations from 1986 to 2000 are briefly reviewed. The regional focus area includes Finnmark County and Murmansk Oblast. The introductory chapter explains the purpose of the study and the way the work has been done. The next two chapters provide a detailed account of the region and its basic characteristics. The general finding is that the region strongly needs a new stimulus to growth, but that it is badly prepared for receiving a coming oil and gas boom. The following chapter gives a brief overview of the oil and gas sectors in Norway and Russia and introduces the baseline scenario, which indicates the expected scale and scope of future petroleum activity in the Barents Sea. After this three scenarios are presented. They all have 2030 as their time horizon. -

ARCTIC VOL. 48, NO. 3 (SEPTEMBER 1995) P. 257–266 The Murman Coast and the Northern Dvina Delta as English and Dutch Commercial Destinations in the 16th and 17th Centuries J.W. VELUWENKAMP1 (Received 26 August 1993; accepted in revised form 30 September 1994) ABSTRACT. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Murman coast trade and the Northern Dvina trade were two clearly distinct branches of Western European commerce. The Murman coast trade involved the commerce with the regional economy of the Kola Peninsula, and the Northern Dvina trade coincided with the transit trade with the Russian interior. In the 1550s, the English established commercial relations with interior Russia via the mouth of the Northern Dvina, mainly exchanging woollen cloth and metals for north and central Russian forestry and agriculture products. In the 1570s, the Dutch followed suit, and by the second decade of the seventeenth century, they had squeezed the English almost completely out of the Russian market. The Northern Dvina trade became a major line of Dutch business, involving the transit trade with interior Russia, the exchange of the products of the north and central Russian forestry and agriculture for gold and silver money and a wide range of military stores and luxury goods. In the 1560s, the Dutch developed commercial relations with the Murman coast, exchanging locally produced exports like cod, salmon, furs and train oil for locally used imports like woollen cloth, tinware, salt, pepper, and wine. In addition, from the early 1570s, the Dutch used Kola as an alternative to the Northern Dvina mouth as a port for the transit trade with interior Russia; but they did so only until about 1585, when the tsar directed all foreign trade of interior Russia to proceed via the newly founded port of Archangel on the Northern Dvina. -

Status per January 2007 The authors, Alexei Bambulyak and Bjørn Frantzen, have been working for more than 10 years on environmental cooperation in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region with special emphasis on Russia. Frantzen lead the Norwegian Polar Institute in Svalbard, and Bambulyak was a project manager at the Karelian Information Barents Centre. From 1997 to 2005, both worked at Svanhovd Environmental Centre, they lead the Barents Council Environmental Management Program for the Murmansk Region (EMP-Murmansk), and facilitated environmental capacity building projects in Northwest Russia. Today, Alexei Bambulyak has his daily work at Akvaplan-niva as General Manager Russia, and Bjørn Frantzen works as Project Manager at Bioforsk – Soil and Environment, Svanhovd. Both are responsible for arranging cooperation between their companies and Russian environmental institutes under the Barents and bilateral Norwegian-Russian agreements. Authors and their companies have for many years closely collaborated with the Norwegian Barents Secretariat and been focused on the environmental aspect related to development of oil-and-gas industry in the Arctic regions. Frantzen and Bambulyak have personally visited many of the sites described in this report, had meetings with environmental authorities, petroleum and transport companies working in the region. The present work also describes their experience undertaken in this sphere. 27 Arctic Norway in the Russian fin-de-siècle imagination: Evgeni Lvov-Kochetov’s travelogue Out in the Arctic Sea (1895) Tintti Klapuri* RÉSUMÉ Dans cet article, j’analyse la perception de la Norvège arctique dans l’imaginaire russe au tournant du siècle dans un cas exemplaire, le récit de voyage Po Studenomu moriu. Poezdka na sever (Autour de la mer glaciale. Voyage dans le Nord, 1895) publié par l’écrivain-journaliste Evgeni Lvov-Kotchetov. Le livre relate l’expédition dans la Russie et la Norvège septentrionales dirigée par le ministre des Finances Serge Witte. Il montre à quel point l’entourage de Witte perçoit la Norvège arctique et le Finnmark en particulier comme une partie intégrale de l’Europe en termes culturels et sociétaux. Pour eux, il s’agit un trait distinctif par rapport à la région de Murman que le récit de voyage représente telle l’arrière-cour de la Russie impériale. Dans la narration, la Norvège arctique est perçue la plupart du temps comme un modèle positif à suivre dans la modernisation du nord de la Russie, bien que certains aspects comme le tourisme de masse soient aussi considérés avec scepticisme. ABSTRACT In this article, I discuss the ways in which Arctic Norway was perceived in the Russian imagination at the turn of the twentieth century in light of one representative example, the travelogue Po Studenomu moriu.
